Your people-pleasing ways are holding you back. Here’s how to set healthy boundaries
As a leadership coach and consultant, I frequently hear people in business saying things like: “He wants to be liked too much to be a good leader.” This comes from the perception that wanting to be liked gets in the way of making tough decisions or avoiding uncomfortable conversations. And it is true that leaders need to make decisions in service of the whole system they lead, not just for the individuals within them, which means that almost inevitably leaders will sometimes be unpopular, disliked even. So how can we build our tolerance for being disliked, so that we don’t get knocked off course by the opinions of others? We’ll start by looking at the impact of fear itself on our performance and then move on to what we can do to overcome this all too human response. What happens when we fear being disliked? Full disclosure: I have spent a lot of my life wanting to be liked. As an extrovert, I have what psychologists sometimes refer to as an external reference point. I … [Read more...] about Your people-pleasing ways are holding you back. Here’s how to set healthy boundaries
Still A Smash: ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 Premiere Sets AppleTV+ Viewership Record
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It had been more than a year since a new episode of Ted Lasso aired on AppleTV+, but it seems that absence truly made the heart grow fonder for viewers. The season 3 premiere of the popular comedy set a new series high for its debut and also drew more viewers for an episode of a show on the platform in more than a year, according to numbers provided by Samba TV, which measures TV engagement. Some 870,000 U.S. households viewed Ted Lasso ’s premiere episode during the live-plus-four-day window, which measures viewership on the debut date and the four days afterward. That was up 60% from season two’s season premiere, which drew 546,000 viewers in summer 2021. And it was way up from the series premiere, which came during the first year of the pandemic. Samba notes that Lasso ’s premiere overindexed among millennial households, including adults 25-34, compared to the national average. “Audiences clearly … [Read more...] about Still A Smash: ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 Premiere Sets AppleTV+ Viewership Record
Setting AFP fixed terms: The pros, cons of ending ‘revolving door’ policy
INQUIRER FILE PHOTOS MANILA, Philippines—A law signed last year to end the “revolving door policy” in which military chiefs serve for only a few months or a year, has become the reason for “rumblings” in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). This was revealed by Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez on Friday (Jan. 20) as he stressed that the rumblings were just expressions of tampo by military men who are “anxious” over the possible implications of Republic Act (RA) No. 11709 on their careers. RELATED STORY: Makabayan solon: ‘Sad, if true’ coup rumor stemmed from new AFP ranking system Signed on April 13, 2022 by then President Rodrigo Duterte, the law had set a fixed three-year tour of duty for these key AFP officials: chief of staff, vice chief of staff, commanding generals (Army, Air Force, Navy), unified command commanders, and inspector general. Panfilo Lacson, RA No. 11709 will end disservice to the military because instead of staying … [Read more...] about Setting AFP fixed terms: The pros, cons of ending ‘revolving door’ policy
Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead
Goal setting is one of those things that seems like it would be fundamental to success. If you’ve read any books or articles about getting ahead in your career or life, you’ve probably come across tips on setting goals (like SMART goal setting) so that you can successfully meet them. But setting goals may not be as relevant anymore, and there may be better alternatives to managing your career–and your life. Part of the reason goal setting may be becoming irrelevant is because of the speed of change and the volatility of the world. When everything is moving so fast and changing, the goals you set for yourself can become redundant. That said, it’s very powerful to imagine yourself succeeding in the future and focus on your preferred version of tomorrow. The key is to seek to be directionally accurate , knowing that things are constantly changing in a way you can’t always predict. Here are five effective ways to take charge of your career when you’re operating in … [Read more...] about Forget about goal setting. Try these 5 strategies instead
Inflation shock puts Bank of England on course to raise rates again
Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, attends the Bank of England Monetary Policy Report Press Conference, at the Bank of England, London, Britain, Feb 2, 2023. Yui Mok/Pool via REUTERS/File photo LONDON -The Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates for the 11th time in a row on Thursday after a surprise jump in inflation dashed speculation that it might have been about to take a pause. The BoE is trying to reconcile Britain’s weak economic outlook and recent worries about global banks with stubbornly high price growth, and is due to announce its latest decision on rates at 1200 GMT. Most economists had believed inflation was on course to fall steadily, after hitting a 41-year high above 11 percent in October. But Wednesday’s data showed inflation rose to 10.4 percent in February rather than continuing its descent and immediately turned Thursday’s announcement into an almost one-way bet on a quarter percentage-point increase in Bank Rate. UK inflation … [Read more...] about Inflation shock puts Bank of England on course to raise rates again

U.S. Government Sets Bold Goals For The U.S. Bioeconomy – Including A Target For 30% Of Bio-Based Chemicals
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Back in September, President Biden inked a new executive order setting the government on a bold new course for creating a national biostrategy . One of the first tasks assigned to each of the government agencies was to develop goals that outline how they plan to realize the vision of a bio-based economy. Yesterday the White House issued a report highlighting just that. Spearheaded by Georgia Lagoudas, Senior Advisor for Biotechnology and Bioeconomy at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy who is responsible for implementing the Executive Order , the document contains a number of specific strategies developed by agencies like the USDA, NIH, NSF, DOE, and DOD for introducing climate change solutions, food and agriculture innovation, supply chain resilience, human health, as well as cross-cutting advances that can have an impact across all those sectors. Web Accessibility Laws Set To Enter New Era As DOJ Gears Up For Spring Rulemaking
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This May the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division will kickstart a rulemaking procedure some 13 years in the making aimed at codifying technical standards to assist public entities in complying with obligations to make their websites accessible to individuals with disabilities. The original rulemaking process began under the Obama administration back in 2010 but was then abandoned before being withdrawn in 2017. Within this legal vacuum, akin to not having building codes for accessibility in the physical world – inaccessible online public services and inconsistent judicial rulings on how the Americans with Disabilities Act should be applied to the internet have led to confusion and exclusion alike. For the time being, the DOJ’s upcoming rulemaking will only apply to bodies covered by Title II of the ADA i.e., state and local government entities such as schools, public transit facilities, the DMV and … [Read more...] about Web Accessibility Laws Set To Enter New Era As DOJ Gears Up For Spring Rulemaking
