Last summer, Greg Smith was standing in front of a Home Depot when he got an unexpected phone call. When he answered, the voice of NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren greeted him on the other end. “I said, ‘Oh! You’re down!’ and he said, ‘No, I’m up here,'” Smith recalls. “He had called me from space.” advertisement advertisement More specifically, Lindgren had called from the International Space Station (ISS), where he was to remain for five months. Smith, a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), has for the last 25 years trained NASA’s astronaut crews in the use of IMAX recording equipment on board the shuttle and ISS. He’d worked with Lindgren before, and the two had become friends. “We were just shooting the breeze,” Smith says. In other words, an astronaut had called him from 200 miles above Earth just to say hey. “I gotta tell you, there’s nothing like getting a call … [Read more...] about Why students are sending Earth sounds to astronauts

I love it when marketing managers talk about how it’s their job to help funnel leads to salespeople, and that they can’t control anything after that magical transference of responsibility. advertisement advertisement I also enjoy it when salespeople talk about how they spend too much time sifting through weak leads from those same marketing managers to close a sale. Or when I enter a store after being enticed by a compelling marketing promotion and hot price on some product I can’t wait to purchase (phone, climbing gear, and chocolate all come to mind), only to be ignored by the salespeople. The truth is, we’re all in this together: designers, marketing managers, and salespeople. And we have to work together to create compelling communications that support our brands, drive through sales, and ensure that our customers keep coming back. You’d think the big dogs in the consumer marketing space would have wised up to this new truism of the … [Read more...] about Channel Marketing + Sales = Branding

Inside a sprawling recycling center in Florida, as bottles, cans, boxes, and other recyclables move down conveyor belts, 14 different robots use artificial intelligence to identify each material and automatically sort it, moving twice as quickly as humans doing the same job. The company announced today that it has raised $16 million in a series A round of funding led by … [Read more...] about Meet the tireless robots that are helping to tackle the recycling crisis
If you see a spectacular image of a galaxy far, far away, chances are it comes from one telescope. Since 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has been hanging out 350 miles above Earth’s surface, capturing the wonders of the universe removed from Earth’s hazy atmosphere. Hubble brings us some of the clearest, most vivid images of the birth and death of stars and galaxies available. And though the photographs beamed back to Earth represent significant scientific data about the state of our ever-expanding universe, there’s also an undeniably artistic aspect to them, as the (visually spectacular) new book Expanding Universe argues. The telescope has helped nail down our best estimate for the age of the universe, in addition to discovering new galaxies. Hubble takes high-resolution images in black and white and transmits them to NASA astronomers. The astronomers then use data culled from different types of radiation invisible to our eyes–infrared, microwave, x-ray, … [Read more...] about 18 Amazing Images From NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope
