Golden arches to go dark in Russia as McDonald’s exits after 30 years
- A + A BENGALURU (May 16): McDonald's Corp on Monday became one of the biggest global brands to exit Russia, laying out plans to sell all its restaurants after operating in the country for more than 30 years, following the invasion of Ukraine. The world's largest burger chain, which owns about 84% of its nearly 850 restaurants in Russia, will take a related non-cash charge of up to US$1.4 billion following its sale. McDonald's had in March decided to close its restaurants in the country, including the iconic Pushkin Square location in central Moscow — a symbol of flourishing American capitalism in the dying embers of the Soviet Union. The burger chain represented the thawing of Cold War tensions and became a way to sample Western food and spirit for millions of people, even though the cost of a burger was several times bigger than the daily budgets of many city dwellers. "Some might argue that providing access to food and continuing to employ tens of thousands … [Read more...] about Golden arches to go dark in Russia as McDonald’s exits after 30 years

Ice Seguerra brought his wife Liza Diño to Sagada, a place he considers his “sanctuary,” to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary. The couple arrived in the picturesque town last Wednesday, Jan. 8, as per Diño’s Instagram page on the same day. She accompanied her post with photos of them striking wacky poses while clad in black hoodies. Diño noted that it was her first time to visit Sagada, which she said is Seguerra’s favorite place. According to her, Seguerra would travel to the said town every year since 2001 because he considered it his “sanctuary.” “Kaso no’ng time na yun… iba ang kasama [niya],” Diño jested. Brazil supreme court sides with Netflix over gay Jesus comedy
BRASÍLIA, Brazil — Brazil’s highest court on Thursday rejected a lower court’s decision to remove from Netflix a comedy depicting Jesus Christ in a gay relationship. The head of the Supreme Federal Court, Judge Antonio Dias Toffoli, sided with the streaming platform’s appeal against a temporary injunction banning the movie. It denied the idea that the movie was insulting to Christians. “One cannot suppose that a humorous satire has the ability to weaken the values of the Christian faith, whose existence is traced back more than two thousand years, and which is the belief of the majority of Brazlian citizens,” the judge said. The film, entitled “The First Temptation of Christ”, by the Brazilian production company Porta dos Fundos, came out on December 3 and drew strong criticism from conservative politicians in the mainly Catholic country, from the church itself and from evangelicals. It depicts Jesus returning home with his boyfriend Orlando after 40 days in the desert, as … [Read more...] about Brazil supreme court sides with Netflix over gay Jesus comedy

Sylviana Hamdani (The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Tue, May 17 2022 Those who grew up in Indonesia in the 1980s would likely be familiar with some of the era’s most iconic songs, such as “Lestari Alamku” (Sustainable Nature, 1982), “Sekar Mayang” (1984), “Apel” (Dating, 1987), as well as the thin, long-haired and thickly mustachioed man who sang them with his throaty voice while belting the tunes on his guitar. Gombloh (1948-1988) is a legendary figure in Indonesia’s music industry. The singer and songwriter, whose given name was Soedjarwoto, lived a short, yet memorable life (he died at 39 years of age). His songs, which are still on heavy rotation, express his ideals and patriotism.
