Retail’s Worry: As Philippines Trade Ramps Up – Will Bongbong Marcos Question America’s Love?

May 15, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin More than eighty percent of eligible voters turned out for the Philippines Presidential Election, and it looks a landslide victory for Ferdinand (Bongbong) Marcos Jr. While they are finishing the vote count, several media critics are already trying to punch holes in Bongbong’s stunning landslide victory. Some have pointed to the excesses of his father’s regime (of 36 years ago), while others have targeted his 92-year-old mother (Imelda). Some allege a closer friendship to China, but few have spent time examining the erosion of Philippine love for America – an important analysis for a former USA colony - where the average citizens really do love America. In bygone days, Capitol Hill pushed for closer ties with Manila but, sadly, the former pro-Philippine hawks have long since vacated the building. With Bongbong now on the rise, the U.S. Government is taking a fresh look at ways to improve the relationship. As everyone … [Read more...] about Retail’s Worry: As Philippines Trade Ramps Up – Will Bongbong Marcos Question America’s Love?

One Of The Azores’ Best Boutique Hotels, White, Gets A Makeover

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The first time I went to Portugal’s Azores islands to check out the White hotel, shortly after it opened nearly five years ago, the owners, João and Catarina Reis, told me they had taken their inspiration from a particular hotel in Santorini—all whitewashed floors, driftwood and macrame. “It’s white,” added João at the time, “so there will be no colors to distract you” from the blues and greens of the ocean and the hills of São Miguel, one of the most spectacular islands in the world . It was all quite lovely, and done well enough to inspire many of the design-forward boutique hotels that followed in the Azores—along with the Reis’s other hotel, Santa Bárbara , it was a pioneer in luxury travel in the archipelago—but truth be told, it felt a little out of place. I like Santorini style, but this is a very different island. The Reises recognized that too, and so this winter, they closed the ten-room, clifftop hotel … [Read more...] about One Of The Azores’ Best Boutique Hotels, White, Gets A Makeover

Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt

May 16, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 16): As spiraling inflation spreads across the globe, emerging-market bonds from Turkey to Thailand are feeling the brunt. Local-currency debt from developing nations -- which is far more sensitive to a country’s domestic inflationary pressures than dollar denominated equivalents — has slumped almost 9% this year, the most since at least 2008, according to a Bloomberg index. There’s unlikely to be any relief soon as central bankers around the world attempt to control surging prices by raising interest rates even more aggressively — potentially risking growth in doing so. That certainly wasn’t the plan. Many developing economies led the charge in rate hikes last year, getting ahead of policy makers in the US and hoping to avoid a redux of the 2013 taper tantrum. But with inflation raging in the US and the strong dollar pressuring currencies elsewhere, these countries are now making a new rulebook. Policy makers across emerging nations are either … [Read more...] about Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt

Wheat prices jump as India export ban adds to supply squeeze

May 16, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A PARIS/MANILA (May 16): International wheat prices jumped on Monday as an export ban by India, the latest country to use trade curbs to counter food inflation, threatened to further squeeze world wheat supply strained by the war in Ukraine. US and European wheat futures climbed by nearly 6%, with the Chicago market — the global benchmark — earlier reaching its daily trading limit and Paris prices approaching all-time highs. By end of its overnight trading session, Chicago futures were up 4.9%, off an earlier two-month peak. Wheat has contributed to record highs this year for global food prices as measured by the UN's food agency, with Russia's invasion of Ukraine upending the market by halting massive shipments from Ukrainian sea ports. India's embargo, prompted by a heatwave that has cut harvest prospects and sent domestic prices soaring, marks a policy U-turn after the government maintained just days earlier that it was still targeting record exports of … [Read more...] about Wheat prices jump as India export ban adds to supply squeeze

In a post-‘Roe’ world, abortion pills won’t be enough

May 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Christie Pitney is a certified nurse midwife who was working at a federally funded health center in California’s Central Valley when the pandemic struck. In those early months, several of her patients struggled to get abortions. Under normal circumstances, the closest abortion clinic is 45 minutes away, but during the pandemic, clinics around the country suffered staff shortages and canceled services. Patients were having trouble getting to clinics even when they were open. advertisement advertisement This is part of a series of articles on the business case for abortion access. See the full package here. “My patients and the population in that area, they don’t have reliable transportation. They are working six to seven days a week,” she says. “They have childcare needs and don’t have reliable income. Most of them are either working in a packing house or in the fields.” And that’s in California, one of the most accessible states to get an … [Read more...] about In a post-‘Roe’ world, abortion pills won’t be enough

Gov’t think tank warns against oil deregulation backslide

May 10, 2022 by business.inquirer.net

Calls for the revival of the price stabilization fund for oil have resurfaced in recent months as the successive and hefty fuel price hikes have put a dent in the budget of Filipino consumers, but a government think thank is urging policymakers to stay the course of reforms set in place in the late 1990s. A study released by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), however, said reinstating the Oil Price Stabilization Fund (OPSF) is not the solution to fuel price woes. During the campaign period, presidential candidates Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Manny Pacquiao proposed reinstating the OPSF should they win in this year’s election to shield the country from the impact of rising fuel costs, mainly driven by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Philippines is a net oil importer. Hence, global developments have a significant impact on pump prices locally. Adoracion Navarro, senior research fellow at the PIDS, said such a move would spell a reversal of the downstream oil … [Read more...] about Gov’t think tank warns against oil deregulation backslide
