By CAROLYN THOMPSON and MICHAEL BALSAMO BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The 18-year-old gunman who authorities say killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket had previously threatened a shooting at his high school and was sent for mental health treatment, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Payton Gendron had appeared on the radar of police last year after he threatened to carry out a shooting at Susquehanna High School around the time of graduation, the official said. New York State Police said troopers were called to the Conklin school on June 8, 2021, for a report that a 17-year-old student had made threatening statements. Police said the student was taken into custody under a state mental health law and taken to a hospital for an evaluation. The police statement did not give the student’s name. The law enforcement official was not authorized to speak publicly on the investigation and did so on the condition of anonymity. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline An 18-year-old man accused of killing 10 people in a racially motivated shooting Saturday in Buffalo drew police attention last year after making a threatening statement at his high school, and was given a mental health evaluation at the time, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a Sunday press conference. Key Facts Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, New York, was arrested yesterday and charged with shooting 13 people—10 fatally—at a Tops Friendly Market store, in what FBI Special Agent Steve Belongia described as a hate crime perpetrated by a racist extremist. Gendron allegedly visited Buffalo on Friday to do reconnaissance in what was apparently the first time he had visited the city, which is 168 miles from Conklin, Gramaglia said. Gendron was not on law enforcement’s radar at the time of the shooting, but he was brought in by police for a mental health evaluation after making a … [Read more...] about Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say
In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? The future of forests is on a … [Read more...] about In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
Google Just Acknowledged What Many Businesses Already Feared
In a lot of ways, the announcement Monday, first reported by The Wall Street Journal , that Google would allow its employees to work remotely until next July isn't all that surprising. Other companies, Twitter , in particular, have gone further to say that its employees could work from home forever if they want. Except, this is a little different. See, as far as it seems, Google plans to bring its employees back to the office. The company had previously said that employees should expect to be back at the Googleplex by January 2021. That's the same timeline as Amazon's. Apple hasn't said for sure, but indicated it wouldn't be before the end of the year. Microsoft, on the other hand, has said it would return employees to the office in October. Now Google has extended that another six months, acknowledging what many people fear: The global pandemic isn't going away anytime soon--and neither is working from home. The Wall Street Journal's report … [Read more...] about Google Just Acknowledged What Many Businesses Already Feared
Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. These Strategies Can Help
In my line of business, which involves the sale of drug testing kits, I run into many a sad story about how addiction has ruined lives and caused an immense amount of grief among people who get hooked on any number of substances, especially opioids . And while you may think I am talking about people who were born into poverty and were down on their luck and looking for an escape (and I've heard those stories, too), I'm not. I'm talking about people who have lived privileged lives, earned college degrees, started successful practices and followed their entrepreneurial dream. David J. Linden, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says there is some evidence that the traits that make a good entrepreneur also make one susceptible to addiction. It can also be a rather lonely road entrepreneurs walk as they get their businesses off the ground and that, coupled with a constant fear of failure hanging over their heads, may also lead to … [Read more...] about Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. One in four Indian adults is hypertensive, experts blame sedentary lifestyle
IHCI report The Indian Council of Medical Research (CMR)’s hypertension control report says at least one in every four Indian adults suffers from hypertension, but only about 10 percent get their blood pressure under control. Experts have identified a sedentary lifestyle, higher beverage and salt intake as well as lack of sufficient sleep because of smartphone addiction as the reasons responsible for the persistent increase in the incidence of hypertension. “It is estimated that at least one in four adults has hypertension in India. Still, only about 10% of them have their blood pressure under control,” the India Hypertension Control Initiative (ICHI) report said. IHCI is a multi-partner initiative of the Union Health Ministry, ICMR, and the World Health Organisation (WHO), launched to achieve the government’s goal of a 25 percent relative reduction in raised blood pressure in 2017. Family Firms in India: Performance and Relevance
While the average trend is negative, there are family firms across industries that have performed exceedingly well. (Photo by Mikhail Nilov/Pexels) By SOUGATA RAY, NUPUR PAVAN BANG, NAVNEET BHATNAGAR Concentrated ownership of a firm in the hands of a family presents unique opportunities and challenges that impact its performance. In India, family firms are a dominant force in the economy, contributing significantly to nation-building, the exchequer, creation of jobs and asset creation. Their footprints on the Indian economy are indelible. It is imperative for family firms to perform well, grow profitably, create value and contribute to economic progress if India has to realise its full potential. Researchers have argued that family firms have better monitoring and lower agency costs than non-family firms, have incentives to take long-term views of maximising firm value, and are value-driven organisations. Yet, many of them are found to be plagued by rent-seeking … [Read more...] about Family Firms in India: Performance and Relevance
Shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism: Are Indian family firms prepared?
The governance scores of family firms in the ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) rating, as per Reuters and Sustainalytics data, were found to be lower than those of other firms. (Photo by Akil Mazumder/Pexels) SOUGATA RAY, NUPUR PAVAN BANG & NAVNEET BHATNAGAR The debate whether companies should be governed with the sole objective of maximising shareholder value (shareholder capitalism as reflected in the shareholder primacy model advocated by Prof. Milton Friedman) or balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders (stakeholder capitalism as reflected in stakeholder primacy model advocated by Prof. R. Edward Freeman), including shareholders, has been raging for several decades. Climate disasters, rapidly rising inequalities and COVID-19 have perhaps put to rest the shareholder vs. stakeholder primacy debate and tilted the balance firmly in favour of the latter. Modern corporations, irrespective of ownership, have an obligation to act in the interests of … [Read more...] about Shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism: Are Indian family firms prepared?

MacKenzie Scott, Michael Bloomberg Among The Biggest Billionaire Donors To Abortion-Rights Groups “T hough the nation’s wealthiest philanthropists have been giving to reproductive rights groups for decades, the cause constitutes a relatively small portion of overall philanthropic giving,” reports Rachel Sandler: According to the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, $1.7 billion went to reproductive rights nonprofits from 2015 to 2019. That’s 2.2% of the $76 billion from foundations during that time period.
