Willis Reed, Hall Of Fame Knick And Team Captain Who Led Franchise To Its Only Two Titles, Dies At 80
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The original Captain — Willis Reed, not Derek Jeter — will always be remembered for his iconic Madison Square Garden entrance. The hobbled walk. Marv Albert’s signature radio announcement, “Here comes Willis, and the crowd is going wild.” The grainy video showing a delirious, sold-out World’s Most Famous Arena. Reed, the Hall of Fame New York Knicks player who died Tuesday at age 80, only scored four points in that decisive Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals against Wilt Chamberlain and the Lakers, as the Knicks went on to win the game and celebrate their first title. But Reed’s legend was forever solidified in New York sports history after his inspiring performance on basically one leg, an athletic feat that ranks alongside Joe Namath’s famous guarantee a year earlier, in January 1969, when the Jets quarterback correctly predicted his team would topple the favored Baltimore Colts in the Super Bowl. Reed would later help … [Read more...] about Willis Reed, Hall Of Fame Knick And Team Captain Who Led Franchise To Its Only Two Titles, Dies At 80
How simple sound and light are treating Alzheimer’s Disease
In 1906, a German psychiatrist and neuroanatomist performed an autopsy on the brain of a patient who displayed abnormal symptoms while alive. Over the course of several years, this woman’s behavior, as well as her speech and language, became erratic. She forgot who people were, became paranoid, and, as her condition worsened, suffered total memory loss. When her doctor dissected her brain, he found unusual plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in her cerebral cortex. He quickly alerted his colleagues of this “peculiar severe disease.” The doctor was Alois Alzheimer. More than a century later, the medical community is still trying to understand Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a neurodegenerative brain disorder. But early studies have demonstrated that we may be able to mitigate some of the damage created by AD simply by exposing people to certain waves of sound and light. This research is part of the growing discipline of neuroaesthetics, or the study of how the arts and … [Read more...] about How simple sound and light are treating Alzheimer’s Disease
US banks face scrutiny as Fed rate decision looms
A scramble by troubled U.S. lender First Republic Bank to secure a capital infusion kept worries about the broader banking sector alive on Wednesday as authorities considered steps to further strengthen financial stability. While recent market turmoil has eased, the Federal Reserve’s meeting later in the day is now a major focus for investors, with traders split over whether the U.S. central bank will be forced to pause its hiking cycle to ensure financial stability. The Fed’s relentless rate hikes to rein in inflation have been partly blamed for sparking the biggest meltdown in the banking sector since the 2008 financial crisis. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, which sank under the weight of bond-related losses due to surging interest rates, kicked off a tumultuous 10 days for banks which culminated, for now, in the 3 billion Swiss franc ($3.2 billion) Swiss regulator-engineered takeover of Credit Suisse by rival UBS on Sunday. The wipeout of Credit Suisse’s Additional … [Read more...] about US banks face scrutiny as Fed rate decision looms
First Republic slumps after report of potential government backing in deal
A First Republic Bank branch is pictured in Midtown Manhattan in New York City, New York, U.S., March 13, 2023. REUTERS/Mike Segar/File photo Shares of First Republic Bank tumbled 14 percent in extended trade on Tuesday following a report that a potential deal for the troubled bank could rely on government backing to encourage buyers. The steep drop partially reversed the nearly 30 percent rally in the stock during regular trade. The government could play a role in taking out assets that have eroded First Republic’s balance sheet, Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of discussions between Wall Street CEOs and U.S. officials. In addition, First Republic has tapped investment bank Lazard Ltd to help it explore strategic options, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. First Republic declined to comment about the reports by Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal. Potential government backing in a deal to save First National could … [Read more...] about First Republic slumps after report of potential government backing in deal
Tencent Provides Promising Outlook As Investors Wait For Jay Powell
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Tencent Q4 Earnings Overview Tencent reported Q4 financial results after the Hong Kong close and before the US open overnight. Goldilocks would say that the results were "not too hot and not too cold." Ultimately, advertising revenue increased +15% year-over-year (YoY) in Q4 year over year compared to a -7% decrease in 2022 from 2021. We knew that Q4 was not going to be good as COVID spread across China following the elimination of the zero COVID policy. Markets are forward-looking, so the pickup in Q4 likely means another pickup in Q1, Q2, etc. In fact, during the conference call, the company said that January and February were showing “positive signs” of a sustained recovery. Tencent’s main performance drivers are video games and its WeChat social media platform, which is up to 1.3 billion users globally. While international games saw gains, domestic games were off. Management slashed sales and marketing expenses by -47% YoY in … [Read more...] about Tencent Provides Promising Outlook As Investors Wait For Jay Powell
Want To Decrease The Gender Pay Gap? Use Facts, Not Feelings
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I had the honor of attending the Forbes Equal Pay Forum a few days ago where the main topic of conversation was—you guessed it—the gender pay gap. Women are still earning 82% of what men do , up from 80% in 2002 . Although many ideas emerged during the forum, the discussion centered on how to systemically narrow or eliminate this gap. These changes take time, evidenced by the mere 2% increase over the past two decades. So, until companies begin to implement real strategic initiatives to combat this gap, women must take matters into their own hands and demand a pay increase. Many factors contribute to the gender pay gap: pure discrimination which excludes women from higher paying occupations, or socialization, which makes us more likely to seek these jobs; women do more part-time work which pays less; and more women fall into the “agreeable” personality type , which earns $11,300 less than their more confident … [Read more...] about Want To Decrease The Gender Pay Gap? It’s Time To Give NBA Franchises Some Breathing Room
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Denver Nuggets caught a lot of flack for losing four straight games to mediocre opponents a few weeks ago, with the discussion inevitably getting intertwined with the MVP candidacy of Nikola Jokić. What seems to be forgotten, however, was the fact that the Nuggets were just coming off eight wins in nine games, as well as the fact that the team isn't exactly in dire need of going all-out this late in the season. In fact, championship contenders - an umbrella the Nuggets fall in under - need to at some point cut corners for the sake of durability. The NBA Playoffs aren't over in mere days. It's a two-month competitive extravaganza where players often shut off communication with much of the outside world, and are rarely available for anything but traveling, practices, games, and mandatory media sessions. Asking teams - especially those that are locks to get into the postseason - to go hard in the late stages of the … [Read more...] about It’s Time To Give NBA Franchises Some Breathing Room
