Sadly, we are seeing exaggerations and economy with the truth in the reports on the ongoing war in Ukraine. (Illustration by Suneesh K.) Cataclysmic global events have a long history of bringing out the best and the worst of news reporting. It isn’t any different today in the midst of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia . Much of the reporting has been brave and moving. Sadly, there’s also been news bordering on downright fabrication . Little, it would seem, has changed since the Great Moon Hoax of August 1835 when the New York-based paper The Sun carried a series of six reports about how English astronomer Sir John Herschel, using the biggest telescope ever built, had established that there was an alien civilization on the moon. The Sun claimed that Herschel had sighted vegetation, “brown quadrupeds”, and “large winged creatures, wholly unlike any kind of birds.” The writer of the story later claimed that it was meant to be satirical but by then enough Americans had bought … [Read more...] about Russia Ukraine conflict: The fine line between misreporting and propaganda about Ukraine

EU leaders tackle inflation, energy shocks from Russia’s war
(Representative image: Reuters) A day after endorsing Ukraine's candidacy to join the European Union, the bloc's leaders turned their attention to the severe economic turbulence looming over the coming months as the full impact of Russia's war sinks in and the threat of recession rises. The EU's 27 leaders gathered in Brussels to grapple with surging inflation, energy shocks, dwindling business and consumer confidence, and growing budget pressures. The leaders also will have to contend with higher borrowing costs as the European Central Bank prepares to raise interest rates for the first time in 11 years to counter runaway price increases. ECB President, Christine Lagarde, who plans to raise rates next month and again in September, joined the EU summit to discuss the darkening economic outlook. Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said, "We are in a difficult situation, its very important that we have this discussion." The EU has spent the previous decade battling … [Read more...] about EU leaders tackle inflation, energy shocks from Russia’s war
India engaged on issue of facilitating payments with Russia: Deputy Governor Michael Patra

Photographer: Andrey Rudakov/Bloomberg India's government is engaged on the issue of facilitating payments with Russia, and the Reserve Bank of India will do whatever the government decides, Deputy Governor Michael Patra said June 24. He did not offer any other details. The Deputy Governor's statements assume significance as the government had remained tight-lipped on the issue even as multiple meetings between banking representatives of both nations had taken place. Ever since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent barrage of sanctions on Moscow by the West, trade between India and Russia has depended on routing transactions through smaller Russian banks which are as yet untouched by sanctions. Both nations had initially focused on establishing a barter mechanism involving a set of commodities. A key part of this would be an agreement … [Read more...] about India engaged on issue of facilitating payments with Russia: Deputy Governor Michael Patra
Ukraine’s Zelenskiy appeals to Glastonbury crowd for support
GLASTONBURY, England (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appealed via videolink on Friday to crowds at Britain's Glastonbury Festival for support, urging them to spread the truth about Russia's invasion and to pressure politicians to help restore peace. Zelenskiy, wearing his trademark military fatigues, drew cheers after delivering his pre-recorded message from two large screens at the music festival's Other stage before rock band the Libertines played. "Russia has stolen our peace," he told the crowds at Glastonbury, the world's largest green field festival. "Glastonbury is the greatest concentration of freedom these days and I ask you to share this feeling with everyone whose freedom is under attack," said Zelenskiy, speaking English. "The more people join us in defending freedom and truth, the sooner Russia's war against Ukraine will end," he added. "Prove that freedom always wins." Zelenskiy, who has built a close working relationship with British … [Read more...] about Ukraine’s Zelenskiy appeals to Glastonbury crowd for support
Ukraine loses key district south of Lysychansk to Russian forces

(Photo: Sergey Bobok/ AFP) KYIV: A district south of the city of Lysychansk in Ukraine's eastern Luhansk region was "fully occupied" by Russian forces as of Friday morning, a local Ukrainian official said on television. "Unfortunately, as of today... the entire Hirske district is occupied," Hirske's municipal head Oleksiy Babchenko said on a television broadcast. "There are some insignificant, local battles going on at the outskirts, but the enemy has entered." The loss of Hirske and several other settlements around it leaves Lysychansk, the last major Ukrainian-controlled city in Luhansk, in danger of being enveloped from three sides by advancing Russian forces. Russia's defence ministry said on Friday it had encircled about 2,000 Ukrainian troops, including 80 foreign … [Read more...] about Ukraine loses key district south of Lysychansk to Russian forces
Global M&A braces for dry spell as boardrooms put expansion on hold
- A + A LONDON/NEW YORK (June 24): Global dealmaking is entering an arid season as raging inflation and a stock market rout curb the appetite of many corporate boards to expand through acquisitions. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February and fears that an economic recession is looming dealt a blow to merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in the second quarter. The value of announced deals dropped 25.5% year-on-year to US$1 trillion, according to Dealogic data. "Companies are standing back from M&A in the short term as they are more focused on the impact of a recession on their business. The timing for dealmaking will come but I don't think it's quite there yet," said Alison Harding-Jones, Citigroup Inc's EMEA M&A head. M&A activity in the United States plunged 40% to US$456 billion in the second quarter, while Asia Pacific was down 10%, Dealogic data showed. Europe was the only region where dealmaking didn't crash. Activity was up 6.5% in the … [Read more...] about Global M&A braces for dry spell as boardrooms put expansion on hold
Dr Copper’s falling prices indicate more ailments on the cards for global economy
Copper or Doctor Copper as market analysts refer to it due to its reputation of having a “Ph.D. in economics” because of its ability to predict the direction of global economy, has tumbled significantly in the recent past and is currently trading at its 15-month low on the London Metals Exchange (LME). The past trends of copper prices and global economic growth have signified that both the copper prices and global economy move in tandem and one can predict the turning points in global economy based on the direction of global copper prices. Experts are of the opinion that the correlation between copper prices and global economic health does largely hold good, though, at times there might be some brief aberrations. “Aberrations may occur due to governments’ interventions in the form of fiscal stimulus, or the major central bankers’ trying to respond to the changing macro-economic conditions by the way of change in their monetary policies”, said Praveen Singh, AVP, Fundamental … [Read more...] about Dr Copper’s falling prices indicate more ailments on the cards for global economy
