A simple 5-step system to ace performance reviews

March 27, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

My first-ever performance review was for a huge consulting firm. It felt like drinking water from a firehose: How could I condense everything I’d done and learned into a few paragraphs? I stayed up all night, hacking together a list. But when I was done, I realized I’d missed the mark. All I had created was a record of the activities I’d done. The “so what?” wasn’t there. It wasn’t an ideal way to kick off my career. So, I developed a system that helped me track and celebrate my milestones and prepare for my reviews—without subjecting myself to disgusting coffee and all-nighters. Here’s my system, and how you can adapt it for your performance reviews. Step 1: Identify your metrics A successful performance review connects your accomplishments to metrics that matter. So, how do you identify the most important metrics? Pull verbs from your job description When you boil down a job description down, the verbs are what matter. Those words—along with … [Read more...] about A simple 5-step system to ace performance reviews

Bank Optimism and Yellen’s Comments Lift Markets

March 21, 2023 by www.investopedia.com

Key Takeaways U.S. equities jumped, boosted by bank stocks and by comments from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that smaller banks that fail could get a government backstop for uninsured deposits. Moody’s raised the rating on Tesla’s ( TSLA ) debt from junk to investment grade, and that sent shares of the electric carmaker up almost 8%. Utility companies were among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500. Falling gold prices drove down shares of Newmont Corporation ( NEM ) and rival gold miners. U.S. equities jumped, boosted by bank stocks on reports of another industry effort to assist struggling First Republic Bank ( FRC ), and by comments from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that if needed, smaller banks that fail could get a government backstop for uninsured deposits. All that came a day before the Federal Reserve is set to announce whether it will continue raising interest rates to fight inflation, or hold off because of the turmoil in the banking sector. … [Read more...] about Bank Optimism and Yellen’s Comments Lift Markets

How machine learning is helping scientists forecast bird migration

March 24, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

With chatbots like ChatGPT making a splash , machine learning is playing an increasingly prominent role in our lives. For many of us, it’s been a mixed bag. We rejoice when our Spotify For You playlist finds us a new jam, but groan as we scroll through a slew of targeted ads on our Instagram feeds. Machine learning is also changing many fields that may seem surprising. One example is my discipline, ornithology—the study of birds . It isn’t just solving some of the biggest challenges associated with studying bird migration; more broadly, machine learning is expanding the ways in which people engage with birds. As spring migration picks up, here’s a look at how machine learning is influencing ways to research birds and, ultimately, to protect them. The challenge of conserving migratory birds Most birds in the Western Hemisphere migrate twice a year , flying over entire continents between their breeding and nonbreeding grounds. While these journeys are … [Read more...] about How machine learning is helping scientists forecast bird migration

China spent $240B bailing out ‘Belt and Road’ countries, study shows

March 28, 2023 by business.inquirer.net

JOHANNESBURG  -China spent $240 billion bailing out 22 developing countries between 2008 and 2021, with the amount soaring in recent years as more have struggled to repay loans spent building “Belt and Road” infrastructure, a study published on Tuesday showed. Almost 80 percent of the lending was made between 2016 and 2021, mainly to middle-income countries including Argentina, Mongolia and Pakistan, according to the report by researchers from the World Bank, Harvard Kennedy School, AidData and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. China has lent hundreds of billions of dollars to build infrastructure in developing countries, but lending has tailed off since 2016 as many projects have failed to pay the expected financial dividends. “Beijing is ultimately trying to rescue its own banks. That’s why it has gotten into the risky business of international bailout lending,” said Carmen Reinhart, a former World Bank chief economist and one of the study’s authors. Jennifer Aniston: Netflix ‘Friends’ deal a testament to show’s value

December 8, 2018 by entertainment.inquirer.net

Jennifer Aniston attends the world premiere of “Dumplin'” at TCL Chinese Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, in Los Angeles. Image: Richard Shotwell/Invision/AP LOS ANGELES — Jennifer Aniston calls it “amazing” that “Friends” still has an audience big enough to prompt multi-million dollar business deals to keep it from disappearing on Netflix. “I find it amazing that it’s continued to have such love and such an audience and such an appetite for it,” Aniston told The Associated Press Thursday at the premiere of her Netflix film “Dumplin”. After an outcry from fans, Netflix announced earlier in the week that it was keeping the adventures of Ross, Rachel, Phoebe and Joey available to subscribers through 2019 — at a reported $100 million (around P5.2 billion) price tag to the streaming service. READ: ‘Friends’ staying on Netflix through 2019 “I think it says a lot about the show. Especially since it takes place at a time where it’s so different from now. ‘Friends’ staying on Netflix through 2019

December 4, 2018 by entertainment.inquirer.net

Friends. Image: Warner Bros. TV via AFP Relaxnews Enormously popular 1990s and 2000s sitcom “Friends” is to remain available on streaming service Netflix until 2020, after which point it may well end up on WarnerMedia’s upcoming platform. Airing from 1994 to 2004 on NBC, Netflix had acquired “Friends” as the result of an online streaming deal that began January 1, 2015. Fans had been preparing to lose all ten seasons when, over the weekend, the Netflix page for “Friends” began warning users that the show would disappear from Jan. 1, 2019. That’s no longer the case, if it ever was, with Netflix confirming via Twitter that “‘Friends’ will still be there for you in the U.S. throughout 2019.” The Holiday Armadillo has granted your wish: “Friends” will still be there for you in the US throughout 2019 pic.twitter.com/Yd0VqRzk3r — Netflix US (@netflix) December 3, 2018 International branches of the streaming giant echoed the sentiment.
