Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When “quiet quitting” emerged last summer, the workforce was divided into two groups: those who stick to their job descriptions and those who don’t. Discussions about quiet quitting emerged when a viral TikTok video described the act as limiting your involvement in work that extends beyond the job you were hired to do. As awareness about quiet quitting grew, so did the backlash. What young Millennials and Gen-Zers viewed as a healthy work-life balance, older employers interpreted as a poor work ethic and sign of entitlement. Like most contentious topics trending in the media, it wasn’t long before quit quitting lost traction to something more novel. Taking its place has been the new—but equally silent trend—quiet hiring. Quiet hiring is when employers give their employees additional tasks so they can avoid the time and financial costs of hiring someone new. Although the term for quiet quitting appeared relatively … [Read more...] about The Real Problem Behind Quiet Quitting And Quiet Hiring

The Empathy Muscle—It’s A Real Thing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In its simplest form, empathy is an awareness or general sense of the emotions of other people. It is the ability to understand what others are feeling and imagine what they may be experiencing. Like any other ability we possess, we must develop and strengthen our ability to empathize through practice. But before we talk about how to strengthen our empathy muscle, let’s shatter three of the top misperceptions people have about empathy. #1: Misconception: Empathy requires you to take on the other person’s beliefs and values. Truth: Empathy is understanding why another person believes what they believe and values what they value, even if it’s different from your own. #2: Misconception: Empathy makes you weak. Truth: Empathy takes courage to acknowledge and sit with your own difficult feelings so that you can better understand and connect with those around you. #3: Misconception: … [Read more...] about The Empathy Muscle—It’s A Real Thing
The Next Few Landmines In Nonrecourse Carveouts
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Nonrecourse carveout guaranties are part of the landscape for commercial real estate loans, much as landmines are part of the landscape for recent war zones. These nonrecourse carveout landmines have often exploded dramatically in the faces of carveout guarantors. Guaranties triggered full recourse for the loan if the borrower violated one of several dozen single purpose entity covenants, ranging from the trivial to the fundamentally misguided. In the latter category, some SPE covenants required the borrower to remain solvent or limit its ordinary indebtedness to certain capped amounts—covenants the borrower would inevitably violate if it got into financial trouble. The guarantor could face personal liability for the entire loan if the property couldn’t cover its expenses. Such exposure is fundamentally inconsistent with the logic of nonrecourse financing. Many lenders have corrected their documents to prevent such … [Read more...] about The Next Few Landmines In Nonrecourse Carveouts

Al Pacino also starred in the film as a Los Angeles police detective in hot pursuit of De Niro after several plot turns and dramatic shootouts. Busting That Chinese Spy Balloon Is Harder Than You Think (Updated: ‘Well That Was Easy’)
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Pentagon has been tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon which flew over sensitive areas in Montana in recent days, apparently the latest of several such incursions. President Biden reportedly proposed that the intruder be shot down , but the Pentagon opposed this action, citing the risk of civilian casualties. In fact, bringing down this type of balloon may be extremely difficult, as it is likely to be highly resistant to the available weapons. It may look fragile, but the sheer size and construction of a stratospheric balloon makes it all but invulnerable. There is also the problem of getting to it. Such balloons ride high in the stratosphere , far above the airliners. They do this to take advantage of the change in wind direction with altitude to steer themselves to where they are needed like sailing ships, then circling above a point of interest. The U.S. military has its own stratospheric spy … [Read more...] about Busting That Chinese Spy Balloon Is Harder Than You Think (Updated: ‘Well That Was Easy’)

Why Michael Porter Jr Should Take More Interior Shots
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Michael Porter Jr has played in 55 games this year so far, which has to be considered a win in its own right considering the persistent back issues he's had dating back to his college days. The 24-year-old is one of the league's best long-range shooters, and a crucial part of Denver's offense, which is built around the playmaking of Nikola Jokić. Porter Jr is currently hitting 41.5% of his 7.1 nightly three-point attempts, his third season of hitting above 40% from the outside of his career. But while the 6'10 forward is a nightmare matchup for defenders on the outside, his inclination to take perimeter shots can make him predictable. The good news? There's justification for trying Porter Jr closer to the basket as well. Over his career, he's hit an astounding 79% of his attempts from within three feet, and is sporting an 80.3% accuracy rate this season. It stands to reason that shot should take up more than 16.5% of … [Read more...] about Why Michael Porter Jr Should Take More Interior Shots
Remember These 7 Public Speaking Basics When Presenting Overseas
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I recently traveled to Pakistan after being invited to speak about personal branding with a group of entrepreneurs and business owners in Lahore and Karachi. I’d never been to that part of the world before, and I wasn’t at all familiar with the business, professional, or cultural scene there. Delivering a workshop on the other side of the world where you’re unfamiliar with the language, culture, and local dynamics presents unique challenges for speakers whose job is to hold the attention of an audience for several hours. As someone who regularly gives talks to international audiences, I was confident I could host a valuable workshop, but acutely aware this specific assignment would be challenging due to my extremely limited knowledge of the region. My days in Pakistan were eye-opening to say the least, both personally and professionally. Presenting in a completely different region illuminated some of my blind spots, and … [Read more...] about Remember These 7 Public Speaking Basics When Presenting Overseas
What Brands Need To Know: Marketing Measurement And Attribution In 2023
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Among the advertising shifts seen in the past few years, including across social and search and display marketing, the farthest-reaching may be those due to changes in attribution and measurement. And as sustainable paid media scale has become harder to achieve in certain channels, brands must improve their ability to identify the advertising vehicles that drive contribution, not just attribution. This means they need increased visibility into the drivers of their revenue that’s not only incremental but also maintains profit margins. But this likely will happen on an aggregated basis, rather at an individual-user level. “With less visibility into attributable conversions, brands are moving away from looking at platform attribution as their true north and instead focusing on more holistic metrics like customer acquisition cost (CAC) and incrementality,” says Megan Conahan, EVP at Direct Agents , known for its digital … [Read more...] about What Brands Need To Know: Marketing Measurement And Attribution In 2023
