The community also extends to fans who wait through the night for autographs. “I’ll say, `Let’s throw a zombie into the crowd!’ `cause everyone wants to take their picture with a zombie,” laughs Mazzara. “But it’s really about having people on the ground listening. Our location manager suggested setting up a couple of tables on Main Street and doing an autograph signing for the local people. We’re trying to figure out how to organize that. Our cast is really generous about giving back to fans. We know we’ve done something right when we pack up to leave, and they say, `When are you coming back?’“ … [Read more...] about The Walking Dead’s Glen Mazzara On Managing the Undead Way

An artificial intelligence scholar urges technologists to embrace humility
I’m happy to report my mother continues to persevere, but her resilience hasn’t been the only silver lining to this ordeal. Years spent in the company of nurses and doctors—unfailingly committed, but perpetually overworked and often sleep deprived—convinced me that the power of AI could radically elevate the way care is delivered. Intelligent sensors could keep tireless watch over patients, automate time-consuming tasks like charting and transcription, and identify lapses in safety protocols as they happen. After all, if AI can safely guide cars along freeways at 70 miles per hour, I wondered, why can’t it help caregivers keep up with the chaos of the healthcare environment? … [Read more...] about An artificial intelligence scholar urges technologists to embrace humility
Take A Look Inside The Headquarters Of Vice
“In many positive ways, it still feels like the same place it was when I joined,” says Hunter. “The energy and DIY mentality–there’s still no one in this company who won’t get their hands dirty, from Shane on down, to contribute and execute an idea. It’s very much a company of doers and always has been. We have titles and tasks, but that doesn’t mean you won’t work the door at an event at some point. Our production facilities, for example–when we started it was just an iMac and one guy. Now that guy [Vice Media’s director of photography Jake Burghart] is nominated for an Emmy.” … [Read more...] about Take A Look Inside The Headquarters Of Vice
New York Gov. Cuomo: Empty offices should become housing
Launching a similar program today would require coordination between the city and the state, each of which has control over certain elements of zoning in Manhattan. They would have to go through the complicated process of rezoning to allow offices in certain areas to be converted, and then count on the owners of the office buildings to make the investment in turning them into housing. Though the Lower Manhattan example shows this is possible, the 25,000 residential units that eventually emerged from former offices there were developed only gradually over the course of two decades. … [Read more...] about New York Gov. Ring’s new end-to-end encryption is a big step toward better privacy
While Ring’s addition of end-to-end encryption on some of its devices doesn’t negate the EFF’s criticisms–after all, users can still share their video with police if they choose–it does show that Ring is willing to revise its privacy and security features to make its products more appealing to those who rightfully worry about privacy. When any company is willing to give up a little control over data and leave it firmly in the hands of users, it’s a step in the right direction. … [Read more...] about Ring’s new end-to-end encryption is a big step toward better privacy
