$20 Billion In Retail Rents Due: Why Collaboration Is The Only Way Forward

April 14, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin To say we are in uncharted territory is an understatement. We’ve been through Black Swan events before, but what seems different this time around is the high level of uncertainty that is still present several weeks into the pandemic in the U.S. (months globally). Normally at this juncture, we have a better understanding of what transpired and a clearer path forward. But for retail, the big question on everyone’s mind is, with as much as $20 billion in retail rents due , where do we go from here? I’ve been in this business for many years on both sides of the aisle and often tenants and landlords come to the negotiating table with differing viewpoints. But that mentality must be put aside for the industry to pull through this crisis. At the risk of waxing poetic – now, more than ever, is the time for landlords and retailers to come together if we are to have shopping centers and stores for quarantined-weary consumers to … [Read more...] about $20 Billion In Retail Rents Due: Why Collaboration Is The Only Way Forward

Dufry Loses Retail Toehold In Germany As Heinemann Returns To Country’s Fourth Busiest Airport

June 25, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hamburg-based travel retailer Gebr. Heinemann was rejoicing this week as it ousted Dufry by winning the tender to run the core retail business at Düsseldorf Airport, Germany’s fourth busiest air gateway after Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin. Heinemann—with revenue of $2.2 billion (€2.1 billion) in 2021—will run a new ten-year concession to operate four duty-free and travel retail stores across all three terminals (A, B, C) from January 10, next year. The 43,000 square feet of space is currently operated by World Duty Free, a Dufry company, and will be stocked with familiar products ranging across liquor, tobacco, confectionery, beauty, fashion, accessories, watches and jewelry. The victory is sweet. World Duty Free, acquired by Dufry in 2015 , took the Düsseldorf concession away from Heinemann in January 2013 after 20 years at the airport. Getting it back was always going to be an objective for family-owned Heinemann which … [Read more...] about Dufry Loses Retail Toehold In Germany As Heinemann Returns To Country’s Fourth Busiest Airport

Top Cannabis Researcher Predicts Double-Digit Increase In Sales On July 4th

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A top cannabis researcher is predicting that despite valid concerns surrounding inflation, sales on July 4th will generate a double-digit increase, likely racking up the highest number in sales for any day in the market this summer. The reason for this surge? “Cannabis is a ‘sticky’ good and the market is resilient,” said Roy Bingham, co-founder and CEO of Colorado-based BDSA . “We predict that summer cannabis sales will remain steady, peaking around the 4 th of July holiday.” Also, with more people travelling and many social activities commencing after the COVID-19 restrictions of the last two years, the summer season’s festivities will be especially pronounced. According to BDSA, these rosy projections are based on sales from the previous year. Last year, in California, the largest legal cannabis market in the U.S., July 4th amassed the highest daily dollar sales for that month, pulling in a total that was 30% … [Read more...] about Top Cannabis Researcher Predicts Double-Digit Increase In Sales On July 4th

Let's face it. Being an entrepreneur is a difficult job. And in this high-risk, high-reward profession, you must develop strategies to deal with stress . You must find ways to keep your energy high and reduce daily anxiety . And if you're like me, running a business is only part of your life responsibilities. The Poland captain is the Blaugrana's top transfer target this summer, but the Bavarians have been adamant that he is not for sale and insist he should ride out his contract which expires in June next year. Lewandowski has publicly tried to force a move away from the Bundesliga champions which has been met with criticism by club higher-ups and legends such as CEO Oliver Kahn. According to Sky , however, Bayern have had a change of heart and are now willing to listen to offers from Barca for Lewandowski and negotiate his sale. Despite having 12 months to run on his curent deal, though, Lewandowski will not come cheap. From Supply Crunch To Supply Glut: How To Navigate Uncertainty?

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Retailers might have thought they’d seen enough disruption these past two years to last a lifetime. If only this was the case. The industry must once again confront a new set of economic headwinds. From high inflation to eroding confidence to ongoing supply chain issues, pressure on the global economy is growing — and the effects are weighing heavily on both consumers and businesses. Consider the recent decline in consumer spending and sentiment. Retail sales have contracted since 2021, and consumer sentiment is down significantly, nearing levels we last saw at the time of the 2008 financial crisis. Clearly, inflationary pressures are a factor here. High and persistent inflation is eating into incomes and consumer purchasing power. Discretionary spending is pulling back as a result. However, Accenture’s ACN analysis indicates other dynamics are also in play. Take the fact that consumer spending on durable … [Read more...] about From Supply Crunch To Supply Glut: How To Navigate Uncertainty?

Mall Owners Play Offense In Aéropostale Deal

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A girl rides up an escalator at Aeropostale's flagship store in Times Square in New York, U.S. ... [+] Photographer: Ramin Talaie/Bloomberg At first blush, the news of Simon Property Group and General Growth Properties stepping in to save failing retailer Aéropostale from certain bankruptcy seems surprising – but a deeper look reveals, it’s anything but. The deal, a reported $243 million, between Simon, GGP and Authentic Brands Group (operators of Juicy Couture among others) was initially slated to keep all 229 Aéropostale stores open at the two landlord’s properties. However, it appears the two largest mall operators in the country were able to use their relationships and influence to convince other Aéropostale landlords to provide rent concessions for an additional 171 stores – bringing the tally of locations that will remain open to 400. 1/OFF Paris: 400% Growth For The Upcycled Fashion Brand Taking Sustainability To Luxury’s Eco-Apathetic

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the biggest challenges for any purpose-led brand pursuing game-changer status isn’t breeding a fanbase who ‘get it’ but selling a vital new narrative to the hardcore apathetic. For fashion, mired in climate crisis and battling the clock to cultivate a circular economy, retuning fans’ mindsets (America throws away and 2150 pieces of clothing every second and even people with positive eco intentions are loathe to sacrifice what they perceive as an identify-defining hobby ) is now mission imperative. Dutch fashion brand 1/OFF Paris, whose couturiers splice together or respectfully reinterpret iconic vintage garments to create ultra-covetable new pieces (think: a Levi’s denim jacket with Chanel’s quintessential ladies-who-lunch tweed; double layered jeans; or two oversized classic men’s blazers tailored into a freshly feminized silhouette) is doing just that. Selling to an audience including legions of the … [Read more...] about 1/OFF Paris: 400% Growth For The Upcycled Fashion Brand Taking Sustainability To Luxury’s Eco-Apathetic

How Department Stores Will Survive

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are retail giants – Macy’s, Dillard’s, Nordstrom JWN . Bloomingdale’s to mention just a few. Will they survive and what will they be like? Are they the dinosaurs of yesteryear? Recently there was a shopping center convention in Seattle, hosted by Nordstrom and under the aegis of IGDS (International Group of Department Stores}, that discussed the past, present and especially the future. Some observations are included below. 1. Changes will occur, and it is important to know that young people, millennials and GenZ want to have a say in what stores will be like. They will dictate content, rapid service and especially whether stores have taken action on sustainability. 2. Sustainability must include reduction of gases, conservation of energy, storage and usage of solar energy, 3. To compete and to survive in the current, challenging environment, brands require economies of scale that are often beyond their … [Read more...] about How Department Stores Will Survive
