How To Make A Gas Tax ‘Holiday’ Make Sense For The Long Term

June 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Yesterday, as widely expected, President Biden called on Congress to implement a three month suspension of the federal gasoline tax. Observers of all stripes have argued that the move is unlikely to offer consumers much relief, and could even be counterproductive. Economists have suggested that suspending the 18 cent per gallon tax could modestly stimulate gasoline demand at a time of constrained supply, providing a boost to consumption and padding oil company profits. Climate policy advocates worry about the carbon emissions impact of subsidizing consumption. And given the role of the gas tax in supporting the federal Highway Trust Fund, others are raising red flags about starving infrastructure investment of much needed revenue. Still, it’s understandable that policymakers feel compelled to take action as U.S. gasoline prices soar to record highs, threatening the broader economic recovery. It now seems quite … [Read more...] about How To Make A Gas Tax ‘Holiday’ Make Sense For The Long Term

‘Horrific’ sexual abuses uncovered in Australia mining probe

June 23, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A CANBERRA (June 23): A landmark inquiry into Australia's mining sector has uncovered dozens of shocking cases of sexual harassment and abuse of women workers at companies including BHP Group and Rio Tinto Group. The Western Australia government report released on Thursday described "horrific" incidents at the workplaces, which it labelled both a failure of the industry and an oversight by government. Among recommendations were the payment of compensation to the many workers who became victims of bosses and colleagues on remote projects. "I was shocked and appalled well beyond expectation by the size and depth of the problem," Libby Mettam, chair of the inquiry, said in the report. "To hear the lived reality of the taunts, attacks, and targeted violence, the devastation and despair the victims experienced, the threats to or loss of their livelihood that resulted was shattering and completely inexcusable." The probe delves into the dark corners of an industry … [Read more...] about ‘Horrific’ sexual abuses uncovered in Australia mining probe

US prosecutors seek jail term of 30 to 55 years for Ghislaine Maxwell

June 23, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK (June 23): Ghislaine Maxwell should be sentenced to between 30 and 55 years in prison after being convicted of helping the sex offender and globetrotting financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls, US prosecutors said on Wednesday. Maxwell, 60, was convicted in December by a federal jury on five charges, including sex trafficking, for recruiting and grooming four girls between 1994 and 2004 for sexual encounters with Epstein, then her boyfriend. In a sentencing memorandum filed in Manhattan federal court, prosecutors called Maxwell's conduct "shockingly predatory." "She was a calculating, sophisticated, and dangerous criminal who preyed on vulnerable young girls and groomed them for sexual abuse," they wrote. "Her practice of targeting vulnerable victims reflects her view that struggling young girls could be treated like disposable objects." Circuit Judge Alison Nathan, who presided over Maxwell's four-week trial before being … [Read more...] about US prosecutors seek jail term of 30 to 55 years for Ghislaine Maxwell

Is remote work here to stay? An inside look at how this shift could dramatically change cities

June 23, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

If companies allowed more of their employees to work from home permanently, businesses would gravitate toward city centers, while people would primarily live in the periphery, resulting in less traffic congestion and falling real estate prices downtown. advertisement advertisement Those are our main findings from a model we created to forecast pandemic-driven changes in Los Angeles. Many of these changes were beginning to happen back in the spring of 2020, when we began this research. We wanted to build a model that could show the effects of more widespread telecommuting over a long period of time post-pandemic. Our model is like an artificial world— think Sim City —in which virtual people choose where to live and where to work. Virtual companies provide jobs to workers, while virtual real estate developers provide offices, warehouses, and housing, setting prices that match supply with demand. Using pre-pandemic information about where people … [Read more...] about Is remote work here to stay? An inside look at how this shift could dramatically change cities

Don’t blame her: Kim Kardashian denies she damaged that Marilyn Monroe dress

June 23, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

Kim Kardashian has finally addressed accusations that she damaged Marilyn Monroe's famous "naked" dress when she wore the iconic gown to the Met Gala last month. The Kardashians star, who rendered textile conservators and fashion historians "speechless" upon donning the delicate 1962 gown, said Tuesday (June 21) on NBC News' Today that she did not damage the dress when she wore it for "minutes" for the red-carpet portion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala. Photos showing apparent wear and tear on the historic dress renewed the controversy last week, but Kardashian doubled down on her handling of the Some Like It Hot star's glittering garment and the care that owner Ripley's Believe It or Not! took in loaning it to her. The media-savvy mogul, who had been mum on the bubbling controversy, started off by saying she couldn't believe that people on social media didn't know who Monroe was. That is, apparently, until the reality star represented the … [Read more...] about Don’t blame her: Kim Kardashian denies she damaged that Marilyn Monroe dress

How to handle a coworker who’s acting out from a place of fear

June 22, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Fears are the root cause of many unhelpful behaviors at the office—and yes, at home too. Take for example, the boss who rewrites your powerpoint deck. The colleague who always seems to “forget” to CC you or invite you to important meetings. The direct report who has either gone non-communicative or just complains to HR about feeling overworked and disempowered in his role rather than talking to you about it. The board member who writes scathing emails, but is always your best friend on the phone. advertisement advertisement Learning to have the right conversations, conversations that allow us to see beyond disruptive or harmful behaviors and get to the underlying fears that motivate them, is a crucial skill that we all need to develop. The problem is, it’s really hard—especially when someone is stonewalling or throwing barbs at you. People who are acting out of fear rarely do so gracefully. Instead, they often exhibit fight, flight, or fear behaviors … [Read more...] about How to handle a coworker who’s acting out from a place of fear

Vapes, heated tobacco, ‘best bet to kick’ smoking problem — heart health expert

June 23, 2022 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

In photo – Dr. Rafael R. Castillo , a leading Filipino heart doctor. MANILA, Philippines — A leading Filipino heart doctor said alternative tobacco products such as vapes and heated tobacco products should be considered as part of smoking cessation intervention programs, and encouraging its regulated use in current smokers may be an effective solution to address the smoking epidemic that kills millions of people globally each year. In a recent satellite symposium during the annual convention of the Philippine Heart Association, Dr. Rafael R. Castillo, the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to be elected as a trustee of the United Kingdom-based International Society of Hypertension (ISH), said smokers need a viable alternative that can wean them off from cigarette smoking, and help them quit. He said quitting smoking is still the primary goal. But for recalcitrant smokers or those who can’t quit despite smoking cessation interventions, “the use of electronic nicotine delivery … [Read more...] about Vapes, heated tobacco, ‘best bet to kick’ smoking problem — heart health expert
