Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The non-profit organisation, Seattle Audubon Society, has formally changed its name and will now be known as Birds Connect Seattle © Copyright by GrrlScientist | hosted by Forbes Last August, I told you about the Seattle Audubon Society , a community-based bird conservation and birding organisation where I was a member, and its decision to change its name to be more inclusive to people from all walks of life (more here ). They’ve made their choice to formally change their name to “Birds Connect Seattle”. That’s quite a mouthful, isn’t it? This bold decision contrasts with the National Audubon Society ’s recent decision, reached after one year of deliberations, namely, not to change their name. “I understand people may be wondering how that is possible if ‘Audubon’ remains in our name. That is a question the Board has grappled with, and ultimately, they decided that the organization transcends … [Read more...] about Name Change Celebrates Inclusive Future For Seattle Audubon Society

Korean companies may walk away from CHIPS Act money
The U.S. President Joe Biden signs the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC on August 9, 2022. [AFP/YONHAP] The United States is pushing foreign chip makers to disclose sensitive business data, including yield rates, to receive subsidies under the CHIPS and Science Act. Onerous is the requirement that some companies might decide not to apply for funding. The yield rate, the amount of a silicon wafer that is successfully made into dies, is considered a key indicator to determine a chip producer's manufacturing capabilities. It is often confidential. Other required information includes production capacity for each wafer, operation rates, estimated production yields, semiconductor prices on first-year production, annual production figures and the increase or decrease rate of the cost. All of the information need to be submitted as Excel files. It can be used to verify the final numbers and the calculation process, the U.S. … [Read more...] about Korean companies may walk away from CHIPS Act money
How To See 5 Planets Line Up In The Sky With The Moon Wednesday
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Jupiter and Venus have been lending some brilliant supporting performances to the moon in the night sky for weeks and now you can also catch Mars, Mercury and even shy Uranus as they all form a line with the Moon this week. You also won’t have to stay up into the wee hours to see the show. NASA astronomer Bill Cooke says to head outside shortly after sunset and look to the west. Mercury and Jupiter will be closest to the horizon and you’ll have to be prompt to catch them as they’ll be the first to disappear behind the shadow of the Earth roughly 25 minutes after the sun goes down. The other three planets will stretch about halfway up the night sky. Each evening Jupiter will be setting a few minutes earlier, so it will become more difficult to spot it in the twilight until it’s impossible next week. Cooke says you should be able to see this alignment from anywhere on Earth that has clear skies and a view of … [Read more...] about How To See 5 Planets Line Up In The Sky With The Moon Wednesday
A Psychologist Shares 3 Tips To Help You Become A More Patient Person
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Many people come to therapy complaining about how waiting is just too hard for them. They may say things like: “I know I just have to wait for him to call like he says, but I still end up calling him first.” “If I could have just held out a little bit longer, that promotion would have been mine.” “I don’t understand why it would take so long, it’s just too frustrating.” While intellectually we may be aware of how good things brew in time, in practice we often struggle to sit back and let things fall into place. Anger, irritation, and frustration are a trio of negative emotions that contribute to the vicious cycle of hopelessness and increased impatience. Here are three things to practice if you struggle to stay on the right side of time. #1. Accept uncertainty A hard truth for many to learn is to be okay giving up control and taking in experiences as they come. The absence of predictability might … [Read more...] about A Psychologist Shares 3 Tips To Help You Become A More Patient Person
Planetary Parade: See Five Planets Line Up In The Night Sky This Week
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Have you seen the “planetary parade” after sunset? It’s getting a lot of media attention, partly because Jupiter is about to sink into the Sun’s glare and ruin it, but you can still glimpse some or all or five planets naked-eye and with binoculars this week. Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus and Mars are all visible right after sunset—though Jupiter and Mercury could be tricky depending on where you observe from. Get somewhere high with a clear view of the western horizon to watch the sunset. After sunset have a look for Jupiter and Mercury very close to the horizon. You may need binoculars. Above them will be a very bright Venus, while high in the sky will be red Mars, flanked by an almost First Quarter Moon tonight. If you want to watch it online then The Virtual Telescope Project will stream it live at 17:45 UTC (13:45 EDT) on Tuesday, March 28, 2023. Earth-Sized Planet In ‘Solar System 2.0’ Has No Atmosphere, Says Webb Telescope
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have done something incredible by measuring the temperature of rocky exoplanet TRAPPIST-1b. Astronomers are desperate to explore smaller, rockier and more Earth-like planets such as those in the TRAPPIST-1 system, where seven rocky planets orbit a red dwarf (M) star about 40 light years distant in the constellation Aquarius. All are similar in size, mass, density, and stellar heating to the rocky planets Venus, Earth, and Mars in our own solar system. TRAPPIST-1 b, the innermost planet, has an orbital distance about one hundredth that of Earth’s and receives about four times the amount of energy that Earth gets from the Sun. TRAPPIST-1 has been dubbed a “Solar System 2.0,” but that might be about to change. Published in Nature this week, the detection of heat energy given off in the form of infrared light from a small, rocky planet much like those found in our own … [Read more...] about Earth-Sized Planet In ‘Solar System 2.0’ Has No Atmosphere, Says Webb Telescope
Giant Cosmic Explosion May Be Biggest Since Human Civilization Began, Say Scientists
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The most powerful class of explosions in the universe—a gamma-ray burst—reached the solar system on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2022. It was 70 times brighter than any yet seen. A telescope on the International Space Station sensed it. So did NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and scores of satellites. It was even detected by the Voyager 1 probe now in interstellar space. The subject of a special edition of The Astrophysical Journal Letters this week, this pulse of intense radiation has been called the “BOAT”—the brightest of all time—but what was it? “GRB 221009A was likely the brightest burst at X-ray and gamma-ray energies to occur since human civilization began,” said Eric Burns, LSU Department of Physics and Astronomy assistant professor. He led research into about 7,000 gamma-ray bursts and concluded that events like GRB 221009A occur roughly once in every 10,000 years. Gamma-ray bursts are thought to … [Read more...] about Giant Cosmic Explosion May Be Biggest Since Human Civilization Began, Say Scientists
Companies At The Edge Of Chaos: Why HR Must Embrace Data Beyond Surveys To Reinvent Organizations
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As the way we live, operate and work start to change for good in the new century, organizations are searching for ways to become more future-ready . CEOs are fiercely pushing the dial on several organizational elements with the intention to make numbers grow while CHROs are working diligently to meet changing requirements without breaking the system. The question continues to linger in the back of today’s professional’s minds is whether one can actually transform organizations at the edge of chaos by simply pushing forward. Despite the efforts, research suggests the business-as-usual approach rather results in an organizational paralysis filled by thousands of confused and consumed people being pulled and pushed in multiple directions. Therein lies the current challenge for practitioners: Today’s organizations are set up with traditional structures, operating and management tactics such as coordination, hierarchy, matrix, … [Read more...] about Companies At The Edge Of Chaos: Why HR Must Embrace Data Beyond Surveys To Reinvent Organizations
The Coefficient Of Skill: Why Executives Need To Play To Their Strength

Focusing on your strengths is such a time-honored strategy it is close to being a platitude. However, it is very tempting as an executive to ignore this wisdom for immediate expediency. One of the most dangerous phrases an executive, or entrepreneur, can utter is “I can do that quicker.” Yes, you probably can, but is it the right thing for you to do? If you focus on improving your weaknesses versus playing to your strengths, you risk being average. You can always hire out to compensate for your weaknesses. But what happens if you are better at multiple things than your current team or even those you can hire?
