Martin Andanar Malacañang on Saturday said the “politicization that has infiltrated” the International Criminal Court (ICC) would be exposed if it allowed its Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan to resume the investigation of President Duterte’s bloody war on drugs. Acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar said the Philippine government was “exasperated” over Khan’s application to the tribunal’s Pre-Trial Chamber for authority to resume the probe even though it was the first time that the ICC prosecutor has made the request. Khan requested the authority to resume investigation on Friday after he found “no indication” that the Philippine government had investigated or was investigating police and government leadership conduct in the bloody war on drugs as the administration had promised when it asked that the probe be deferred. Khan’s office suspended its inquiry in November last year. Andanar insisted that the Duterte administration had been transparent in addressing the … [Read more...] about Palace sees ‘politicization’ in ICC prober’s push vs Duterte

The Office Monsters Are Trying to Claw Their Way Back to 2019
Representative image Some corporate leaders are grasping at whatever they can to get back to the way things were. But they might find themselves fighting a culture shift beyond their control. As long as work has existed, employers have tried to size up their employees’ commitment to their jobs. Are you on the fast track? The mommy track? The leadership track? Now, if some corporate leaders have their way, there will be a new test for workplace devotion — and anyone who opts for remote work gets a failing grade. But can C.E.O.s really claw their way back to 2019? This past week, Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to Tesla and SpaceX employees requiring them to return to the office for at least 40 hours per week — or lose their jobs. Mr. Musk, who is known for having camped out for weeks at Tesla factories, thinks remote work is an affront to productivity and personal commitment. Last month, he praised Chinese workers for “burning the 3 a.m. oil,” comparing them with … [Read more...] about The Office Monsters Are Trying to Claw Their Way Back to 2019

The war in Ukraine hasn’t ended. Here’s how these founders continue to build their businesses
In those first few fraught hours of February 24th, after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Anastasiia Smyk, CEO and co-founder of aviation software startup Input Soft , recalls being in a state of shock and incredulity. She was in Kyiv at the time, but her 11-strong team was scattered around the country. advertisement advertisement “The first week we were just thinking about how to survive at a human level,” says the 25-year-old entrepreneur. “So we decided to rent a house for our team in the Carpathian mountains, in the [safer] western part of Ukraine, and told them they could go there with their families to wait until we knew more about what was happening. Some of them went. Others were unable to get out.” One of those left behind was the startup’s accountant, whose home town of Kherson, in southern Ukraine, has been under Russian occupation since early March. On May 3rd, when the internet and mobile communications went down, she decided to risk her … [Read more...] about The war in Ukraine hasn’t ended. This line in the Supreme Court abortion ruling signals gay marriage and contraception could be next
In another monumental 6-3 ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday eliminated the federal right to an abortion, striking down the protection granted by the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 and now leaving rights and regulations to states. advertisement advertisement The consequences of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will be severe, and in some cases, immediate: Many states have “trigger bans,” allowing abortion prohibitions to go into law right away. Other states intended to put into place bans after the decision was published, which was all but certain following a leak of the draft in May. But the consequences of the broad decision could be even more far-reaching than women’s rights to abortions, namely placing in danger the legal rights to contraception, same-sex marriage, and even private sexual relationships. The basis of the decision, in the opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito, was that the right to abortion … [Read more...] about This line in the Supreme Court abortion ruling signals gay marriage and contraception could be next
Indigo case: Airlines should sensitise staff to assist special needs flyers better
An IndiGo staffer called a distressed teen with disability a threat to other passengers. (Screengrab from video posted on Facebook by Manisha Gupta). It will not be long before the outrage dies down around the recent incident of private airlines IndiGo barring a specially-abled child from boarding a flight at the Ranchi airport, when things will go back to the usual, where most of us will continue to ignore and fail to acknowledge that everyday there are scores of people with disabilities who will continue to face indignity, humiliation and discrimination. The Ranchi incident, while shocking, is perhaps not far from the everyday reality that persons with disabilities (PwD) face every day in India. We must admit that we are not a country that supports the 26 million people living with either physical or learning disabilities. We have almost zero infrastructure that aids people with disabilities to help them face the stigma, discrimination and harassment that they tend to face on a … [Read more...] about Indigo case: Airlines should sensitise staff to assist special needs flyers better
Want to Truly Make Your Mark on the World? Start by Following These 5 Principles
C.J. Walker, the daughter of slaves, would not have become the first self-made female millionaire in America had she not traveled around the country training thousands of black women how to apply and sell her hair concoction. Anthropologists would never have had the insights we now know about primates had not a young British woman named Jane Goodall ventured to Africa to develop her own system of communicating with chimpanzees, despite being scoffed at by academics. And Spanx wouldn't be a staple of millions of women's wardrobes had Sara Blakely --who sold fax machines door to door at the time--not tried to mass produce a pair of pantyhose she hacked on her way to a party. These and other iconic stories of fearlessness are chronicled by Jean Case in her new book Be Fearless: 5 Principles for a Life of Breakthroughs and Purpose (Simon & Schuster, 2019). On Saturday, during a lively discussion at the Inc. Founders House in Austin, Case--the chairman of the National … [Read more...] about Want to Truly Make Your Mark on the World? Friday Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops $500 Million, ‘Lightyear’ Plunges 74%
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Even if Top Gun: Maverick ends up just below Elvis atop the domestic box office in its fifth weekend, it won’t be for a lack of trying. Paramount and Skydance’s $170 million action drama earned another $8.25 million on its fifth Friday, dropping 26% from last Friday for a new $499.472 million domestic cume. Tom Cruise’s legacy sequel is passing $500 million domestic by the end of this sentence. It’s looking like a $30.1 million fifth-weekend gross for the Joseph Kosinski-directed flick, which would be A) a drop of just 33% and B) the second or third-biggest fifth-weekend gross alongside Titanic ($30.1 million) and Avatar ($42 million). That brings its domestic cume to $521 million by Sunday night. Presuming a continued 53/47 domestic/overseas split and a thus-far solid opening weekend in South Korea, Top Gun: Maverick should end tomorrow night just over/under the $1 billion mark in global grosses. Among domestic … [Read more...] about Friday Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops $500 Million, ‘Lightyear’ Plunges 74%
