LONDON (Reuters) -Three lawmakers from Britain's governing Conservatives pulled their support for Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday over a damning report that detailed a series of alcohol-fuelled parties at 10 Downing Street that broke COVID-19 lockdown rules. A day after the report was published, describing a boozy culture at his Downing Street office during lockdowns, Conservative lawmakers John Baron, David Simmonds and Stephen Hammond said they could no longer support the prime minister. Their voices add to a growing list of Conservative lawmakers who have called for Johnson to resign over what has been dubbed 'partygate', despite the prime minister's repeated apologies, although there are still not enough to prompt a confidence vote. Baron, first elected in 2001, said he was withdrawing his support because he believed Johnson had "knowingly" misled parliament -- a charge the prime minister denies but which is being investigated by a parliamentary committee. UK imposes 25% energy windfall tax to help households as bills surge
- A + A LONDON (May 26): Britain announced a 25% windfall tax on oil and gas producers' profits on Thursday, alongside a £15 billion (US$18.9 billion) package of support for households struggling to meet soaring energy bills. The move, which will give each UK household a £400 discount on their energy bill and more for lowest-income households, marks a change of heart for Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government, which had previously resisted windfall taxes, calling them a deterrent to investment. It is the second emergency policy intervention to help with rising bills this year. Facing intense political pressure to provide more support for people coping with what political opponents and campaigners have called a cost-of-living crisis, finance minister Rishi Sunak said energy firms were making extraordinary profits while Britons struggled. "We will introduce a temporary and targeted energy profits levy but we have built into the new levy a new investment … [Read more...] about UK imposes 25% energy windfall tax to help households as bills surge

Monkeypox spreading through sex, but not an STI
This handout photo taken in the year 2001 and received on May 23, 2022 from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German federal government agency and research institute responsible for disease control and prevention, shows a coloured electron-microscopic capture of the monkeypox virus. (Photo: AFP) For years, the dating application Grindr has doled out sexual health tips to its more than 11 million users. Now, the app, which serves the gay, bisexual and transgender community, is using its platform to get the word out about monkeypox, a virus that has long been endemic in parts of Africa but has recently spread to countries including the United States and the United Kingdom. Monkeypox is characterised by clusters of blister-like rashes, which health officials say has led to misdiagnosing the disease as common sexually transmitted infections. The virus also appears to be spreading in much the same way as STIs: through close, intimate contact. But repeated misdiagnoses could allow … [Read more...] about Monkeypox spreading through sex, but not an STI
Japan to start reopening to foreign tourists from June 10
- A + A (May 26): Japan is set to allow in some package-tour tourists from overseas starting June 10, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said Thursday, ending a ban that was introduced about two years ago as part of the country’s virus control programme. “Active exchanges between people are the foundation of the economy and society,” Kishida said in a speech at the Future of Asia conference in Tokyo. “From the 10th of next month we will restart the admission of tourists on guided package tours.” He added that preparations would begin to allow international flights to land at New Chitose airport in Hokkaido and Naha airport in Okinawa starting in June. Tourist numbers are likely to remain limited at first. Japan has already announced it will double its cap on arrivals from overseas to 20,000 a day starting next month, though this remains far below the levels seen before the pandemic. Kishida pledged in a London speech to make it as easy to enter Japan as other Group of … [Read more...] about Japan to start reopening to foreign tourists from June 10
Phuket Finance: An expat’s guide to the inevitable
PHUKET: It’s natural to experience culture shock as an expat, but the real shock comes when expats consider just how complicated proper investment or financial planning becomes after they expatriate from their home countries. Here are some of the key areas expats will need to have a plan for and likely consult with knowledgeable experts about. EXCHANGE RATE AND REMITTANCE Expats whose income is largely fixed and denominated in a currency different from that used in the country in which they are living need to have a plan for dealing with exchange rate fluctuations as well as transactional costs of having their money remitted to them. In the worst case scenario, where the exchange rate makes a big and sustained movement not in the expats’ favor, they may have to plan on making major cutbacks in living expenses or even return home. INFLATION For most expats in Phuket, their home country has low inflation and low interest rates. Expats need to tie up cash in a much … [Read more...] about Phuket Finance: An expat’s guide to the inevitable
