PHUKET: Waking up on a boat in Phang Nga Bay fills a person with wonder. Looking out across the bay, a magical, surreal sensation consumes you. It is not waking up from a dream, but waking up into one; the calm azure sea weaves its way around countless limestone outcroppings, the karst topography almost an extension of the water’s flow. It gives a yachtie, and their lucky passengers, the sense of waking up in a fantastical museum. The tiny jungle-topped islands are sculptures in front of you, tempting your imagination to explore beyond what seems like reality. As the sun slowly rises up above the horizon and its light starts to play with colors, blues become vibrant – going green in shallow waters and gaining intensity in deeper areas. I would imagine each person sees this beauty in a slightly different way. With these cruising grounds at our doorstep, it is no surprise that the inaugural Thailand Yacht Show is taking place in Phuket. Of course it is not just the beauty of the … [Read more...] about Island View: Beauty, boats and bays

Shelter-In-Place Downturn Leads Compass To Cut Staff By 15%
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Forecasting a massive hit from policies to stop the spread of coronavirus, New York real estate startup Compass has laid off 15% of its employees. “As we continue to hope for the best, we need to prepare for the worst, ” CEO Robert Reffkin wrote Monday in an email to his staff. “So we are joining thousands of other companies across the country in making the heartbreaking decision to let some members of our team go.” As the coronavirus pandemic has roiled stock markets and forced businesses around the United States to put operations on hold, companies have started laying off workers . Economists, including those at real estate services firm CBRE, predict the unemployment rate will jump to over 5%, from 3.5% —meaning 2 million to 3 million people could soon lose jobs. Reffkin argued the rate could go as high at 10%. The roughly 375 Compass cuts—which hit departments including marketing, finance and M&A—came … [Read more...] about Shelter-In-Place Downturn Leads Compass To Cut Staff By 15%
Some Are Clearly Missing The Point Of The 40-Year-Old New Wave Hit ’99 Luftballons’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The suspected Chinese spy balloon – which Beijing maintains is a rogue weather balloon – has led to a serious diplomatic crisis, and even resulted in U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceling a weekend trip to China. While the Pentagon has said the balloon poses no threat to the United States, Blinken called the alleged surveillance an "irresponsible act" and a "clear violation of U.S. sovereignty and international law." The balloon's presence over the United States has added to already rising tensions between Washington and Beijing, and both Democratic and Republican lawmakers had been seen to be rather hawkish on China on Friday. Questions were asked about why efforts weren't made to shoot down or otherwise bring down the balloon. However, the timing of the incident could be seen as good news for the German New Wave pop group Nena, which already had plans for a summer European tour . Since the balloon was first … [Read more...] about Some Are Clearly Missing The Point Of The 40-Year-Old New Wave Hit ’99 Luftballons’
Planned WWE WrestleMania 39 Match A Welcome Change For Ronda Rousey
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Ronda Rousey will be at WWE WrestleMania 39, but she won’t have a top match on the show. According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t SEScoops ), Rousey is slated to team with Shayna Baszler in a match against Io Sky and Dakota Kai for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship, a surprising twist for a high-profile star who has typically dominated the world title picture. Rousey’s future has been up in the air after the former UFC star shockingly dropped the SmackDown Women’s Championship to Charlotte Flair last December. That was one of many reported changes to plans involving Rousey and the upper echelon of WWE’s women’s division, with Rousey once slated to face Raquel Rodriguez before that match was ultimately removed from Royal Rumble and Rousey was taken off the pay-per-view altogether. At one point penciled in for a SmackDown Women’s title defense at WrestleMania 39, Rousey couldn’t agree to … [Read more...] about Planned WWE WrestleMania 39 Match A Welcome Change For Ronda Rousey
Lies, Damn Lies, Payroll Data
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The big spike in the Payroll data (+517K) was out of kilter with what has been occurring in the rest of the economy and in other labor market data. Financial markets always shoot first and ask questions later, so, on Friday, equity markets fell and bond yields rose on the fear that the Fed would now have a great excuse to raise interest rates even further than what was already priced in. The far-right hand sides of the above charts show the violent up spikes in the yields of the 10-Yr. and 2-Yr. T-Notes on Friday (February 3). As reported by various reliable sources with deep research capabilities, most or all of the +517K job gains wasn’t due to new job creation, but to benchmark revisions, seasonal adjustments, and population controls , all keywords for what we can only describe as statistical magic . Morgan Stanley MS concluded that without the population adjustments, the Household Survey (which was up an even … [Read more...] about Lies, Damn Lies, Payroll Data

Norwegian Air Axes Up To 50% Of Employees As Coronavirus Layoffs Begin
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline: As the coronavirus pandemic craters the world’s markets and disrupts the daily lives of millions, Norwegian Air said Thursday it would suspend around 4,000 flights and temporarily lay off up to 50% of its workers as businesses contend with sharp declines in revenue. 40% of Norwegian’s long haul fleet and 25% of its short haul fleet will be grounded until May, according to a press release. 50 employees from the South by Southwest music festival were let go after the 2020 event was canceled. Other layoffs include 145 drivers from the Port of Los Angeles as ships from China stopped arriving, the Washington Post reported . Unemployment Rate Shoots Up To 4.4%, But The Worst Is Yet To Come
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin (Updated 8:34 a.m. ET, April 3, 2020) Topline: The unemployment rate in March ticked up to 4.4% from 3.5% in February, but the data doesn’t yet reflect the full magnitude of the millions of job losses the United States has seen over the last two weeks alone due to the coronavirus pandemic. Employers cut 701,000 workers from their payrolls, up from 10o,000 expected. It’s the first payroll decline since 2010 . Employment in leisure and hospitality—industries heavily affected by the slowdown—fell by 459,000, the Labor Department said, mostly in food services and drinking places. Healthcare and social assistance, retail, and construction also saw notable declines. The uptick in job losses reflects the early days of the labor market crisis, but since the survey for the March report was conducted in the middle of the month, April’s numbers will be more indicative of the scope of job losses. Weekly jobless … [Read more...] about Unemployment Rate Shoots Up To 4.4%, But The Worst Is Yet To Come
Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon
Not just Bengaluru, many towns and cities across India — Jodhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Silchar, Surat, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Gurugram (above), to name a few — were flooded after spells of intense rain that overwhelmed their poor and choked urban infrastructure. (Image: @ashwinning/Twitter) While there are a host of manmade and natural factors behind the increasing incidence of floods in Indian cities, it is the former that is more to blame, experts have warned, emphasising that the environment must be respected and things set right before it is too late. Unplanned construction in low-lying areas and wetlands, rampant concretisation, choked and overwhelmed storm-water drains, as well as disappearing water bodies and natural water channels are responsible for urban floods, which throw life out of gear in cities every monsoon. A spurt in spells of very heavy rainfall in short durations triggered by erratic weather patterns is a double whammy for already-choked urban infrastructure, … [Read more...] about Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon
