Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis purged Tampa’s elected prosecutor, Andrew Warren. Warren had pledged not to prosecute people who seek and provide abortions. Warren had not actually had any such cases before him. DeSantis is, of course, vying for the Republican nomination for President in 2024. DeSantis has been taking shrill steps – Warren called this a “political stunt” - to woo the future primary voters, and to fundraise from those well off, with Trump views. Still, there is a real clash here. There are many blue enclaves in red states, like the Democratic cities in Republican Texas. Since the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade there will be a new world of potential for prosecuting women or doctors or their helpers, even out-of-state helpers or organizations, for any part in abortions. It is entirely possible this is the first of many clashes between red state Governors and State Legislatures and … [Read more...] about DeSantis May Lose Suit By Tampa Prosecutor He Fired For Pro-Choice Stance

EU regulator begins review of Pfizer-BioNTech’s variant-adapted Covid-19 shot
- A + A LONDON (Aug 9): The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has started a rolling review of a variant-adapted Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, it said on Tuesday. The so-called bivalent vaccine targets two strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus behind Covid-19 — the original strain first identified in China, and the Omicron offshoots BA.4/5 that are currently behind most cases in Europe. A rolling review means the EMA assesses the data as it becomes available, and the process continues until there is enough data for a formal marketing application. Last month, the EMA said it had begun a rolling review of another version of the companies' shot which targets the original SARS-CoV-2 strain and Omicron subvariant BA.1. While existing coronavirus vaccines continue to provide good protection against hospitalisation and death, vaccine effectiveness has taken a hit as the virus has evolved. European Union officials plan to use bivalent shots in their autumn … [Read more...] about EU regulator begins review of Pfizer-BioNTech’s variant-adapted Covid-19 shot
Suspense over Jardine’s third attempt at CCB privatisation
This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on August 1, 2022 - August 07, 2022. - A + A WILL it be third time’s the charm for Jardine Cycle & Carriage Ltd, which launched yet another unconditional takeover offer for Cycle & Carriage Bintang Bhd (CCB) on July 14? Jardine’s bid to acquire the rest of the shares in CCB that it does not already own — at an offer price of RM2.70 per share — marks its third attempt at making CCB a fully owned subsidiary. As with the first two exercises, the current offer is expected to fall short, because even though it is higher than the previous offers of RM2.20 per share followed by another at RM2.40, it is still far from the RM4.65 enterprise value (EV) that the main dissenting shareholder Datuk David Goh contends it is worth. In an exclusive interview with The Edge in July last year, Goh said that the underlying value of CCB — one of the largest Mercedes-Benz dealerships in the country — was at … [Read more...] about Suspense over Jardine’s third attempt at CCB privatisation

Supporters await a convoy carrying US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi outside the Grand Hyatt hotel in Taipei, Taiwan, on Tuesday, Aug 2, 2022. US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Aug 2 evening, in defiance of Chinese threats, a trip that would make her the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years. - A + A (Aug 9): House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s swing through Asia aimed to convey the US’s “strong and unshakable” support for the region. It ended up leaving many countries in stunned silence, as China conducted unprecedented military drills around Taiwan. The shockwaves from the highest-level US visit to Taiwan in a quarter century are still reverberating around the region days after she flew back to Washington. China’s military has extended exercises designed to show an ability to encircle the island and cut off the Taiwan Strait, one of the world’s busiest trade routes, days after launching missiles that likely flew over Taipei … [Read more...] about Pelosi trip hinders Biden effort to galvanize Asia against China
Norwegian bitcoin miner heads north to escape record power bills
- A + A OSLO/STOCKHOLM (Aug 9): Soaring power prices are forcing a bitcoin miner and data centre operator in southern Norway to head north. Kryptovault AS is moving operations north of the Arctic Circle, where electricity is much cheaper, chief executive officer Kjetil Hove Pettersen said. Staying put would mean doubling a power bill that last year hit 202 million kroner (RM92.7 million) and typically makes up more than 80% of the company's operating expenses, he said. The energy crisis gripping Europe has been exacerbated in southern Norway as a dry spring depleted many giant reservoirs that are vital for local power generation. But it is a different story in the country's north, where there is ample water and it is hard to send flows to other regions. Prices in the most northern price zone where Krytovault will set up shop are a small fraction of those in the south. "The relocation project will of course add other expenses and complications, however, with … [Read more...] about Norwegian bitcoin miner heads north to escape record power bills
Pelosi says Xi reacted to her Taiwan visit ‘like a scared bully’
Nancy Pelosi - A + A WASHINGTON (Aug 9): US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said members of Congress will not be intimidated by China's reaction to her visit to Taiwan and that Chinese President Xi Jinping was acting "like a scared bully". Just because Xi "has his own insecurities, [it] doesn't mean that I am going to have him do my schedule for members of Congress", Pelosi said on Tuesday on NBC's Today show. In a separate appearance on MSNBC's Morning Joe programme, Pelosi said China cannot control the schedules of members of Congress, and, "we're not going to be accomplices to his isolation of Taiwan". "I think he's in a fragile place," Pelosi said, referring to China's economy. "He's acting like a scared bully." Pelosi's stop in Taiwan last week while in the Asia-Pacific region drew a strong response from China, which conducted military exercises designed to demonstrate its ability to encircle the island and launched missiles that … [Read more...] about Pelosi says Xi reacted to her Taiwan visit ‘like a scared bully’
Opinion: What happens next to Brittney Griner is beyond our control

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) Nobody trusts my ability to forecast the future, least of all me. Nevertheless, I feel fairly safe in predicting that WNBA star Brittney Griner will not serve all nine years of her sentence by a Russian court for drug possession and smuggling. Gene Seymour It's not that much of a stretch to imagine this coming true, especially when recapping the basis for that charge: two vape cartridges of hashish oil found in Griner's luggage at a Moscow airport in February. Nine years? For two cartridges? The maximum sentence is 10 years , and at least Griner didn't get that. Those with long enough memories can't help but think of the incredulous … [Read more...] about Opinion: What happens next to Brittney Griner is beyond our control

(CNN) Data obtained by CNN from New York's largest health-care provider indicates you're very unlikely to become severely ill with Covid-19 if you're under age 60, up to date on your Covid-19 vaccines and don't have underlying health problems, backing up a government plan expected to be announced this week that will ease up on coronavirus restrictions . Biden administration to move forward with plan to stretch monkeypox vaccine doses
(CNN) The Biden administration is preparing to move forward with a plan to stretch the limited supply of monkeypox vaccine doses that would allow providers to use one-fifth as much per shot, two people familiar with the plans said. The Biden administration is set to announce a new emergency declaration as early as Tuesday afternoon that would enable providers to inject one-fifth of the currently authorized dose into the skin, rather than a full dose into underlying fat. The move was first reported by the New York Times. Change in monkeypox vaccine injection method could mean more doses but may not be easy, experts say The move comes less than a week after the Biden administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency, which gives the US Food and Drug Administration and other government health agencies more flexibility to fight the spread of the virus. FDA Commissioner Dr. Robert Califf said last week the FDA was considering a … [Read more...] about Biden administration to move forward with plan to stretch monkeypox vaccine doses
