Sam Bankman-Fried (Bloomberg filepix by Lam Yik) - A + A (June 23): Sam Bankman-Fried, the crypto billionaire who co-founded digital-asset exchange FTX Trading Ltd, is providing credit lines to try to stem contagions for his beleaguered industry. Crypto lending platform BlockFi Inc, which had been raising funds at a reduced valuation, said on Tuesday that it secured a US$250 million revolving line of credit from FTX. Last week, crypto exchange Voyager Digital Ltd, whose shares are down 90% this year on Toronto Stock Exchange, got a US$200 million credit line — a mix of cash and USDC stablecoins — as well as a separate, 15,000-Bitcoin revolving facility from Alameda Research, Bankman-Fried’s trading firm. A wave of liquidation has triggered fear of contagion risks in the crypto industry, after a broad-based selloff in digital assets and the spectacular collapse of the TerraUSD and Luna tokens. Major lenders Celsius Network Ltd and Babel Finance have frozen … [Read more...] about Crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried doles out credit lines to stem contagion

Should Golf Be A Bigger Part Of Your Nonprofit’s Fundraising Mix?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The pandemic’s restriction of big group events have made the last two years very challenging for nonprofits so development executives are on the lookout for ways to enhance their fundraising efforts. Interestingly, one growth area has been golf tournament fundraising which has been on the rise for several reasons: — Since golf is played outdoors, tournaments can easily be arranged to enable social distancing. — The sport saw record rounds played during 2020 and then continued to increase by 5% in 2021, according to the National Golf Foundation. — After years of primarily being managed manually or using very unsophisticated systems, online technology has emerged that streamlines golf tournament fundraisers and handles golf-specific elements like hole assignments, team pairings, facility information, and sponsorships. — Golf remains a generally upscale activity with golfers having a median household income of … [Read more...] about Should Golf Be A Bigger Part Of Your Nonprofit’s Fundraising Mix?
Behind The Scenes: OKC Thunder Rookie Jalen Williams’ Ascension Into Draft Lottery
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “We draft people first and players second,” said Thunder GM Sam Presti last summer. When Santa Clara guard Jalen Williams was taken No. 12 overall in Thursday night’s draft, it was surprising to some. However, when you dig deeper into his game and personal story it makes complete sense. A late bloomer, Williams wasn’t on many NBA teams’ radars as a top pick until after his final college season. At the Thunder’s rookie introductory press conference on Saturday, Presti even admitted that the team didn’t truly consider Williams in the lottery until later in the draft process. “The truth on Jalen is our eyes really opened later to him in this process,” Presti said. “I wish I could tell you that last year at Santa Clara I could say we knew this guy was a lottery pick. That wasn’t the case.” It took a spectacular pre-draft process on and off the court to spark what ended up being a perfect scenario for both parties. … [Read more...] about Behind The Scenes: OKC Thunder Rookie Jalen Williams’ Ascension Into Draft Lottery
The Ikea Meatball Reimagined 8 Different Ways
In April, Ikea introduced vegan-friendly Veggie Balls alongside its beloved Swedish meatballs, a first step toward offering a wider selection of healthy, sustainable food. But if 2015 is the year of the Veggie Ball, what does the Ikea meatball of 2025, 2035, or even 2045 look like? advertisement advertisement According to Space10, Ikea’s independently-run innovation lab in downtown Copenhagen , it could be meatballs made of bugs, trash, artificial flesh, or something else entirely. Those are just some of the delectables on display in Tomorrow’s Meatball , a visual exploration of the future of food that uses Ikea’s iconic meatball as its mascot. Teaming up with chef Simon Perez in a project led by creative-in-residence [Bas van de Poel]( http://www.basvandepoel.com/ ), Space10 has a smorgasbord of eight different types of meatballs, each of which explores a different source of sustainable food. There’s the Artificial Meatball, a meatball grown … [Read more...] about The Ikea Meatball Reimagined 8 Different Ways
Australian Mining Billionaire Touts A Green Revolution In U.S. Coal Country — With Skepticism Trailing Close Behind
Andrew Forrest travels the globe trying to persuade leaders of industry and politics — and rank-and-file workers — that despite his polluting past he’s the man to champion green hydrogen as the clean fuel of the future. M ore than a couple of the dozen or so coal-plant workers gathered at West Virginia’s Pleasants Power Station in April to hear Andrew Forrest push his green hydrogen agenda rolled their eyes as he spoke. “I believe this coal-fired power station has a huge future,” the Australian mining billionaire told them. The employees could be forgiven for their skepticism. Just weeks before, they learned their plant, surrounded by other closures throughout coal country, would be the latest to shut down . Forrest’s message was heartfelt, contrarian and a bit pie in the sky. In West Virginia, the second-largest coal-producing region in the U.S., Forrest told the workers that 22 of the state’s 26 coal-powered plants could be converted to green hydrogen plants. Investing in Wine With the NBA’s Elite Players
It's reality check time and we are opening the holiday-shortened trading week in a bear market in the S&P 500 after U.S. stocks had their worst week last week since March of 2020. The Federal Reserve hiked the federal funds rate by three quarters of a percent last week as it tries to cool inflation. I know, I said that would be "out of character" and "off script" on last week's podcast . So, you know the situation is pretty serious, and the Federal Reserve does not have inflation under control. No central bank does, for that matter. It's going to take aggressive interest rate hikes to get to what the Fed calls a normal rate environment (3.4%), which means we may very well see another 75 basis point hike at the Fed's next meeting in July. While that 3.4% may be normal, if you look at the last 50 years, it is not normal when you look at the past decade, which has been characterized by accommodative monetary policy via low interest rates and low inflation well under 2%. This is new … [Read more...] about Investing in Wine With the NBA’s Elite Players
How To Know If Your Dumb Idea Will Change The World
In 2005, along with colleagues Steve Newman and Claudia Carpenter, Sam Schillace created a browser-based word processor called Writely. A Silicon Valley darling , it was eventually acquired by Google and became the basis for Google Docs. Now the SVP of engineering at Box , a cloud storage and file sharing service, Schillace says that despite today’s ubiquity of cloud-based computing, Writely was at first considered a bad idea and a waste of time. advertisement advertisement “What I’ve learned over time is that creative, interesting ideas almost always look stupid at first,” says Schillace. “It’s really hard once one of these things emerges to think about what the world was like before it emerged. Now it’s obvious, we’re in the world of the cloud, Box is a cloud collaboration company, this is valued, Google Docs is obviously a good idea and it’s hard to think about it not being a good idea.” At the time, though, the only real dynamic cloud-based … [Read more...] about How To Know If Your Dumb Idea Will Change The World
NBA Draft 2022: Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren Has Worked Out For Only The Orlando Magic And OKC Thunder
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Chet Holmgren has only worked out for two teams — the Orlando Magic and the Oklahoma City Thunder — ahead of Thursday’s NBA Draft, a league source said. The 7-foot, 195-pound Gonzaga freshman is widely projected to go No. 2 to the Thunder, with Auburn’s Jabari Smith expected to go No. 1 overall to the Magic. “I’ve had a few workouts with teams,” Holmgren said this week on a Zoom call. “I’m not going to disclose as far as who that is or what went down. I was well prepared for them after two months pre-draft training in California.” He added: “At the end of the day, it’s gonna be a complete blessing to have an NBA jersey and put that hat on draft night. No matter where it is, it’s not up to me at the end of the day. No matter where it is, I’m going to lace my shoes up and get to work as soon as I touch down in the city.” Holmgren, who averaged 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 3.7 blocks while shooting 41-of-105 … [Read more...] about NBA Draft 2022: Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren Has Worked Out For Only The Orlando Magic And OKC Thunder
