Biden’s latest Taiwan gaffe stokes tensions with Beijing

May 24, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (May 24): President Joe Biden is seeking to show US resolve against China, yet an ill-timed gaffe on Taiwan risks undermining his bid to curb Beijing’s growing influence over the region. Whether intentional or not, Biden provoked China with a vow to defend Taiwan militarily. After saying that US policy on Taiwan “had not changed at all” during a news conference in Tokyo, he then answered “yes” when asked if the US would act “militarily” to defend the island in the event of a Chinese attack. “It’s a commitment we made,” Biden added. White House officials later walked back the remark, saying the president was only promising US aid to help Taiwan defend itself in the event of hostilities. That would be akin to what the US is doing in Ukraine, where Biden has vowed not to send troops. “The policy has not changed at all, and I stated that when I made my statement,” Biden said Tuesday when pressed by reporters to clarify the US position. The president’s … [Read more...] about Biden’s latest Taiwan gaffe stokes tensions with Beijing

She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online

May 24, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

By Rachel Metz , CNN Business Updated 1124 GMT (1924 HKT) May 24, 2022 (CNN Business) Cher Scarlett, a software engineer, has a history of being misidentified by face-scanning technology, including one instance that may have surfaced a distant ancestor in a photo. So when she was introduced to an online facial-recognition tool she hadn't heard of, she wanted to see whether it would mistake photos of her mom or daughter for her. On February 1, Scarlett uploaded some images of her teenage daughter and her mom to PimEyes , a facial-recognition website meant to be used to find pictures of yourself from around the web — ostensibly to help stamp out issues such as revenge porn and identity theft. She didn't get any images of herself in return — pictures of her daughter yielded other kids, she said, while one of her mom led to some pictures of her mother, plus images of other, similar-looking women. Anyone can use this powerful facial-recognition tool — and … [Read more...] about She thought a dark moment in her past was forgotten. Then she scanned her face online

Taking a career hiatus is now perfectly okay

May 23, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

The employment landscape has shifted dramatically in the past few years. As the Great Resignation swept across the country , the “career break” came into sharp focus. Not because it is new—people, especially women, have been taking career breaks for many different reasons for many years. No, the added attention is because the number of people taking career breaks is increasing rapidly. And, where before, employers might have shied away from hiring someone with a gap in their résumé, now they must consider every possible opportunity to fill a position. advertisement advertisement The good news is that the increased focus on career breaks creates an outstanding opportunity to remove the stigma from them. Just because someone has taken a break does not mean they are lazy or that their skills are stagnating. Indeed, many people who take a career break are working just as hard, if not harder, as before and are gaining new skills that can serve them well … [Read more...] about Taking a career hiatus is now perfectly okay

How GoFundMe’s new pages take a sensitive approach to grief

May 23, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

The gravity of grief doesn’t often translate over the fast clip of the internet. Obituaries and personal announcements of loss sit alongside the usual jetsam of a Twitter feed. advertisement advertisement In the physical world and in most digital representations, grief has a very specific visual language. It’s flowers and trees, muted colors. The UX design of grief is harder to see, and it’s not something most people think about until they’ve lost someone. But as more of our lives are lived online, more elements of decisions related to death—like estate planning, end-of-life care, and funerals—are playing out online, too. Since its launch in 2010, crowdfunding platform GoFundMe has been a source of both hope and sadness; its wide array of fundraising categories include life’s ups (like “Travel” and “Education”) and downs (like “Emergency” and “Funeral and Memorial”). advertisement advertisement Until recently, the user … [Read more...] about How GoFundMe’s new pages take a sensitive approach to grief

Korea bets tomorrow belongs to AI chip leaders

May 24, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

[JOONGANG PHOTO] AI chips are the key to future semiconductor market dominance for Korean companies, academics and others argue. Despite the country's strong position in memory chips and its growing presence in custom non-memory chips, they say that tomorrow belongs to companies that are best at designing and manufacturing high-performance processors, commonly called AI chips. "Global chip companies are going full throttle on developing AI semiconductors," said Kim Hyung-jun, head of the Post-Silicon Semiconductor Institute under the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. "AI chips will play a crucial role in chip competitiveness in future." AI chips are purposely built to perform very specific calculations as fast as possible. They are distinct from general-purpose processors, which are designed for a wider variety of functions, and are better suited for very specific, predetermined tasks that require impressive calculation capabilities and low energy consumption, such as … [Read more...] about Korea bets tomorrow belongs to AI chip leaders

May 20, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Rashad Bilal , a financial advisor, and Troy Millings , an educator, have quickly become the cultural kings of financial literacy. The dynamic duo from the Bronx is on a quest to provide access to financial knowledge that the Black community can use to effect real change. They saw a scarcity of information in the financial literacy field when it came to the Black community and began the famed podcast Earn You Leisure (EYL) in January 2019. With just an iPhone, shotgun mics, and the knowledge they held, the cultural shifters had a vision that led them to a level of popularity that piqued the interest of high-profile celebrities such as Steve Harvey, Nick Cannon, Jemele Hill, and many more. Rashad and Troy have since become the go-to resource for financial literacy in the Black community. Despite Post-Floyd Era Promises, Limited Gains In Racial Equity

May 23, 2022 by www.forbes.com

O ver the past 24 months, politicians and business leaders have invoked the name of George Floyd in calling for racial equity for Black Americans. Companies and foundations pledged billions on initiatives to recruit and promote Black talent, invest in Black-owned businesses and promote equity in everything from policymaking to policing. Despite an evolution in the dialogue and effort, there’s been little progress in outcomes for Black lives and livelihoods. Black families still have a fraction of the wealth , owning about 13 cents for every dollar held by white families. All that allyship and money hasn’t really moved the needle on the National Urban League’s equality index, which tracks how Black America is faring relative to white America on measures such as income, health outcomes, education quality, and incarceration rates. Its 2022 index stands at 73.9% – with 100% representing racial parity – which is one-tenth of a percentage point higher than the 73.8% index … [Read more...] about Despite Post-Floyd Era Promises, Limited Gains In Racial Equity

May 20, 2022 by www.forbes.com

The OKR model provides a framework that defines what we are seeking to achieve while the key results provide organizations the how by emphasizing the primary goals with specific measurable actions. 4 Ways White Supremacy Harms Humanity

May 21, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It is important to first acknowledge the words of scholar and activist Angela Davis. In her book Freedom is a Constant Struggle , Davis wrote “the call for public conversations on race and racism is also a call to develop a vocabulary that permits us to have insightful conversations. If we attempt to use historically obsolete vocabularies, our consciousness of racism will remain shallow.” For the sake of this article, the term white supremacy will be used throughout the piece because it is the term with the greatest amount of familiarity. It should, however, be noted that some have urged us to move away from the term white supremacy because it implies that the group of people that are racialized as white are “superior” to other racialized groups. Some alternatives to the term white supremacy that have been suggested include the terms white perversion and white insecurity . In the future, the term white supremacy will … [Read more...] about 4 Ways White Supremacy Harms Humanity
