Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FINTECH SNARK TANK A few years ago, I wrote something about how large banks were doing interesting things about learning more about their customers. It prompted a response from a credit union CEO who told me, “Big banks don’t know—and will never know—their customers as well as credit unions know their members.” My response: “Dude, you don’t know Jack.” I quickly added, “...or Jim or Jenny or Jill or any of your other members whose names begin with the other 25 letters of the alphabet. You know your members’ names, the names of their children, where they go to school, etc. That’s all well and fine—but you don’t really know their financial lives because you have a very limited view.” And that was a few years ago. Since then, Americans’ financial lives have become more complex. The proliferation of fintech providers has expanded the number of providers that consumers have accounts with, … [Read more...] about Americans’ Shadow Financial Lives: Why Banks Don’t Know Jack (Or Jill)

Skyroot’s rocket launch will demonstrate young people can dream big, says ISRO Chairman
In light of the upcoming launch of Skyroot Aerospace's Vikram-S rocket on November 18, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath praised the Indian space industry for creating a facilitating ecosystem. The launch of India's first privately manufactured rocket on November 18 will demonstrate that young people with a dream to build something big can do so in India, he said. The ISRO chief made the remarks at the Bengaluru Tech Summit, mentioning the upcoming Mission Prarambh rocket launch by Skyroot Aerospace from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. Vikram-S is a sub-orbital mission — a trajectory that does not complete a complete Earth orbit. “We have created an ecosystem today for them (young people) to make their dreams happen, build rocket systems using the available industries in India and take the support of the Indian Space Research Organisation infrastructure that we have created today to make that launch happen,” he said. Representative image In a relief for Flipkart, the company received an interim stay from the Karnataka High Court in a demand exceeding Rs 1,100 crore from the Commissioner of Income Tax - Appeals (CIT(A)) on January 31. The demand pertains to the assessment years 2016-17 and 2018-19, and Flipkart had been directed to deposit the same within four days. The company had filed writ petitions against the demand notices issued by the CIT(A), after upholding addition on account of capitalising discount as marketing intangibles and disallowing ESOP cross charges amounting to about Rs 4,500 crore and Rs 180 crore respectively for the two assessment years. Flipkart contended that the issue of capitalisation of marketing intangibles was decided in its favour by Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) for 2015-16, and the allowability of ESOP cross charges is covered by rulings in the Madras and Delhi High Courts. The e-commerce major’s primary grievance was that reasonable time was … [Read more...] about Flipkart gets interim stay from Karnataka HC in Rs 1,100 crore tax demand case

(Representative image) Four of India's largest real-money gaming startups - Dream Sports, Mobile Premier League (MPL), Games24x7 and Zupee - have written a letter to Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), expressing their disagreement with the recent statements of the industry association Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on the country's draft gaming rules, people familiar with the matter told Moneycontrol. These companies are part of the IAMAI's Gaming Committee. However, they allege in the letter that the industry body's recent statement on the country's draft gaming rules were "made without consulting us or providing us any information and we have raised a strong objection with IAMAI regarding the same". The Wombat Pine Professional Keyboard Is A Full-Size Mechanical Model With Great Typing Action
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Mechanical computer keyboards have boomed in popularity over the past couple of years, eating away at the market for the cheap and spongey membrane-style keyboards that are bundled with many desktop computers. Many of us working from home and using our laptops don’t enjoy typing long documents on most laptops' uncomfortable and short-travel keyboards. What started as a niche product used chiefly by gaming enthusiasts has become a preferred choice for many people, especially those working from home where the louder key sounds won’t bother colleagues in a busy office. The sound is produced by the physical switches used in mechanical keyboards. These switches create more tactile feedback and some keyboards can even have their switches swapped out for a different type that offers even more of a click or … [Read more...] about The Wombat Pine Professional Keyboard Is A Full-Size Mechanical Model With Great Typing Action

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin OBSERVATIONS FROM THE FINTECH SNARK TANK This year’s steady stream of staff layoffs by technology companies began in the summer of 2022 when fintechs started cutting staff as valuations fell. In an article titled In Fintech, 2022 Is Becoming The Year Of The Layoffs , Jeff Kauflin wrote: “Rising interest rates, worries of an impending recession and an abrupt slowdown in venture investment has caused fintech founders to aggressively reduce expenses. Every corner of the fintech industry is feeling the squeeze.” In the early part of 2023, the layoff parade has continued and spread to BigTech and established fintech companies. PayPal, for example, announced it would reduce its workforce by about 7%, roughly 2,000 jobs.
