Long before its opening in August, the Salesforce Transit Center was a major source of controversy in San Francisco. In the eight years since breaking ground, the center has been embroiled in a number of legal battles, including a longstanding feud with Millennium Tower, a 58-story luxury skyscraper that opened in 2009. The tower is now sinking and tilting, and its developers say the transit center is to blame. Meanwhile, the Salesforce Center has seen its own structural flaws: In late September, the terminal was closed due to a cracked beam on the third floor deck, generating concerns about the building’s safety. The best places to live and work for tech professionals aren't in San Francisco or even the West Coast, according to a new study which offers a snapshot of the country's evolving tech labor market. Cities in southern states claimed the top spots, according to the study released Tuesday by the Computing Technology Industry Association, an Illinois-based IT trade group. The study ranked locations based on job openings, projected job growth and cost of living. Charlotte, North Carolina, earned the No. 1 slot, followed by Raleigh, North Carolina, and Austin, Texas. Southern hubs in Dallas, Atlanta and Huntsville, Alabama, also made the top 10, in what the study described as a geographically diverse list, underscoring the demand for tech professionals outside of traditional hot spots in California and Washington state.But the usual suspects made the list too.
