January 23, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Novak Djokovic Novak Djokovic’s bid for a 10th Australian Open crown shifted up a gear on Monday as he raced into the quarter-finals with a centre court masterclass and left his hamstring troubles behind. The Serbian great set up a quarter-final against Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev and was thrilled to report the hamstring strain on his left leg was no longer bothering him. ”I cannot say I’m sorry that you haven’t watched a longer match,” Djokovic joked to the crowd. ”I really wanted to win in straight sets. Wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Anshu Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on January 19. (Source: AFP) Winner by fall. That would sound good in a wrestling competition. Sadly, fans of Indian sport are bracing themselves to see the fall of either the Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh or an elite grappler Vinesh Phogat. She made sexual harassment charges against him when staging a protest along with fellow wrestlers at the Jantar Mantar. The image of Indian sport, not just wrestling, has taken a beating. And everyone who cares for sport in the country will agree that things should never have come to such a pass. India is now left with an either-or situation and with nobody coming out of this sordid episode smelling of roses. To be sure, sport must be played in a psychologically safe environment, and it is imperative that it is not just elite sport that gets the attention. While the elite athletes in national camps may have … [Read more...] about Institute a mechanism to deal with sexual harassment cases in sports

Oil rebounds as China demand recovery optimism supports prices

January 25, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Oil Crude oil prices rebounded on Wednesday as demand recovery hopes in top importer China following its exit from COVID-19 pandemic curbs provided support after prices dropped in the previous session on concerns about global economic growth. Brent crude futures gained 59 cents, or 0.7%, to $86.72 per barrel by 0214 GMT after falling 2.3% in the previous session. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 46 cents, or 0.6%, to $80.59 per barrel, having dropped 1.8% on Tuesday. The economic worries were exacerbated by a bigger-than-expected build in U.S. oil inventories that was reported after the market settled on Tuesday. U.S. crude stocks rose by about 3.4 million barrels in the week ended Jan. 20, according to market sources citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. That was triple the build of about 1 million forecast in a preliminary Reuters poll on Monday. "But the build is expected to be temporary as the supply disruptions from a cold … [Read more...] about Oil rebounds as China demand recovery optimism supports prices

Budget 2023: Congress seeks discussion on China in Budget session of Parliament

January 27, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

(Representative image: PTI) The Congress on Friday took serious note of a research paper presented at the DGP-IGP annual conference, alleging that it has exposed the government's "weak-kneed approach" towards China and demanded a discussion on the issue in the Budget session of Parliament. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spell out if he is still "afraid" of China or still "loves" the country. Addressing a press conference, he said PM Modi's clean chit to China has been shredded into pieces by a Police Meet security paper, alleging that the Modi government's "continued denial" of Chinese illegal occupation and construction of infrastructure has emboldened China and compromised India's national security. "The DGP-IGPs conference exposes the Modi government's 'weak-kneed approach towards China," he alleged, noting that the recent three-day conference attended by PM Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval … [Read more...] about Budget 2023: Congress seeks discussion on China in Budget session of Parliament

Union Budget 2023: US industry urges FM to rationalise, simplify direct and indirect taxes in India

January 28, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Ahead of the annual budget presentation, an India-centric top US strategic and business advocacy group has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to simplify and rationalise direct and indirect taxation system in India, a move it believes would increase the confidence of global investors and yield greater foreign direct investment. "Rationalise corporate tax rates for foreign companies," said the US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) in its submission to the finance ministry ahead of the annual budget presentations on February 1. Situation along eastern border with China stable but unpredictable as boundary undefined: GOC-in-C

January 27, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

(Representative Image) The situation along the eastern border with China is "stable" but "unpredictable" due to the absence of delineation of boundaries, said General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Eastern Command, Lt Gen R P Kalita. The Eastern Command takes care of the LAC in the Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim sectors. Lt Gen Kalita also stated that the Army is constantly monitoring the activities across the border and is well prepared to meet any emerging challenges. "The whole problem stems from the fact that the border between India and China is not clearly defined. There are different perceptions about the Line of Actual Control (LAC), which lead to problems. "However, let me assure you that the situation in the eastern border in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh is stable but unpredictable due to the absence of delineation of borders," he told a Meet the Press programme at the Press Club, Kolkata.
