Key Facts That belt of sargassum, which is estimated to weigh more than six million tons, doubled in size from December to January, Florida Atlantic University oceanographer Brian Lapointe told CNN , and is expected to hit Florida and the Caribbean earlier this year than expected, with algae already spotted within a mile of Martinique and Key Largo, Florida.
