Though only a 6th grader on 9/11, he vowed to defend his country while watching the day’s tragic events. On his 18th birthday, he attempted enlisting but uncovered a secret which crushed his ambition. Valdovino’s parents never told him he was born in Mexico — or that he was an undocumented immigrant. Though the DREAM Act never passed into law, young immigrants who lack papers and were brought to the United States as children are often called “Dreamers.” So are those granted some protections through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which permits them to stay in the country, provided they fit certain criteria. Now, Valdovino’s life story has become a new off-Broadway musical. Royal Flush: Inside Crypto’s Most Exclusive Gathering
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin P oker chips, high stakes, and big money. Throughout last week, a few yards away from the Caribbean's largest casino in the Bahamian capital, Nassau, about 2,000 people gathered at the Baha Mar resort’s convention center to discuss cryptocurrencies and the next iteration of the World Wide Web a.k.a Web3. Just last month, a similar albeit much larger crowd took over Miami Beach to pay homage to the invention that started it all—bitcoin. But if the 25,000-person expo in South Florida felt like Coachella for the bitcoin faithful , the latest summit, dubbed “Crypto Bahamas”, inched closer in resemblance to the World Economic Forum’s Davos conference, not minding the casual dress code. Pretty much everyone from CEOs to developers wore flip-flops, sneakers, and t-shirts bearing slogans such as “NFTs are a scam” and “Burnt Finance”. Co-organized by billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto derivatives exchange FTX and the … [Read more...] about Royal Flush: Inside Crypto’s Most Exclusive Gathering
Why Keeping Bitcoin On An Exchange Is Driving The Price Down
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When you purchase Bitcoin from a centralized exchange, you never know whether your account is credited with actual Bitcoin or paper Bitcoin. Paper Bitcoin is a "I owe you" Bitcoin, implying that the exchange owes you a certain amount of Bitcoin. The only way to ensure that the Bitcoin you purchased is genuine is to withdraw it to a self-storage wallet or sell it for another asset or product. To save on transaction fees, most exchanges will not create a separate wallet for your account and transfer your Bitcoin to that address. The Bitcoin balance displayed on your centralized exchange account is a number next to your name on a spreadsheet. This explains why, despite Bitcoin's 10-minute block time, exchanges can instantly transfer Bitcoin to your account. That is, the time it takes to transfer Bitcoin from one address to another. Exchanges keep their Bitcoin in a wallet or set of wallets where they possess the private keys … [Read more...] about Why Keeping Bitcoin On An Exchange Is Driving The Price Down

Safari programme continues to draw tourists to Kapit
THE Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari (SRBK), a 23km annual rafting adventure programme, is expected to bring in an estimated 1.2 million tourists to Sarawak. Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the popular rafting programme was one of the state’s major tourism products. It is also one of the legacies of the late Tan Sri Dr Amar James Jemut Masing, the Sarawak deputy chief minister who succumbed to Covid-19 on Oct 31 last year. Nanta said Masing founded SRBK, where participants could race down Sungai Baleh to Kapit in rafts, 25 years ago. “The adventure programme, which is usually held in April, is still actively carried out to this day and has helped promote Kapit to visitors,” he said. The safari is expected to bring in RM3.2bil in tourism revenue. “Kapit has many natural attractions such as its rivers and forests. Events such as this one can bring in more tourists to see what Kapit has to offer,” he added. Nanta was speaking at the … [Read more...] about Safari programme continues to draw tourists to Kapit
Presidents often have good starts
Yeh Young-june The author is an editorial writer of the JoongAng Ilbo. After Korea introduced the direct presidential election system in 1987, all presidents have tried to close their distance from the public during the early period of their presidential terms. President Roh Tae-woo, for the first time, stopped using an honorific term to refer to himself. President Kim Young-sam often had a bowl of handmade noodle soup, a casual dish in Korea, for his lunch at the Blue House. President Kim Dae-jung stopped the usage of “his excellency,” which was considered a relic of authoritarianism. President Roh Moo-hyun stepped out from his car to give autographs to elementary school children. President Lee Myung-bak told his staffers to take out the honorific term used to refer him in the Blue House reports addressed to him. President Park Geun-hye changed a long-held seating arrangement which placed her in the top seat during ministries’ briefing. President Moon Jae-in stood in line at … [Read more...] about Presidents often have good starts
Remembering Bloody May 1992
Soldiers arrest a demonstrator at the height of Black May uprising on May 19, 1992. The protests were staged against post-coup prime minister Suchinda Kraprayoon, who was not elected to the position. Bangkok Post This month commemorates the 30-year anniversary of the Bloody May events in 1992 that witnessed extensive violence against street demonstrators and the subsequent fall of the military-linked government that had come to power due to the 1991 coup. What then are some of the lessons to remember, resonating from the past to the present and the future? The 1991 coup was instigated by a group of military leaders to overturn the elected civilian government on the basis of alleged corruption. It also annulled the constitution, but the junta which came to power was willing to put in place a civilian leader as prime minister in the interim. However, the subsequent revised constitution opened the door to a controlled Senate and an unelected prime minister. Although the key coup … [Read more...] about Remembering Bloody May 1992
