Parliament tonight voted in favour of building a third runway at Heathrow Airport in a historic decision taken after decades of delays. The bill passed the House of Commons with a large majority of 296, according to the BBC, as MPs from both Labour and the Conservatives defied their leaderships in large numbers. 415 voted in favour, compared to only 119 against. The vote paves the way for the controversial third runway, although the start of work may be delayed further by legal challenges from environmental groups and local residents. The UK’s largest business groups have generally been in favour of the new runway. The Heathrow vote split both major parties. Multiple Conservative party MPs rebelled. Greg Hands voted against the third runway, defying the government whip after last week resigning as a minister. Meanwhile, foreign secretary Boris Johnson was absent from the vote. Johnson, the MP for Uxbridge in west London, had previously vowed he will lie down in front of … [Read more...] about Parliament backs third runway at Heathrow

The boss of London Luton Airport on Monday claimed a third runway at Heathrow is not enough to solve the capital’s capacity problems. Nick Barton was speaking as he revealed a record May at his airport, and a week after the Government gave the green light for expansion at Heathrow. He thinks better rail services should also be looked at “to help ease the UK’s capacity crunch”, and added: “Regional airports need to be able to meet their full potential, and improved rail links are essential to achieving that.” Barton said Luton is the capital’s only nearby airport without an express-style rail service from central London. He wants to use the upcoming East Midlands rail refranchising process to address that, and is calling for at least four fast trains per hour to serve his airport. Luton recorded its busiest-ever May with 1.49 million passengers, up 3.6% from a year earlier. The most popular destinations were Amsterdam, Bucharest and … [Read more...] about Luton airport boss: Third runway at Heathrow won’t solve London’s woes
Does the UK economy need a third runway at Heathrow? James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East England Chamber of Commerce, says YES. The cabinet backed Heathrow’s North West runway plan for the same reason the independent Airports Commission recommended it in 2016: Heathrow is the UK’s only hub airport. The Commission came to that conclusion after four years of rigorous analysis, and after reviewing over 50 alternatives to the Heathrow scheme. North-east businesses need access to an expanded Heathrow which, as a global gateway, can support our national aviation network and provide flights no other airport can. Heathrow flies to over 130 international markets, enabling exporters of all sizes from Newcastle to Newquay to trade with the world, and brings in foreign investment to every corner of the country. But it is desperately full. Key trading routes are at capacity, while competitors in Europe and the Middle East are expanding their hubs to win new routes to … [Read more...] about DEBATE: Does the UK economy need a third runway at Heathrow?
source REUTERS/Hannah McKay LONDON – The government has approved controversial plans for a third runway at Heathrow. The government’s economic sub-committee, chaired by Prime Minister Theresa May, presented the plans to her Cabinet, which approved them in full. Transport secretary Chris Grayling told MPs on Tuesday that “the time for action is now” and described it as a “historic moment,” adding that the expansion was still “a number of years away.” He said that residents affected by noise and construction would receive a total of £2.6 billion compensation and said the plans would only proceed if they complied with air quality obligations. MPs will vote on the expansion plans in the next several weeks. The debate over the merits of expanding Heathrow has raged for over two decades. The last Labour government backed the idea – and won a Commons vote on the issue – but it was mothballed by the … [Read more...] about Breaking: Government approves third runway at Heathrow
