Thousands of activists, many in pink, took to the streets across the United States last Saturday in a national day of action calling for safe and legal access to abortion. The demonstrations are a response to leaked draft opinion showing the United States Supreme Court's conservative majority is considering overturning Roe v. Wade, a landmark 1973 ruling guaranteeing abortion access nationwide. "I just think that nobody has the right to make a decision on somebody else's body," said Hanna Williamson, 20, from the city of Suffolk, Virginia, who drove three hours to join several thousand protesters in Washington. "I think it should be left up to every individual. I am fighting for everyone else's rights in this." About 3,000 people assembled in a central square in Brooklyn and prepared to carry a giant pink banner that read: "Our Bodies. Our Futures. Our Abortions." The protesters, who included Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other influential Democrats, were of … [Read more...] about ‘My body my choice’: Thousands rally across US for abortion rights

Source: Reuters A Right to Health bill at the central level may still be in the works, but a draft bill in Rajasthan that proposes to hold the government accountable for providing affordable and easily accessible healthcare for all citizens has garnered attention across the country. The bill was placed in the public domain recently for stakeholder comments and feedback, which are being incorporated in the draft before it is presented in the state assembly. Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot had promised the right to healthcare ahead of the state assembly elections in 2018. Extensive consultations for the draft bill started soon after he was elected. US abortion rights activists start ‘summer of rage’
Abortion rights supporters participate in nationwide demonstrations following the leaked Supreme Court opinion suggesting the possibility of overturning the Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision, in New York City, US, May 14, 2022. (REUTERS/Eduardo Munoz) WASHINGTON — Thousands of abortion rights supporters gathered for protests across the United States on Saturday, starting what organizers said would be “a summer of rage” if the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide. Planned Parenthood, Women’s March, and other abortion-rights groups organized more than 400 “Bans Off Our Bodies” marches for Saturday, with the largest turnouts expected in New York City, Washington, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The demonstrations are in response to the May 2 leak of a draft opinion showing the court’s conservative majority ready to reverse the 1973 landmark decision that established a federal constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy. In Photos: Abortion Rights Advocates Rally Across U.S. With Supreme Court Expected To Overturn Roe V. Wade
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Protesters gathered at more than 300 events across the U.S. on Saturday, including in Washington, D.C., New York City and Houston, to demand access to abortion after a leaked draft opinion from the Supreme Court showed a majority of the court agreeing to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established the right under federal law to have an abortion. Key Facts Organizers of the protests have said the goal is to show that the majority of Americans do not support overturning Roe v. Wade. The protests are taking place less than two weeks after Politico leaked a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito that states that “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start.” More than a dozen states have laws in place to almost immediately ban abortion if the court overturns Roe v. Wade, and the majority of the bans also make performing the procedure a felony. … [Read more...] about In Photos: Abortion Rights Advocates Rally Across U.S. With Supreme Court Expected To Overturn Roe V. US-Malaysia panel on forced labour a step in the right direction, says MEF
PETALING JAYA: The working committee established between the Malaysian government and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to address issues related to forced labour is a step in the right direction, says the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF). MEF president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman said the committee could help resolve outstanding withhold release orders (WRO) imposed on some Malaysian exporters to the United States. The US CBP had slapped WRO on exports of several Malaysian companies especially in the palm oil and rubber glove industries on grounds of alleged forced labour practices. The working committee is the best approach to tackle the issue, he said in a statement on Sunday (May 15), while also expressing appreciation for the efforts of the US Embassy in Malaysia to help resolve the forced labour claims. The working committee, which will focus on the exchange of information and formulating policies that would support initiatives towards tackling forced … [Read more...] about US-Malaysia panel on forced labour a step in the right direction, says MEF
Why you need to take right-wing comedy seriously
It was one of the more spectacular TV flops of the 21st century. Late in the second term of President George W. Bush, in 2007, Fox News decided that it had the right-wing alternative to Comedy Central’s popular and influential The Daily Show with Jon Stewart . The 1/2 Hour News Hour would puncture liberal pieties and media bias in the fashion that Stewart and his cast of fake correspondents fired barbs at conservatives and right-wing media like Fox News. The show tanked—hard—more or less after the pilot aired in February 2007. And with its failure, modern progressives (and future leftists) had all the evidence they needed: Conservatives weren’t funny. advertisement advertisement For the last 15 years, that take—frequently informed by one failed late-night show—has stuck among anyone who isn’t a conservative. But all the while, right wingers were making comedy—and succeeding. Some of it flew under the radar in subterranean clubs and YouTube channels, … [Read more...] about Why you need to take right-wing comedy seriously
The Right Path To Incorporating Digital Mental Health Services
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In his State of the Union address , President Biden pledged to help “get all Americans the mental health services they need.” The president confirmed what many employers already know: America’s mental health crisis has taken on new urgency as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to drive up rates of depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol abuse and other challenges. Most organizational leaders believe they are stepping up to meet worker needs, but employees don’t necessarily see it that way. According to new research by The Hartford, 82% of employers say their companies have improved access to workplace mental health services in recent years, but only 50% of workers agree. To close that gap – and to help fulfill President Biden’s call – many organizations are turning to digital mental health solutions. As of 2020, the digital mental health market was already robust at around $142 billion in sales. Within five years it’s … [Read more...] about The Right Path To Incorporating Digital Mental Health Services
Is Elon Musk Right Or Wrong To Dismiss Hydrogen Use For Low-Carbon Energy Storage?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The context is transitioning from fossil energy to renewables. One key aspect of this is transport via gasoline or diesel vehicles and its transition to electric motors driven by batteries or hydrogen. The fossil fuel industry should be concerned about the efficiency and cost of sustainable transport, because that will determine the speed of the transition which will likely affect the decline of oil production and perhaps the oil and gas industry itself. Elon Musk knows batteries. He builds them: to propel cars and trucks, at one bookend, to grid-scale behemoths that store and stabilize electrical power for hundreds of homes and commercial enterprises, at the other bookend. Last week, May 12, 2022, Musk said hydrogen “is the most dumb thing I could possibly imagine for energy storage.” This is not the first time, as Musk has made similar negative comments in past years. A few years ago, Musk told reporters that hydrogen … [Read more...] about Is Elon Musk Right Or Wrong To Dismiss Hydrogen Use For Low-Carbon Energy Storage?
