Markets Close Mixed on Final Full Trading Day Ahead of Christmas
U.S. equity markets ended the day mixed as the Dow Industrials put on a little holiday rally, but the S&P 500 gave up gains in the final few minutes of trading. The Nasdaq ended the day slightly lower in a reversal of the trend we have seen all week. Financial stocks and small caps are this week's winners, as investors are betting on higher real interest rates in the future and a broader economic recovery. This article is an excerpt from our free The Market Sum newsletter. Sign up here to receive it in your inbox daily. The recovery is not happening in the labor market as we learned today that 803,000 Americans filed for first-time unemployment claims in the week ending Dec. 19. While that was lower than expected, it's still the third week in a row of weekly jobless claims topping 800,000. Furthermore, personal consumption expenditures in November fell for the first time in seven months, and the U.S. housing market is showing signs of slowing. President Trump did not sign … [Read more...] about Markets Close Mixed on Final Full Trading Day Ahead of Christmas
‘Velma’ Is Now The Third Worst Rated TV Show In IMDB History
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Two more episodes of Velma aired on HBO Max this week, and they do not seem to have changed any minds about what is genuinely one of the worst-reviewing shows I’ve ever seen. A rare combination of anti-woke review bombers, left-leaning viewers who think the series is just plain bad, and Scooby Doo enthusiasts upset by the changes made to the IP have made Velma one of the lowest audience scoring series I’ve seen in HBO history, currently sitting at a 6% on Rotten Tomatoes . But zooming out, Velma is also currently reviewing as the third worst-rated TV series of every single show in history, according to IMDB. Velma currently has a 1.3 out of 10 rating, which puts it at #3 for the worst reviewed shows ever in IMDB’s bottom 100 , among shows with at least 5,000 reviews in. Ironically, The Last of Us, which premiered on HBO the same week, is currently tied with four other shows to be the highest reviewed series on … [Read more...] about ‘Velma’ Is Now The Third Worst Rated TV Show In IMDB History

US stocks rise as investors eye growth prospects
Representative Image Wall Street stocks picked up Wednesday despite worries about the US economic outlook, as investors await key data expected to give clues on where monetary policy is headed. While markets saw a choppy first trading session of the year on Tuesday, analysts say incoming data on the manufacturing sector, jobs and most recent Federal Reserve policy meeting will offer added insight on growth prospects. Shortly after trading began, the Dow Jones Industrial Average picked up 0.3 percent to 33,240.73. The broad-based S&P 500 rose 0.5 percent to 3,841.59, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 0.6 percent to 10,446.96. New Predictions From CloudQuant’s Alternative Data Crystal Ball
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Another Holiday Season has come and gone since, and the holiday cheer did not elicit the much hoped for Santa Claus rally at year’s end. What some investors got instead were news of the ongoing collateral damage caused by the continuing unravelling of former crypto exchange, FTX. The crypto market is just showing signs of a dead cat bounce, inflation is still on the minds of consumers, and now the tech sector is laying off employees like tax accountants after tax season. A recent belated gift by the equity markets has provided some relief and rallied the pundits around a peak interest rate narrative. We check in with the indomitable Morgan Slade, the head sage of CloudQuant to see what insights his data science team have discovered since we last checked in with him. M&M’s Candy Mascots Put On ‘Indefinite Pause’ Amid Tucker Carlson’s Attacks On Their Alleged Sexuality And Weight
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Candy company Mars announced Monday it is putting its M&M’s “spokescandies”— the brand’s anthropomorphic sugary mascots—on an “indefinite pause,” after a new rollout featuring the characters became the subject of attacks from conservative pundits like Tucker Carlson, nearly one year after the brand received backlash for its “woke M&M’S.” Key Facts Earlier this month M&M’s launched limited edition packaging which had the words “Supporting Women” on them and featured the brand’s three female spokescandies: Brown, Green and newly introduced Purple. It’s the first time M&M’s packaging has solely featured its female characters, and the initiative aimed to “celebrate women everywhere who are flipping the status quo”; money from the sale of the packages was donated to female-focused charities. Fox News personality Carlson dedicated a segment to the candies, saying “the woke M&M’s … [Read more...] about M&M’s Candy Mascots Put On ‘Indefinite Pause’ Amid Tucker Carlson’s Attacks On Their Alleged Sexuality And Weight
New Year’s Resolutions For Those In Learning And Development
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin David James is CLO at 360Learning , host of The Learning & Development Podcast and former Director of L&D for The Walt Disney Company. Many of us are entering 2023 off the back of a more relaxed and indulgent end to 2022. It’s to be expected, right? But as we look to right the wrongs of our excesses, it may be time to dial back on unhealthy foods, get back to a level of activity more acceptable for land mammals and engage our brains in more nourishing pursuits. For many of us, this is the time for New Year’s resolutions to right some wrongs, stop doing so many detrimental things and do more of what will move us forward. This may be the case for learning and development (L&D), too. What have we been doing that’s detrimental—or not doing us any good—that we may need to self-correct to get us back on the right track?
