The European Union’s chief executive will seek to increase sales of European military equipment to India and relaunch talks on a free trade deal when she meets India’s prime minister in New Delhi on Monday, a senior EU official said. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s visit is part of Western efforts to encourage India to reduce its ties to Russia after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, and follows a trip last week by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. "There are a whole host of Western leaders reaching out to India right now to see what alternatives we can provide," the senior EU official said. "The key is that we want to bring forward this relationship, work on technology together and bring India into our camp, that’s the main message of our visit," the official said. Von der Leyen arrived in India on Sunday for a two-day official visit, her first as president of European Commission. India has not explicitly condemned the Feb. 24 invasion by Russia, its … [Read more...] about EU chief Ursula von der Leyen to seek closer military, trade and tech ties on India visit

(Reuters) A delegation of senior parliamentarians from the European Union (EU) that is in New Delhi is likely to explore an early-harvest trade deal with India in an attempt to break the deadlock over a proposed mega trade and investment agreement. Recent early-harvest agreements that India signed with Australia and the United Arab Emirates have generated much interest in the EU and politicians from the bloc are keen to work out a similar deal, people familiar with the development said. Proposed in 2007, the Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA) was the subject of 16 formal rounds of talks until 2013 that have remained inconclusive. An early-harvest trade deal is one in which both parties sign off on a set of relatively easily achievable deliverables. Such pacts target … [Read more...] about Exclusive| EU MPs in India to explore early-harvest trade deal

Despite India push, global IPR waiver proposal for COVID vaccines stagnates at WTO
World Trade Organization headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland Ongoing talks at the World Trade Organization (WTO) over a temporary waiver of the global Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) for COVID-19 vaccines has stalled yet again, despite a recent push by India to begin virtual interactions among member states on the issue. Sources said the latest effort by India to drum up support at the multilateral forum has not borne results. More than 16 months after India's proposal to temporarily suspend certain parts of the WTO Agreement on TRIPS so that vaccines and testing technology for COVID-19 could be easily shared, developed nations have continued to hold up talks. Suspending parts of the agreement would allow countries to overcome the legal challenges posed by patents to ensure timely provisioning of affordable medical products. While India has the unofficial backing of more than 120 countries, major global powers have continued … [Read more...] about Despite India push, global IPR waiver proposal for COVID vaccines stagnates at WTO
India offered to help fix the global food crisis. Here’s why it backtracked
New Delhi (CNN Business) A month ago, as Russia's war in Ukraine pushed the world to the brink of a food crisis, India's prime minister Narendra Modi offered to help countries facing shortages. "We already have enough food for our people but our farmers seem to have made arrangements to feed the world," Modi said in April. "We are ready to send the relief from tomorrow itself." The world's second biggest producer of wheat after China was already walking the talk. In the 12 months to March, India cashed in on soaring global prices, exporting a record 7 million metric tons of the grain. That was up more than 250% on the previous year's volumes. It had also set record export targets for the coming year. Now, those lofty goals have been abandoned and wheat exports banned as life-threatening heat waves in South Asia stunt output and push local prices to record highs. India bans wheat exports as heat wave hurts crop, … [Read more...] about India offered to help fix the global food crisis. Here’s why it backtracked
Exclusive | India to approach Russia for concessions on sunflower oil imports
Representative image The government may shortly begin discussions with Russia to secure concessions on sunflower oil imports as domestic retail prices of edible oil continue to climb amid accelerating inflation, people aware of the matter said. India hopes to secure a special carveout or concessional rates for shipments after Russia limited exports of sunflower oil till August 31. Exports of sunflower oil are capped at 1.5 million tonnes till August 31, while overseas sales of sunflower seeds are also banned during this period. The country has placed a 700,000 tonne quota for sunflower meal exports. “Talks are yet to begin and all options remain open. But the government hopes for a special arrangement on sunflower oil, which allows shipments or lower charges for exports to India,” an official said. The Indian government had informed Russia about the need for sunflower oil before as well, but the war with Ukraine had kept Moscow preoccupied and the barrage of international … [Read more...] about Exclusive | India to approach Russia for concessions on sunflower oil imports
India prohibits wheat exports with immediate effect
Representative Image India has prohibited wheat exports with immediate effect, according to a government notification issued late Friday, as the world's second-largest wheat producer attempts to stabilise domestic prices. However, export shipments for which irrevocable letters of credit (LoC) were issued on or before the date of this announcement will be approved, according to a May 13 notification from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). "The export policy of wheat is prohibited with immediate effect," the DGFT said. It also clarified that wheat exports will be allowed on the basis of permission granted by the Government of India to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their governments. Following a nearly 40% rise in global rates in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine crisis, and also as India ramped up exports, wheat and cereal prices rose in India. The country is expected to face a shortfall of the cereal in the … [Read more...] about India prohibits wheat exports with immediate effect
Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India
The top AIDS research institute in India is set to undertake a first-ever study to assess the role of dating apps such as Tinder and OkCupid, among others, in contributing to the HIV and AIDS burden in the country. In the West, such studies have established that dating apps may be leading to a rise in HIV cases among adolescents, but no empirical evidence is available from India yet on whether there is a change in risk behaviour following the use of such dating apps. Scientists at the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that their discussion with various stakeholders suggested that a large number of men having sex with men and female sex workers may have shifted to dating apps. “Therefore, we thought this would be an important study to understand the correlation between dating apps and AIDS in India in the changing social scenario that is heavily dependent on technology, mobile phones and internet,” said a senior … [Read more...] about Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India
India grows fastest among major economies, Omicron risks seen
India grew at the fastest pace of any major economy in the July-September quarter but economists said disruptions from the emerging Omicron coronavirus variant risked slowing the recovery, especially given India's low vaccination rates. Asia's third-largest economy has rebounded strongly from last year's deep pandemic-induced slump, boosted by vaccinations and stronger government spending, economists said. But new COVID-19 variants, a global slowdown and rising manufacturing prices all pose risks to growth. Gross domestic product expanded 8.4% in the September quarter from a year earlier, statistics ministry data showed on Tuesday, in line with 8.4% growth predicted in a Reuters poll and compared with a 20.1% expansion in the previous quarter. "Data clearly shows that corporate income and profit are above the pre-pandemic level," K.V. Subramanian, chief economist at the finance ministry told reporters after the data release. He said double-digit growth was expected in the … [Read more...] about India grows fastest among major economies, Omicron risks seen
