NASI kukus is a dish where portions of rice are individually steamed in aluminium containers to be served upon order so that customers can enjoy fragrant and fluffy rice. The rice is usually presented with ayam goreng berempah (Malay spiced fried chicken), curry and sambal (spicy Malaysian condiment mostly made from chilli peppers). Those craving this dish can check out the Nasi Kukus Farnis stall in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. It is among other food and drink stalls set up under a tent at Masjid Saidina Umar Al-Khattab’s parking lot, opposite CIMB Bank. Nasi Kukus Farnis is open only from 11am to 2pm, and has been around since 2008. Its owner Rosnani Abdul Hamid was the first to set up a stall in the vicinity. DESPITE facing inflation, three food stall operators in Johor Baru are keeping prices of their dishes low to ease customers’ burden. Patrons at a roti canai stall in Kampung Pasir can still enjoy hot drinks like coffee and teh tarik for only RM1 per cup. Stall operator Madi Umar, 61, has maintained the price for many years because he knows that many are facing financial difficulties, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
