More than two-thirds of the listees saw their wealth shrink. The complete list can be found here and in the August issue of Forbes Asia . The Philippines’ economy grew 8.3% in the first quarter of 2022, as domestic demand started recovering from the pandemic. Newly elected president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. pledged to keep up the growth momentum. Nonetheless, the pressures of inflation, rising commodity and energy prices as well as reduced exports to China dragged the benchmark stock index down 6% from 11 months ago when fortunes were last measured. There’s a deep disconnect between regular people and Beltway elites who are far removed from everyday suffering. No matter how Democrats will positively spin the slight drop in painful consumer price inflation announced today ( from 9.1% in June to 8.5% in July ), Americans are enduring a national pay cut due to wage growth that is far below inflation. Real average hourly earnings fell 3.6% from July 2021 to July 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . With a nearly 4% pay cut, it’s no wonder Americans are loading up on credit card debt , at a record not seen in 20 years, to pay for this inflation. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We are having a Goldilocks moment in American media. We simply can’t decide how much truth we really want. Too many lies can lead to expensive lawsuits, as Alex Jones proved this week with a $49M verdict for spreading misinformation about Sandy Hook. Too much truth, on the other hand, can lead to lawsuits by special interests afraid to have infamous stories made famous, as hundreds of writers have learned ( including this author). Is a healthy midpoint actually possible, or would the news simply lose all meaning? Or can we as consumers bend the news back towards the truth? Jones’ story should be a clarion call for both the right and the left to demand more truth from their storytellers. The future of democracy depends on it. Too Many Lies Last week, Alex Jones was caught lying about the Sandy Hook massacre . On December 14 th , 2012, 26 people were killed by a mass shooter , including 20 children between … [Read more...] about Alex Jones Begs The Question, What’s More Expensive For Media: Lies, Or The Truth?
The Fargo Public School Board in North Dakota voted on Tuesday to stop reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at school board meetings, citing diversity concerns and the Pledge’s use of the phrase “one nation under God.” The action overturns an earlier decision by the school board to begin reciting the Pledge at meetings. The motion to include the Pledge was approved in March on a 6-2 vote, with Vice President and current board member Seth Holden as well as current board member Jim Johnson voting against the measure. “I move that the Fargo board of education rescind the action it took on March 22nd, 2022 in which it voted to begin each regular meeting with a Pledge of Allegiance immediately following the call to order,” Holden said in the Aug. 9 meeting of the Fargo School Board.
