In Bwiti traditions, iboga is used in initiation rites, and is thought to allow those who take it to meet with deceased ancestors and diagnose illness. When administered safely, ibogaine can have profound, life-altering effects. While people living in North America may not be as familiar with ibogaine as they are with other psychedelic drugs, those that do know about this powerful alkaloid tend to consider its … [Read more...] about Ibogaine: Busting Myths With Beond’s Dr. Felipe Malacara

When Will We Get Serious About Obesity?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The numbers are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two out of every five adult Americans are obese. The CDC defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of>30. To put this into perspective, a 5’9” male weighing 203 pounds or a 5’6” woman weighing 186 pounds has a BMI in excess of 30. Forty percent of us exceed this threshold. Unfortunately, this is an under-appreciated health crisis. Obesity drives blood pressure higher and impacts atherosclerosis resulting in heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes, which itself can cause kidney disease, amputations and blindness. Thanks to obesity, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in states like West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana is now an astounding 15%. If these metabolic effects … [Read more...] about When Will We Get Serious About Obesity?

Brazil supreme court sides with Netflix over gay Jesus comedy
BRASÍLIA, Brazil — Brazil’s highest court on Thursday rejected a lower court’s decision to remove from Netflix a comedy depicting Jesus Christ in a gay relationship. The head of the Supreme Federal Court, Judge Antonio Dias Toffoli, sided with the streaming platform’s appeal against a temporary injunction banning the movie. It denied the idea that the movie was insulting to Christians. “One cannot suppose that a humorous satire has the ability to weaken the values of the Christian faith, whose existence is traced back more than two thousand years, and which is the belief of the majority of Brazlian citizens,” the judge said.
