Global challenges for 2022

January 9, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Nam Jeong-ho The author is a columnist of the JoongAng Ilbo. A 21st century event as powerful as the inventions of letters, the wheel or steam engine — or as devastating as a world war — could be the breaking out of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Its spread transformed the centuries-old practice of reporting to work into working from home. The international order is not free from the cataclysmic shift. As we move into the third year of the pandemic, let’s take a look at global challenges ahead. Most noticeable is the retreat of globalization and the shutting down of borders, which wreaked havoc on international exchanges and multinational enterprises. Globalization on the political, economic and cultural fronts suddenly came to a halt. The biggest victim of the pandemic was the tourism industry, which saw the number of global tourists drop to 381 million in 2020 from 1.46 billion in 2019. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimates the resulting losses … [Read more...] about Global challenges for 2022

April 1, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Representative photo MamaEarth has received an award in the Young Turks Startup of the year category at CNBC-TV18's India Business Leader Award 2022. Founded in 2016 by husband-wife duo Varun and Ghazal Alagh, Mamaearth has emerged as one of the hottest new-age consumer brands in India, riding the direct-to-consumer wave, where brands sell their wares directly to consumers through their own websites, apps or via e-commerce channels. Mamaearth became the first unicorn of 2022 when its parent Honasa Consumer raised $52 million on January 1 in a round led by Sequoia, at a valuation of $1.2 billion. The company offers more than 80 “toxin-free, natural products”, including bamboo-based baby wipes, face masks, lotions, and hair-care products. Mamaearth also launched a second brand, Derma Co, late in 2019. Its products have hit an annual revenue run rate of over Rs 500 crore, something few new-age consumer brands have managed to do. 8 Things I Learned From The 2022 Berkshire Hathaway Meeting

April 30, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Today Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger held court at the 2022 Berkshire Hathaway BRK.B BRK.A shareholder meeting. I’ve attended the event twice in Omaha. This year I watched on my iPad from a Starbucks SBUX in Ocean City, Maryland. Watching it live in Omaha is better. Yet as always, Buffett and Munger imparted their wisdom as only they can. Here are seven things I learned. 1. Berkshire Earnings Declined 53%, But Not Really The headline number for Q1 2022 was a decline of earnings from $11.71 billion last year to $5.46 billion this year. Dig a bit deeper into the numbers, however, and you realize why Warren Buffett has criticized an accounting rule that requires Berkshire to report unrealized investment gains and losses on its statement of operations. Berkshire’s operating earnings increased year over year. In Q1 2021 the company’s operations earned $7.018 billion (after tax). In the first three … [Read more...] about 8 Things I Learned From The 2022 Berkshire Hathaway Meeting

Student Loan Debt Statistics In 2022: A Record $1.7 Trillion

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Student loan debt in 2022 is now more than $1.7 trillion. The latest student loan debt statistics for 2022 show that there are 45 million borrowers who collectively owe approximately $1.7 trillion in student loan debt. Student loan debt is now the second-highest consumer debt category — second only to mortgage debt and higher than debt for both credit cards and auto loans. The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted student loans. In March 2020, Congress responded with historic student loan relief, including pausing federal student loan payments. Both President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden extended the student loan payment pause multiple times. Biden paused federal student loan payments through August 31, 2022. Student loan cancellation has become the hot topic with student loans. For years, progressives in Congress have lobbied Biden to cancel up to $50,000 of student loans. The president has called on … [Read more...] about Student Loan Debt Statistics In 2022: A Record $1.7 Trillion

Tourism officials aiming for 80 million domestic trips in first half of 2022

May 17, 2022 by thethaiger.com

With Covid infections going down, the hopes of tourism officials are going up, according to a Bangkok Post report. Thapanee Kiatphaibool from the Tourism Authority of Thailand is feeling optimistic about domestic travel this year. She says the TAT expects around 80 million domestic trips to be undertaken in the first half of 2022. “The TAT aims to tally 40 – 50 million domestic trips in the second quarter, which will help secure 80 million trips in the first 6 months and keep the goal for the whole year of 160 million trips in sight.” Data from the Tourism and Sports Ministry shows that domestic tourists undertook 28.8 million trips in the first quarter of this year. This figure is down 67.5% compared to the same period last year, causing tourism revenue to drop 63.8% to 144 billion baht. However, despite Omicron still raging across the country in April, domestic travellers still made 20 million trips last month. Thapanee says that as the Covid-19 situation improves, people … [Read more...] about Tourism officials aiming for 80 million domestic trips in first half of 2022

May 17, 2022 by thethaiger.com

PTT Oil and Retail Business (OR) plans to increase its electric vehicle (EV) business by adding more charging stations in the nation’s shopping malls by the end of the year. Terminal 21, Fashion Island, and The Promenade are next in line to get the charging stations under the PluZ brand. Five more stations, two in Bangkok, two in Pattaya and another in Nakohn Ratchasima will be in service in Q3. The goal is to have 450 charging stations by the end of 2022, and 7,000 by 2030. The budget has not been revealed, but it is part of OR’s overall capital spending plan costing nearly 75 billion baht over the next five years. Part of the money is funded through the company’s initial public offering. Having charging stations in shopping malls will make it more convenient for EV car-owning consumers to enjoy stress-free trips to the mall without fear of getting a flat battery. Owners of EVs can manage reservations via the “PTT Station PluZ” mobile application which can manage congestion at … [Read more...] about 450 charging stations for electric vehicles by the end of 2022
