Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Visitors to “Michael Richards: Are You Down?” at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh experience two exhibitions in one. All the objects remain the same. Their meaning, however, totally different. The first exhibition is seen through the perspective of knowing how the artist died. The second exhibition is seen through putting aside that knowledge–if possible–and considering the work as the artist intend. Richards (1963–2001), of course, could never have anticipated the circumstances of his death and how chillingly resonate it would be to his artwork. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Richards was working in his Lower Manhattan Cultural Council World Views studio on the 92nd floor of World Trade Center, Tower One . He often worked overnight , as he had on the 10 th into the morning on the 11 th . He would perish there along with thousands of others, not yet 40-years-old. Inside A High-Stakes March Madness Calcutta
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Professional gamblers wager millions on the NCAA Tournament using an auction-style format that brings out casual hoop dreamers and sophisticated quants. With brackets busted, it still pays to play the game within the game. N eal, a 36-year-old insurance broker who lives in Ohio with his wife and two children, is the proud owner of the University of Texas, University of Connecticut, Tennessee, Creighton and Florida Atlantic men’s basketball teams. His wife doesn’t know about his ownership stakes, but hopefully by the end of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament his $19,000 investment will turn into $50,000. And then, he’ll let her know. “Right now, we’re on a heater,” he says of the March Madness run his teams are on. “We’re still in the red on paper, but I hope that will change quickly with a few wins.” Neal doesn’t technically own any team, of course, but the amateur sports gambler “bought” these college … [Read more...] about Inside A High-Stakes March Madness Calcutta
Liverpool Need Fresh Faces In The Summer — A Defender Should Be Top Priority
As Liverpool exited the Champions League with a whimper against Real Madrid, many fans are genuinely concerned about their side’s chances of qualifying for next season’s competition. Inconsistency in the Premier League, coupled with a series of long-term injuries across a variety of positions exposed the fragility in the Reds’ depth, and while momentarily masked with the 7-0 thrashing of rivals Manchester United, in all honesty, the two legs against Madrid were nothing short of hopeless. Despite a fast start in which Jurgen Klopp’s side rolled back the years, cruising into a 2-0 lead, there was a sheer gulf in class between Liverpool and Madrid, something that was far more apparent than when they met in last season’s final only last May. The 14-time champions never panicked and essentially killed the tie in the first leg, making the formality of a 1-0 win on their own patch all the more frustrating for the Reds, as Los Blancos barely got out of second gear. A … [Read more...] about Liverpool Need Fresh Faces In The Summer — A Defender Should Be Top Priority
AI-Generated Images Of Donald Trump Getting Arrested Foreshadow A Flood Of Memes, Fake News
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Former President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social Saturday that he was due to be arrested in Manhattan on Tuesday, and urged his supporters to “protest.” Trump’s prediction didn’t pan out, but a flood of AI-generated images fulfilled his prophecy, going viral as an ironic joke, and misinterpreted by many as sincere. The most popular images are hilariously dramatic, showing Trump tackled by law enforcement, winded during a struggle; my personal favorite shows Trump running away from his captors. Of course, the image is clearly fake, because Trump doesn’t seem the sprinting type (the former president famously believes the human body contains a finite amount of energy, like a battery, and thinks that working out erodes that energy). Chronically online Twitter users and AI hobbyists likely recognized the images as fake at first glance, but others did not (anecdotally, many of my family members, young … [Read more...] about AI-Generated Images Of Donald Trump Getting Arrested Foreshadow A Flood Of Memes, Fake News
Baseball’s Most Valuable Teams 2023: Price Tags Are Up 12% Despite Regional TV Woes
Last season’s record revenue for Major League Baseball translates into all-time-high valuations for its teams. By Mike Ozanian and Justin Teitelbaum T he eroding economics of regional sports networks made little difference: Major League Baseball teams are still hot assets. Before Arte Moreno pulled the plug on selling his Los Angeles Angels in January, he would have gotten at least $2.7 billion, or $280 million more than the MLB record $2.42 billion that Steve Cohen paid for the New York Mets in 2020, according to people familiar with the sale process. The average MLB team value is up 12% this year, to $2.32 billion. During the 2022 season, revenue (net of stadium debt service) increased 7.8%, to an all-time high of $10.3 billion. The top-line gain was driven by a 64% increase in ticket revenue (including postseason and spring training), to $2.4 billion (the 2021 season started with nearly all ballparks under capacity restrictions) and a 35% increase in … [Read more...] about Baseball’s Most Valuable Teams 2023: Price Tags Are Up 12% Despite Regional TV Woes
India Banned TikTok In 2020. TikTok Still Has Access To Years Of Indians’ Data
India’s 150 million users were forced to stop using the Chinese-owned app in 2020. But an internal tool reviewed by Forbes showed that ByteDance and TikTok employees can still mine some of their most sensitive data. One employee called it “NSA-To-Go.” By Alexandra S. Levine , Forbes Staff A lmost three years after TikTok’s largest market, India, banned the Chinese-owned social media app over geopolitical tensions, troves of personal data of Indian citizens who once used TikTok remain widely accessible to employees at the company and its Beijing-based parent, ByteDance, Forbes has learned. The revelation comes as President Joe Biden’s administration threatens to ban the platform used by more than 100 million Americans if TikTok’s Chinese owner does not sell its stake. Officials in the highest levels of the U.S. government see a blanket TikTok ban as a possible solution to the country’s national security concerns about the potential for China to surveil or … [Read more...] about India Banned TikTok In 2020. They Turned Their Dream To Create A Show-Stopping Museum Devoted To Broadway Into A Reality
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2018/2019, the last time Broadway had a full 52-week season, more than 14.77 million people attended a Broadway show. According to the Broadway League these productions have drawn more people to its theaters than all New York City sports teams combined. And yet, during its centuries of existence, Broadway never had its own dedicated museum in the heart of the theater district. That is until now. This past November the Museum of Broadway opened its doors on West 45th Street. Spread along four fun-packed floors, the 26,000 square foot space contains a plethora of costumes, original scripts, immersive exhibits and other unique artifacts. There’s everything from the original Ziegfeld Follies costumes from the early 1900s to the actual wig made from 100,000 strands of hair created by wigmaker Paul Huntley for Patti LuPone in the original 1979 Broadway production of Evita to correspondence between Rent … [Read more...] about They Turned Their Dream To Create A Show-Stopping Museum Devoted To Broadway Into A Reality

[+] after hitting his first career major league home run in the fifth inning against the Washington Nationals (Photo by Greg Fiume/Getty Images) The latest buzz among sports bankers is that the Miami Marlins can be had for $1.7 billion. Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria is an art dealer who originally became a baseball owner with a relatively small investment —$30 million—in the Montreal Expos--and was part of the controversial deal put together by then MLB commissioner Bud Selig that saw Loria swap his ownership of the Expos for the Marlins so that John Henry could unload the Marlins and purchase the Boston Red Sox. In March we valued the Marlins (and the economics of their stadium) at $675 million, 29th out of the league's 30 teams. The Marlins had attendance of only 1.75 million in 2015, 28th in MLB, … [Read more...] about Bankers Say Jeffrey Loria Floating $1.7 Billion Price For Miami Marlins
