SIREN… UNPRECEDENTED SUPREME COURT LEAK SIGNALS END OF ROE… POLITICO: Supreme Court has voted to overturn abortion rights, draft opinion shows The Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito circulated inside the court and obtained by POLITICO. The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes. “We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled,” he writes in the document, labeled as the “Opinion of the Court.” “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.” […] The document, labeled as a first draft of the majority opinion, includes a notation that it was … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Unprecedented Supreme Court Leak Signals End Of Roe V. Roe May Be Gone, But Red States Still Face Major Roadblocks On Abortion Bans
Republican-led states are contending with challenges to their laws restricting abortion, despite the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade with June’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision. Government officials and activists have attacked pro-life legislation in Louisiana, Kentucky, Idaho, Kansas and elsewhere, according to the Associated Press . Such laws have faced court challenges to their active status as judges weigh their constitutionality. Voters in Kansas rejected a proposed state constitutional amendment on Tuesday that would have declared abortion was not a right according to the state’s constitution. The measure also sought to deny state constitutional protection of government abortion funding. (RELATED: EURO HYPOCRISY: Leaders Condemn Roe Reversal But Have Stricter Abortion Laws Themselves) The Justice Department (DOJ) sued Idaho Tuesday over a state measure scheduled to be effective Aug. 25, arguing it violates the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor … [Read more...] about Roe May Be Gone, But Red States Still Face Major Roadblocks On Abortion Bans
DeSantis May Lose Suit By Tampa Prosecutor He Fired For Pro-Choice Stance
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis purged Tampa’s elected prosecutor, Andrew Warren. Warren had pledged not to prosecute people who seek and provide abortions. Warren had not actually had any such cases before him. DeSantis is, of course, vying for the Republican nomination for President in 2024. DeSantis has been taking shrill steps – Warren called this a “political stunt” - to woo the future primary voters, and to fundraise from those well off, with Trump views. Still, there is a real clash here. There are many blue enclaves in red states, like the Democratic cities in Republican Texas. Since the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade there will be a new world of potential for prosecuting women or doctors or their helpers, even out-of-state helpers or organizations, for any part in abortions. It is entirely possible this is the first of many clashes between red state Governors and State Legislatures and … [Read more...] about DeSantis May Lose Suit By Tampa Prosecutor He Fired For Pro-Choice Stance
Biden Will Issue Second Executive Order To Protect Abortion Rights
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline President Joe Biden on Wednesday outlined an executive order to protect access to abortions—his second such order since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade—in a move that primarily seeks to protect and assist women seeking abortions across state borders. Key Facts According to the White House, a key provision of the order will direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ensure that Medicaid can be tapped to fund abortions for women who are forced to travel out of state to access them. States where abortions remain legal will be able to request Medicaid waivers from the HHS to cover the costs of providing services to out-of-state women, ABC News reported , citing an unnamed Biden administration official. The HHS will also be ordered to engage with health care providers to help clarify their obligations in light of the Supreme Court ruling on abortions and ensure that they … [Read more...] about Biden Will Issue Second Executive Order To Protect Abortion Rights
New Research Says Abortion Motivates Voters Suggesting Kansas Election May Foreshadow Midterm Results
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Voters in Kansas decided to uphold a state constitutional right to abortion in a landslide defeat of an amendment that would repeal the protection. It marked the first statewide vote on abortion access following the Supreme Court ruling, which overturned Roe v. Wade . As several states are already set to have abortion-related questions on ballots later this year, the election was one to watch for gauging how abortion rights resonate at the polls. New research indicates that Kansas may not be alone in seeing abortion as a vote-moving issue. The Kaiser Family Foundation has been monitoring voter interest in abortion access since February as a part of the organization’s health tracking poll. Now, following the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization , 55% of those surveyed say access to abortion is “very important” to their vote in November’s midterm elections, up nine percentage points … [Read more...] about New Research Says Abortion Motivates Voters Suggesting Kansas Election May Foreshadow Midterm Results
Nebraska Lawmakers Aren’t Willing To Pass An Abortion Ban, Governor Says
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) will not call a special session of the state legislature to pass a 12-week abortion ban because there aren’t enough state senators who would vote for the bill, the governor said Monday, the latest instance of new abortion restrictions facing hurdles in even Republican-controlled states in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Key Facts Thirty state senators in Nebraska are in favor of amending state law to ban abortion starting at 12 weeks into a pregnancy, Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers told Ricketts in a letter on Monday. That falls short of the 33 votes needed to overcome a filibuster and pass the bill, Ricketts said, calling the lack of support “deeply saddening” in a statement. The lack of a special session means abortion will remain legal in Nebraska for up to 20 weeks into a pregnancy, at least for now. Two Republicans … [Read more...] about Nebraska Lawmakers Aren’t Willing To Pass An Abortion Ban, Governor Says
Abortion Will Remain Legal In Kansas As Ballot Measure To Amend Constitution Fails
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Kansas voters have decided to preserve abortion access in the state, voting down a ballot measure that would paved the way for new restrictions—the first major test of Americans’ views on abortion rights in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade and a sign of how unpopular abortion bans may be, even in predominantly Republican states. Key Facts The Associated Press projected the “Value Them Both” ballot measure did not pass at about 10:40 p.m. Eastern, as no votes drastically outpaced yes votes 62.6% to 37.8% with about three-quarters of total ballots counted. The vote was expected to be close, and comes after a July poll had projected the “yes” vote would narrowly prevail, with 47% support versus 43% who opposed the amendment. The ballot measure—in language that abortion advocates criticized for being confusing — asked voters to decide if they wanted to amend the state … [Read more...] about Abortion Will Remain Legal In Kansas As Ballot Measure To Amend Constitution Fails

Are Embryos Dependents? New Georgia Policy Latest Anti-Abortion Effort To Give Tax Credits During Pregnancy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Georgia Department of Revenue now classifies any embryo or fetus with cardiac activity as a dependent eligible for child tax credits, part of a broader effort among anti-abortion advocates to implement child tax credits during pregnancy that could gain new steam in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade. Key Facts The Georgia policy allows anyone who’s been pregnant with an “unborn child” with a fetal heartbeat—which can be detected as early as six weeks into a pregnancy—to get $3,000 in personal tax exemptions per child when they file their tax return. The policy is based on Georgia’s six-week abortion ban, which grants personhood rights to fetuses, which had been blocked in court but took effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Georgia’s policy comes after Michigan House lawmakers previously passed a $200 tax credit for fetuses after 12 weeks gestation in … [Read more...] about Are Embryos Dependents?
