Climate Policy And Partisan Wars: Elon Musk And Twitter

May 14, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Is Elon Musk a climate hero that the climate movement and its allies should embrace, or does his libertarian (or conservative) politics turn him into an object of scorn? Musk poses a deeper question that the movement must confront: should climate politics get subsumed under the broader liberal-versus-conservative conflict, or should it be guided by bipartisanship? There is no easy answer because there is a political logic to both partisanship and bipartisanship. Many climate activists are frustrated (and rightly so) with the slow pace of progress on climate issues and blame it on Republicans or conservative Democrats. They believe that the “other” side does not act in good faith and cannot be trusted in making political compromises. Furthermore, the movement’s internal dynamic favors partisanship. Social media, which shapes the political discourse of young climate activists, views bipartisanship as selling out. Indeed, … [Read more...] about Climate Policy And Partisan Wars: Elon Musk And Twitter

‘My tweets get more replies than Modi ji’s’: Ola CEO says he is subject to biggest troll attacks

May 4, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a photo from 2016 (Image: bhash/Twitter) Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has refuted reports that claim there is a coordinated network of Twitter accounts that exist only to praise of his company. On the contrary, says Aggarwal, Ola and he himself are subject to “one of the biggest troll attacks in corporate India”, with his tweets receiving more replies than even the prime minister of the country. The Ola founder and CEO was responding to a tweet from ‘The DeshBhakt’ – a prominent political commentary platform – which implied that Ola is behind a number of Twitter handles that “exist only to claim how great Ola Electric is.” ‘The DeshBhakt’ tweet itself came in response to a Mint investigative report which found that a “network of seemingly coordinated Twitter handles appears to be working to drown out criticism of Ola Electric on social media.” “On the contrary,” said Bhavish Aggarwal , “Ola Electric and I are … [Read more...] about ‘My tweets get more replies than Modi ji’s’: Ola CEO says he is subject to biggest troll attacks

Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others

May 15, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) TikTok posts about actor Johnny Depp's defamation trial against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, have turned a stay-at-home mom based in Scotland into an accidental influencer. Or, perhaps more aptly, a DeppTok influencer. Sophie Doggett, whose TikTok was previously populated by videos on everyday things such as herself or her pets, posted to her TikTok account on April 25 a clip of Heard's lawyer asking a question of a witness and then immediately objecting to the response. It is one of many moments in the trial that has been seized upon by people like Doggett, as clips of testimony and references to the case have pervaded TikTok in a way that no trial has before. That's partly because the proceeding, set to resume Monday, is being livestreamed during the age of TikTok, and also because of the high-profile celebrities the case involves. Doggett, who paired the clip to playful music, said she gained 30,000 followers seemingly overnight from the post which has, to date, … [Read more...] about Dissection by TikTok: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard trial posts are making accidental influencers out of some, targets out of others

Why you need to take right-wing comedy seriously

May 10, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

It was one of the more spectacular TV flops of the 21st century. Late in the second term of President George W. Bush, in 2007, Fox News decided that it had the right-wing alternative to Comedy Central’s popular and influential The Daily Show with Jon Stewart . The 1/2 Hour News Hour would puncture liberal pieties and media bias in the fashion that Stewart and his cast of fake correspondents fired barbs at conservatives and right-wing media like Fox News. The show tanked—hard—more or less after the pilot aired in February 2007. And with its failure, modern progressives (and future leftists) had all the evidence they needed: Conservatives weren’t funny. advertisement advertisement For the last 15 years, that take—frequently informed by one failed late-night show—has stuck among anyone who isn’t a conservative. But all the while, right wingers were making comedy—and succeeding. Some of it flew under the radar in subterranean clubs and YouTube channels, … [Read more...] about Why you need to take right-wing comedy seriously
