(Photo by Susan Walsh/Pool via Reuters) - A + A SCHLOSS ELMAU (June 28): The Group of Seven (G7) economic powers have agreed to explore imposing a ban on transporting Russian oil that has been sold above a certain price, they said on Tuesday. "We invite all like-minded countries to consider joining us in our actions," the G7 leaders said in the communique. The war in Ukraine and its dramatic economic fallout, in particular soaring food and energy inflation, has dominated this year's summit of the group of rich democracies at a castle resort in the Bavarian Alps. The G7 is looking at price caps as a way to prevent Moscow profiting from its invasion of Ukraine, which has sharply raised energy prices, taking the sting out of Western … [Read more...] about G7 agrees to explore cap on Russian oil price — communique

Can India adopt a Fed-style dot plot for interest rates? Not yet, say experts
Issues ranging from differences in the nature and availability of data in India and an uncertain global and domestic economic outlook loom as hurdles in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) adopting a Federal Reserve -style “dot plot,” economists say. The dot plot is a chart that records each Fed official’s projection for the US central bank’s key short-term interest rate. The dots reflect what each thinks will be the appropriate midpoint of the Fed Funds Rate at the end of each calendar year three years into the future should the economy behave as they expect. "The dot plot is a good policy guidance to the market on what lies ahead and hence helps in minimising volatility,” Upasna Bhardwaj, Chief Economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank, said. “However, in this highly uncertain environment when sources of inflation are mostly idiosyncratic and supply-led, a Fed-like guidance of three-to-four years does not seem feasible.” The debate on whether India should adopt a dot plot-like … [Read more...] about Can India adopt a Fed-style dot plot for interest rates? G-7 leaders united behind Ukraine, aim at Kremlin oil money
By ZEKE MILLER and GEIR MOULSON ELMAU, Germany (AP) — Leaders of the world’s biggest developed economies said Tuesday they would explore far-reaching steps to cap Russia’s income from oil sales that are financing its invasion of Ukraine and struck a united stance to support Kyiv for “as long as it takes” as the war grinds on. The final statement from the Group of Seven summit in Germany underlined their intent to impose “severe and immediate economic costs” on Russia. It left out key details on how fossil fuel price caps would work in practice, setting up more discussion in the weeks ahead to “explore … the feasibility” of measures to bar imports of Russian oil above a certain level. That would hit a key Russian source of income and, in theory, help relieve the energy price spikes and inflation afflicting the global economy as a result of the war. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to our unprecedented coordination on sanctions for as long as necessary, acting in … [Read more...] about G-7 leaders united behind Ukraine, aim at Kremlin oil money

- A + A BERLIN/BRUSSELS (June 28): Leaders of the world's most advanced economies have agreed to start a Climate Club in which members agree on joint rules and standards in the fight against global warming with the hope that it will avoid spats over green tariffs. The Group of Seven (G7) nations reached a deal on the issue at a three-day summit in Bavaria, Germany that ended on Tuesday. It is a significant achievement for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has made better coordination on climate protection measures a key theme of his G7 presidency. "We note with concern that currently neither global climate ambition nor implementation is sufficient to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement," the final G7 leaders said in a statement. The Climate Club will address that by "accelerating climate action and increasing ambition, with a particular focus on the industry sector". Scholz has argued that the Climate Club would help eliminate a chaotic patchwork of national … [Read more...] about G7 launches Climate Club in attempt to avoid green trade wars
