Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Over the past two years, educators, parents, students and other education stakeholders have had to learn new tactics, new technologies and develop new habits for leaning and teaching. Some of those new things have been disastrous . Others, meanwhile, have been unquestionably positive. As education returns to what we recall as normal, a big question remains - what, if any, of the good things will stick around? How many of the good things we learned or did during the pandemic can we make part of our new normal? Last year, for example, Epic , the world’s leading digital reading platform for kids, reported that reading skyrocketed. Between 2019 and 2020, when lockdowns and distance learning were taking hold, Epic said reading increased 89%. Maybe that’s not surprising. But it was good. It seemed unlikely, even improbable, that the pandemic reading boom would linger past a great re-opening. Yet, this week Epic … [Read more...] about Report: As Schools And Activities Opened, The Kids Kept Reading

Homemade infant formula can be dangerous. Experts share how to feed your baby through the shortage
(CNN) Misinformation about how families can get through the infant formula shortage is fueling concern among pediatricians like Dr. Tanya Altmann. The California doctor has been getting phone calls, emails and social media messages -- not just from her patients but from families all over the United States -- along with photos of empty store shelves that once held infant formula. Parents say they've been to a dozen stores and looked on a hundred websites and can't find their baby's infant formula, and they want to know what to do and whether some of the so-called alternatives they're hearing about are legit. Because I’m happy…
Community means everything when it comes to mental health and happiness. (Representational image: Phil Nguyen via Pexels) What we think will make us happy: Money, fame, more money, more fame… What makes us happy: A toddler niece calling our name. Strong Wi-Fi. Humming a song… What we think will make us happy versus what currently gives us a buzz are stored in two very separate files. Which is why the seemingly simplistic findings of one of the longest studies undertaken by Harvard – that it is relationships that delight us most of all – carries a ring of home truth. This is what ‘The Study of Adult Development’ found after its long research over 80 years: happiness lies in relationships. Close ‘When the study began, nobody cared about empathy or attachment. But the key to healthy aging is relationships, relationships, relationships,’ says George Vaillant, one of the psychiatrists who led the study during an earlier period. The repeat of the word … [Read more...] about Because I’m happy…
‘Writing nonbinary characters should become less awkward for writers’: S.B. Divya
'Machinehood' is set in 2095. (Representational image) It’s 2095. We’ve entered an age where we’ve achieved seamless integration of artificial intelligences (AIs) with human lives. It’s not only impossible but also foolish to do anything without them. AI-based bots are our personal agents. The news comes with an accuracy rating and there are pills to keep us heal quickly. The pandemic years are a reality of the past. Everything is great until Machinehood – a terrorist group that thinks they’re fighting for an equitable and dignified life for all forms of intelligences (humans, animals, and, yes, even AIs!) – strikes. They’ve given a one-week ultimatum to the human species to apply their “Machinehood Manifesto”. This unsettles the whole world. However, in particular, Machinehood has wreaked havoc in the life Welga Ramirez, whose job is to guard and protect pills manufacturers. This, in nutshell, is the believable yet fascinating world of S.B. Divya’s Machinehood … [Read more...] about ‘Writing nonbinary characters should become less awkward for writers’: S.B. Divya
Responsibilities of Responsible Investing
California's attorney general, Rob Bonta, is taking the fight to the oil and gas industry, but over plastics. His office announced an investigation and issued a subpoena to ExxonMobil over its role in the plastics crisis. Bonta said, "In California and across the globe, we are seeing the catastrophic results of the fossil fuel industry's decades-long campaign of deception. Plastic pollution is seeping into our waterways, poisoning our environment and blighting our landscapes," according to a press release from his office. He says the truth is the vast majority of plastic cannot be recycled and the recycling rate has never surpassed 9%. Every week we consume the equivalent of a credit card worth of plastic through the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe. According to the complaint, in the 1950s, 1.5 million tons of plastic were produced annually. Today, that number has skyrocketed to more than 300 million tons. Signs of market bottom elude investors after steep sell-off
- A + A NEW YORK (May 14): Investors are studying an array of indicators for clues about how much further a brutal slide in US stocks could run, with some signs suggesting the tumble in equities may not be over. The S&P 500 extended its decline to nearly 20% from January’s record peak on Thursday before an end-of-week bounce, approaching the cusp of a bear market amid concerns that persistently high inflation will prompt more aggressive US Federal Reserve (Fed) interest rate increases that could undermine the economy. Declines have been even steeper in the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite, which is down 24.5% year-to-date. Despite those losses, many widely followed indicators do not yet show the pervasive panic, supercharged volatility and outright pessimism that have emerged in past market bottoms, a potentially worrisome signal for those looking to step in and buy on the cheap after the most recent sell-off of stocks. Indeed, stocks ripped higher on Friday (May … [Read more...] about Signs of market bottom elude investors after steep sell-off
Wall Street rallies, weekly losing streak continues
- A + A NEW YORK (May 14): Wall Street surged on Friday (May 13) to end higher, closing the book on a week of wild market gyrations as relief at signs of peaking inflation vied with fears that policy tightening by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) could tilt the economy into recession. Gains were led by a rebound in megacap tech and tech-adjacent stocks, which sold off in recent sessions as benchmark Treasury yields climbed and investors worried the Fed might hike interest rates more aggressively than expected. Despite the day's gains, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posted their sixth consecutive weekly loss, the longest losing streak since fall 2012 for the S&P 500 and since spring 2011 for the Nasdaq. The Dow notched its seventh consecutive weekly dip, the blue-chip average's longest losing streak since late winter of 1980. "Is this a dead-cat bounce? Or is it a recognition by investors, as I believe, that the sell-off is overdone?" said Oliver Pursche, a senior … [Read more...] about Wall Street rallies, weekly losing streak continues
