The Government’s Era Of (Nearly) Free Money Is Over, At Least For Now.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The federal government may once again have an opportunity to learn a painful lesson about the price of increasing debt and rising interest rates in an uncertain economy. The Congressional Budget Office, in its just-issued Budget and Economic Outlook , forecasts a hair-raising increase in federal borrowing costs over the next decade. CBO estimates that net interest as a share of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will roughly double over the next decade—from 1.6 percent to a decidedly uncomfortable 3.3 percent. That’s a significant increase from last year’s forecast of 2.7 percent. $8 trillion in interest To put it another way, the US government will spend more than $8 trillion in interest over the next decade, nearly 11 percent of its total spending. For context, in 2032, the feds will pay more in interest than for any other federal program, except for Social Security and Medicare. CBO projects the federal government … [Read more...] about The Government’s Era Of (Nearly) Free Money Is Over, At Least For Now.
More UK Conservatives pull support from Boris Johnson over ‘partygate’
LONDON (Reuters) -Three lawmakers from Britain's governing Conservatives pulled their support for Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday over a damning report that detailed a series of alcohol-fuelled parties at 10 Downing Street that broke COVID-19 lockdown rules. A day after the report was published, describing a boozy culture at his Downing Street office during lockdowns, Conservative lawmakers John Baron, David Simmonds and Stephen Hammond said they could no longer support the prime minister. Their voices add to a growing list of Conservative lawmakers who have called for Johnson to resign over what has been dubbed 'partygate', despite the prime minister's repeated apologies, although there are still not enough to prompt a confidence vote. Baron, first elected in 2001, said he was withdrawing his support because he believed Johnson had "knowingly" misled parliament -- a charge the prime minister denies but which is being investigated by a parliamentary committee. "Given … [Read more...] about More UK Conservatives pull support from Boris Johnson over ‘partygate’

Oil’s Geopolitical Risks to Outweigh Trade Concerns
Oil prices have been steadily pulling back from six-month highs as trade worries intensify, with the U.S. threat to raise tariffs against Chinese goods appearing likely to become reality tonight. Both sides have been hardening their stance, and if we see an all-out tariff war, oil could slide lower along with a global rout in equities and commodity currencies. The trade spat is raising global growth concerns, which could put a dent in the demand side of the argument for higher oil prices. If talks do not completely fall apart, we could see oil markets quickly focus on the geopolitical risks from Iran, Russia, Venezuela and Libya. Iran The escalation in the rift between the U.S. and Iran is showing no signs of slowing down. The ending of U.S. sanction waivers at the beginning of the month is adding further pressure to an already weak Iranian economy .
