Malaysia’s digital economy to contribute 22.6% to GDP, create half a million jobs by 2025
SINGAPORE: The digital economy is expected to contribute 22.6 per cent of Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and create over 500,000 jobs by 2025, said Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba. Dr Adham said Malaysia has placed priorities on expanding the adoption of digital consumer tools (e-commerce and digital payments); attracting, training, and retaining digital talent; fostering digital entrepreneurial ventures; providing fast fibre optics and mobile broadband Internet access; as well as coordinating innovation between universities, businesses and digital authorities. "The level of digital evolution helped cushion against the pandemic’s economic impact. For example, more digitally-evolved economies tend to derive a larger share of their GDP from high-tech sectors, where the workforce can shift to remote working more readily. "In addition, they tend to be better at delivering public services online due to superior infrastructure, experience … [Read more...] about Malaysia’s digital economy to contribute 22.6% to GDP, create half a million jobs by 2025
A rocket scientist designed a solution for your moldy strawberries
More than a third of the food produced in the U.S. goes uneaten—and berries and salad greens are among the most likely to end up in the trash, since both tend to go bad quickly. (ReFED, a food waste nonprofit, estimates that 20% of the strawberries grown in a year are wasted.) advertisement advertisement But a California-based startup called SAVRpak is pioneering a new solution: a thermodynamic sticker that goes inside a package and captures condensation, so strawberries or spinach can last longer. Bill Birgen, an aerospace engineer who previously invented technology to control the environment inside jets and spacecraft, designed the patch for his own use more than a decade ago after his salads kept wilting. “He was looking at his lunch, and he’s like, ‘My lunch is so sad—I need to do something about this,'” says Grant Stafford, co-CEO of SAVRpak, who later partnered with Birgen to help bring the product to scale. “He sat down and he built a few … [Read more...] about A rocket scientist designed a solution for your moldy strawberries
This tech can see inside fruit, so we know exactly when it will be ripe
When a shipment of avocados arrives at an importer in the Netherlands, each fruit goes down a conveyor belt and two things happen: First, a machine applies an invisible, edible coating to help the avocado last longer. Next, the machine uses hyperspectral imaging—the same tech used by NASA to look for life on Mars—to look inside the fruit without removing the peel. advertisement “This technology gives us the ability to see things about fruits and vegetables that you just couldn’t see before with the naked eye,” says James Rogers, CEO of Apeel, the California-based company that makes the technology. The company, founded in 2012, first began working on food waste by developing its food-based coating to act like a second peel to protect food ; it can make it last twice as long. (So far, the company has applied the coating to avocados, apples, limes, oranges, mandarins, lemons, and plastic-free cucumbers.) Today, Apeel announced that it has acquired ImpactVision, another … [Read more...] about This tech can see inside fruit, so we know exactly when it will be ripe
I’m a Black entrepreneur. Here’s how I advocate for inclusion at work
Being a Black entrepreneur at this time in history carries an enormous amount of responsibility to give back, because no one succeeds alone. I couldn’t imagine starting a business that didn’t more fully address the enormous gaps in diversity and inclusivity that so many companies suffer from, so that’s exactly what I did. advertisement advertisement By now, most everyone is familiar with reports on employees’ dissatisfaction when it comes to spotlighting and advocating for diverse voices in the workplace. My culture concierge company focused on events and artisan gifts called Culture With Us Corporation (that encompasses Virtual With Us, Culture With Us, and Altrosero) began when I pivoted my career path. I was working as a wine communications executive who experienced frustration and eventually burnout. Thanks to my commitment to lasting change along with a leap of faith, I’m in the unique position of being able to spotlight a range of Black and BIPOC … [Read more...] about I’m a Black entrepreneur. Wholesale price increases can threaten growth recovery, say economists
Representational Image. Wholesale prices in India rose 15.1 percent in April from a year earlier, the most in three decades, increasing cost pressures on producers and likely affecting growth, economists said. Inflation as measured by the Wholesale Price Index was at the highest level on record in the current 2011-12 series. Prices of food, fuel and manufacturing registered an exponential spike in April, with the sharpest increases in fuel and power prices. While WPI has risen considerably since 2015, the 13 percent jump between FY21 and FY22 was the highest. Global factors Close The index is dominated by manufactured products, which have a weight of 64 percent and are influenced significantly by global factors such as the pandemic and geopolitical tensions. Consequently, an increase in global prices gets reflected more in the WPI, according to economists. “The key factors behind the increase in the WPI are elevated global commodity prices and … [Read more...] about Wholesale price increases can threaten growth recovery, say economists
Market is in a short to medium term downtrend: Alchemy’s Hiren Ved
The market is in a short to medium term downtrend, Alchemy Capital Management CEO Hiren Ved told CNBC-TV18. “We will probably continue to see some earnings and margin pressure going into the first quarter. Most of that should get priced in because, with these results coming in, unless inflation goes completely out of hand, most of the stuff should get priced in,” Ved said. Because of the headlines and the headwinds, the sentiment is really varied. “My view is that we don’t have a very significant downside from these levels.” Mighty IT Ved said the structural story is intact and there isn’t going to be any significant slowdown, despite valuations being on the higher side. Close “Hoping that these businesses can deliver 15 to 20 compounded earnings growth over the next couple of years is pretty much possible. In an environment where inflation is a challenge, this sector, at least from a demand and margin perspective, should be reasonably okay. Most of these … [Read more...] about Market is in a short to medium term downtrend: Alchemy’s Hiren Ved
Should Mother’s Day Be a Company Holiday? According to Kendra Scott, Absolutely
Kendra Scott is making the day after Mother's Day a company holiday, and she thinks you should too. Starting this year, the Austin-based eponymous jewelry company will make Mother's Day a paid company holiday. Through the initiative, called "Take the Time," the company's retail and customer care teams working on Sunday will be paid an increased holiday rate, and the corporate office and distribution center will be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. "Whether our employees are working moms themselves or they want to take the time to celebrate a parental figure in their life, we want to give them the time to do that," Scott says. By publicizing her company's initiative, Scott hopes to galvanize other leaders to follow suit in making Mother's Day a company holiday for all employees. It's a tactic that Reshma Saujani -- founder of Marshall Plan for Moms and Girls Who Code , and author of Pay Up -- says has real merit. "Working moms are struggling with … [Read more...] about Should Mother’s Day Be a Company Holiday? According to Kendra Scott, Absolutely
Your Essential Guide To Trentino: Italy’s Year-Round Natural Playground
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When a part of the world is as dominated by mountains as Trentino in Italy’s glorious north undeniably is, it can be easy to forget there are four seasons in every year. Standing in late winter atop the tangle of ski runs that drape themselves conveniently across the precipitous slopes above the town of Madonna di Campiglio , casting an appreciative eye over a far-reaching blanket of crisp white snow ever so slightly yellowed by the drifting sands of the Sahara Desert blown in from afar on invisible winds, and shadowed by the towering peaks of the Dolomite mountains behind me and Alps in front, it’s hard to conceive how this would all look outside of winter’s icy grip. As my mind wanders and contemplates the awesomeness of the environment, my local mountain guide, Marco Maganzini, snaps me out of my reverie with another story of year-round derring do that unwittingly answers my question. The truth is, this place is a … [Read more...] about Your Essential Guide To Trentino: Italy’s Year-Round Natural Playground
