Thai police say they are supporting a new approach to drug abuse, following an anti-drug campaign event in Phuket yesterday. The deputy inspector general of Royal Thai Police said the campaign in Phuket’s town of Karon follows a nationwide shift in the country to get drug users treatment instead of jail time. Karon’s police chief said at the event that every police station in Thailand is to have a “sustainable community action project” to solve drug issues. Royal Thai Police Deputy Inspector Panurat Lakboon said that this year, programmes are being introduced in 1,483 communities across Thailand. Karon Police will focus on a particular area of the town for its community anti-drug campaign. Officers will visit every household in Baan Khok Chang to prepare to draft a Memorandum of Understanding on drug testing, according to Karon Police Chief Theerawat Liamsuwan. Theerawat said… “If there are no addicts in the community, there will be no suppliers. This line in the Supreme Court abortion ruling signals gay marriage and contraception could be next
In another monumental 6-3 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday eliminated the federal right to an abortion, striking down the protection granted by the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 and now leaving rights and regulations to states. advertisement advertisement The consequences of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will be severe, and in some cases, immediate: Many states have “trigger bans,” allowing abortion prohibitions to go into law right away. Other states intended to put into place bans after the decision was published, which was all but certain following a leak of the draft in May. But the consequences of the broad decision could be even more far-reaching than women’s rights to abortions, namely placing in danger the legal rights to contraception, same-sex marriage, and even private sexual relationships. The basis of the decision, in the opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, was that the right to abortion … [Read more...] about This line in the Supreme Court abortion ruling signals gay marriage and contraception could be next
Biden signs bipartisan gun safety bill into law, takes swipe at Supreme Court
- A + A WASHINGTON (June 25): US President Joe Biden on Saturday (June 25) signed a bipartisan gun safety bill into law, the first major federal gun reform in three decades, days after the Supreme Court expanded gun rights. "This is a monumental day," Biden said at the White House, with his wife Jill by his side. "God willing, it's going to save a lot of lives." The Supreme Court on Thursday declared for the first time that the US Constitution protects an individual's right to carry a handgun in public for self-defence. Gun control has long been a divisive issue in the nation with several attempts to put new controls on gun sales failing time after time. The new legislation includes provisions to help states keep guns out of the hands of those deemed to be a danger to themselves or others and blocks gun sales to those convicted of abusing unmarried intimate partners. It does not ban sales of assault-style rifles or high-capacity magazines. The law does take some … [Read more...] about Biden signs bipartisan gun safety bill into law, takes swipe at Supreme Court
Palace sees ‘politicization’ in ICC prober’s push vs Duterte
Martin Andanar Malacañang on Saturday said the “politicization that has infiltrated” the International Criminal Court (ICC) would be exposed if it allowed its Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan to resume the investigation of President Duterte’s bloody war on drugs. Acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar said the Philippine government was “exasperated” over Khan’s application to the tribunal’s Pre-Trial Chamber for authority to resume the probe even though it was the first time that the ICC prosecutor has made the request. Khan requested the authority to resume investigation on Friday after he found “no indication” that the Philippine government had investigated or was investigating police and government leadership conduct in the bloody war on drugs as the administration had promised when it asked that the probe be deferred. Khan’s office suspended its inquiry in November last year. Andanar insisted that the Duterte administration had been transparent in addressing the … [Read more...] about Palace sees ‘politicization’ in ICC prober’s push vs Duterte
WHO Says Monkeypox Isn’t A Global Health Emergency Yet—But Raises ‘Serious Concerns’ About Spread
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The World Health Organization announced Saturday the spread of monkeypox does not yet constitute a public health emergency, but WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said "serious concerns about the scale and speed of the current outbreak" remain. Key Facts A WHO panel made the determination at an emergency meeting called to determine if the escalating spread of monkeypox qualifies as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), which would push countries to take action to limit the virus’ spread. The committee noted that most monkeypox cases during the recent uptick have been confined to communities of “gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men” who are not vaccinated against smallpox, but warned there is “a risk of further, sustained transmission into the wider population that should not be overlooked.” The committee’s decision was not unanimous, but its members … [Read more...] about WHO Says Monkeypox Isn’t A Global Health Emergency Yet—But Raises ‘Serious Concerns’ About Spread
Polish, Ukrainian activists march for LGBTQ rights
Revelers watch a performance in a nightclub during an LGBTQ event as the Kyiv Pride Parade was cancelled due to Russia’s military invasion launched on Ukraine, in Kyiv, on June 25, 2022. AFP WARSAW — Ukrainians were among tens of thousands of LGBTQ activists who took part in the Polish capital’s Pride parade Saturday, in a country hosting tens of thousands of Ukrainians who have fled the Russian invasion. The march however started with a minute of silence for two people killed in a shooting near a gay bar in Norway’s capital Oslo in the early hours of Saturday. Norwegian police have arrested a man suspected of “Islamist terrorism” over the shooting, which also wounded 21 and caused Oslo’s Pride to be called off. But Norway’s ambassador to Poland Anders Eide said love and justice would “prevail”. “Our fight for equal rights for all and our support for the LGBTQ+ community is unequivocal and it will remain so,” he told AFP at the start of the procession. Lenny Emson, … [Read more...] about Polish, Ukrainian activists march for LGBTQ rights
