Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In the late hours Sunday into early Monday morning, the full moon will slip into Earth’s shadow, creating a total lunar eclipse that will tinge the night sky satellite with a reddish hue — this is what gives the phenomenon the nickname “blood moon.” But this time scientists suspect that the celestial event will produce a moon that looks more deep red than normal, thanks to a powerful event that happened not too long ago here on Earth. MORE FROM FORBES Exactly When To See This Weekend's Stunning 'Blood Moon' Total Lunar Eclipse From Every U.S. State By Jamie Carter In January, an underwater volcano erupted in the South Pacific near the uninhabited island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha‘apai . The plume from the eruption was catapulted high into the atmosphere, reaching up to 36 miles in altitude. According to NASA, it’s likely the highest plume captured in the satellite era. “The intensity of this … [Read more...] about The ‘Blood Moon’ Total Lunar Eclipse Could Be Bloodier Than Normal

NASA-Funded Sounding Rockets To Probe Nearby Stars’ Habitable Zones
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sounding rocket technology based on captured World War II-era, German V-2 missiles is not only still relevant 75 years later but is now on the cutting edge of astrobiology and exoplanetary exploration. A NASA-funded team lead by the University of Colorado in Boulder (U.C. Boulder) will this summer launch another two sounding rockets equipped with half-meter optical telescopes to determine whether our nearest stellar neighbors have inner solar systems that could support life. The U.C. Boulder teams are specifically targeting nearby stars Alpha Centauri A & B, in hopes of characterizing their stellar ultraviolet environment to determine if such stars’ hypothetical habitable zones could be suitable for life. The aim is an ongoing sounding rocket campaign to determine if spectral type F, G and K stars —- the ones most like our own Sun —- would be so active even in full maturity that they would strip any planets they … [Read more...] about NASA-Funded Sounding Rockets To Probe Nearby Stars’ Habitable Zones
This Is Exactly What This Weekend’s Total Lunar Eclipse ‘Blood Moon’ Will Look Like Says NASA
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We’re in for a dark, brooding and distinctly orangey “Blood Moon” tonight! On the evening of Sunday, May 15 and into the early hours of Monday, May 16, 2022 our natural satellite in space will pass through Earth’s shadow. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth gets precisely between the Sun and a full Moon, preventing direct sunlight from shining on to the lunar surface. The only light that gets through to the Moon is first filtered by Earth’s atmosphere. In effect all of Earth’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the lunar surface at once. For a whopping 1 hour 24 minutes the Moon will be draped in the same reddish, orangey light that you can see just before sunset here on Earth. Total lunar eclipses are spectacular events to behold with the naked eye—or through binoculars or a telescope—but they’re not all the same. They all look different because they all pass through Earth’s shadow in space in … [Read more...] about This Is Exactly What This Weekend’s Total Lunar Eclipse ‘Blood Moon’ Will Look Like Says NASA

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Did you see the “Blood Moon” total lunar eclipse? Late on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday a spectacular reddish color was visible on the lunar surface and the full “Flower Moon” drifted through the Earth’s massive shadow in space. If left onlookers asking the same question— when is the next eclipse ? It was seen across the U.S. with those in the eastern half able to follow every phase of the eclipse while those in the western half had the joy of seeing a totally eclipsed Moon during the “prime time” hours of the early evening. This total lunar eclipse was also a “supermoon” and appeared about 7% larger than the average full Moon, but that’s not what was spectacular about it. During the eclipse the Moon traveled through the southern half of the Earth’s shadow. Consequently the Moon’s northern limb—which will be closest to the center of Earth’s shadow—became rather dark during totality. … [Read more...] about In Photos: A Deep, Dark And Jaw-Dropping ‘Blood Moon’ Wows The World For 84 Magical Minutes
