Tesla’s removal from S&P Index sparks debate about ESG ratings

May 19, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK (May 19): A benchmark ESG stock index has removed Tesla Inc, sparking a debate about which companies do — and don’t — pass muster with socially aware investors. Tesla has grown into a US$735 billion company on the back of its breakthrough electric-vehicle engineering. Its own carbon footprint is a small fraction of its peers, and its success in the market has pushed the industry overall away from gas-powered vehicles. But the other components of ESG — the social and governance risks — give investors pause. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk is an unconventional manager, prone to impulsive tweeting, and the company discloses very little information about its workforce or labour conditions. That split became material Wednesday after it emerged that Tesla was expelled from the ESG version of the S&P 500 Index. Musk responded by saying ESG is “a scam”. It added to an already bad day for the company, whose stock fell 6.8% amid a broad selloff in tech … [Read more...] about Tesla’s removal from S&P Index sparks debate about ESG ratings

The Russian Army Has Set Its Sights On A Single Small City In Eastern Ukraine

May 19, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Eighty-five days into Russia’s wider war on Ukraine, the Kremlin’s aims have shrunk to miles and towns. If there’s an overarching strategic goal in Moscow right now, it’s to surround and destroy the handful of Ukrainian brigades around Severodonetsk, a city with a pre-war population of 100,000 in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Compare that to Russia’s initial goals—to occupy Kyiv, decapitate the Ukrainian government, capture all of Donbas and Ukraine’s Black Sea coast and destroy the Ukrainian armed forces. Three months ago, Moscow planned to smash Ukraine into a leaderless, landlocked and unarmed rump state. Now, Russian leaders might settle for slightly expanding their control in Donbas and possibly eliminating a few Ukrainian brigades. Even that isn’t going well for the Russians. In the last week, Russian forces have captured a few hamlets around Severodonetsk. But the town of Lyman, which anchors … [Read more...] about The Russian Army Has Set Its Sights On A Single Small City In Eastern Ukraine

Sky-high US gasoline prices to lure more imports from Asia

May 20, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 19): The worsening gasoline crunch looks set to buoy Asian refiners — particularly those in India — as sky-high US prices encourage more exports. US pump prices have now risen above US$4 a gallon in all states for the first time ever as the summer driving season approaches. JPMorgan Chase & Co forecast this week that American gasoline could surge to as high as US$6.20 a gallon by August, which would be more than double the price a year ago. Motor fuel is taking over from diesel as the major focus of oil-product supply fears, with the tightening market stretching a global refining system that was hit by closures over the last couple of years due to Covid-19. In Asia, gasoline margins jumped to almost US$35 a barrel this week, and are now near those for diesel, which have eased from a peak in early May. “The tightness in the Atlantic Basin, especially in the US, should continue to see Asian gasoline barrels pulled West,” said Dylan Sim, an … [Read more...] about Sky-high US gasoline prices to lure more imports from Asia
