Monkeypox Update: 2 New Cases In London, England, Unrelated To First Case
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin And then there were three. That’s three reported cases of monkeypox within a week in London. And three more than you typically see in a year in England. The first case was confirmed about a week ago, which I covered for Forbes on May 8 . And on Friday, May 13, the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed two more cases of this rare viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus. These latter two cases appear unrelated to the first case but are closely connected with each other, having come from the same household. One of them is currently hospitalized in the expert infectious disease unit at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, whereas the other is isolating at home. Obviously, the announcement of two new monkeypox cases shouldn’t be followed with words like “awesome” or “cool.” But it shouldn’t be followed with flapping your arms in a panic. The latest UKHSA announcement quoted Colin … [Read more...] about Monkeypox Update: 2 New Cases In London, England, Unrelated To First Case
Monkeypox Case Confirmed In United Kingdom, Here’s What This Rare Infection Can Do
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Monkeypox is not the type of thing that you see every day. Or even every year for that matter. It’s a very rare viral infection that can spread from person-to-person via close contact and could result in severe illness, even death. That’s why someone recently being diagnosed with monkeypox in England has prompted the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to issue an announcement on Saturday . And the UKHSA tends to reserve such announcements for significant news that the general public needs to know rather than things like, “Person has pimple, can’t go to prom.” So before you try to use, “sorry I have monkeypox,” as an excuse to get out of work or a date, keep in mind that others may then call the public health authorities to get you placed in isolation. The infected person is indeed currently under isolation and receiving treatment at the expert infectious disease unit at the Guy’s and St Thomas’ National Health Services … [Read more...] about Monkeypox Case Confirmed In United Kingdom, Here’s What This Rare Infection Can Do
G-7 Agreed on a 15% Global Minimum Corporate Tax
On Saturday, the Group of Seven (G-7) industrialized nations agreed on a 15% global minimum corporate tax as a way to prevent companies from avoiding taxes by parking profits overseas. The G-7 finance ministers meeting was held in London. Key Takeaways The G-7 group of financial leaders from seven industrialized nations agreed that a 15% global minimum corporate tax rate should be enacted. A global minimum corporate tax rate has been proposed as a way to stop a race to the bottom as companies seek to avoid paying taxes by stashing profits in countries with the lowest possible tax rates . On her way back from that meeting, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said higher interest rates would be a “plus” for the American economy. The meeting precedes an annual summit of G-7 leaders scheduled for June 11 to 13, 2021, in Cornwall, England. There will also be wider talks with 140 countries in Paris, and the Group of 20 finance ministers will be meeting in July, where … [Read more...] about G-7 Agreed on a 15% Global Minimum Corporate Tax
Stock markets struggle as fears over economy grow
- A + A LONDON (May 16): European stocks slipped on Monday and Wall Street was set for a lower open, as investor sentiment struggled to recover from last week's sell off amid fears of a slowdown in economic growth. Global shares hit their lowest point in 18 months last week, with investors worried that rising interest rates to counter high inflation will damage the global economy. Unexpectedly weak economic data kept from China kept those worries in centre stage on Monday. April retail sales plunged 11.1% on the year, almost twice the fall forecast, as full or partial Covid-19 lockdowns were imposed in dozens of cities. Industrial output dropped 2.9% when analysts had looked for a slight increase. At 1104 GMT, the MSCI world equity index, which tracks shares in 50 countries, was up around 0.1% on the day, struggling to recover from last week's lows. Europe's STOXX 600 was down 0.2%, while London's FTSE 100 was down flat. US stock index futures pointed to a … [Read more...] about Stock markets struggle as fears over economy grow
Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt
- A + A (May 16): As spiraling inflation spreads across the globe, emerging-market bonds from Turkey to Thailand are feeling the brunt. Local-currency debt from developing nations -- which is far more sensitive to a country’s domestic inflationary pressures than dollar denominated equivalents — has slumped almost 9% this year, the most since at least 2008, according to a Bloomberg index. There’s unlikely to be any relief soon as central bankers around the world attempt to control surging prices by raising interest rates even more aggressively — potentially risking growth in doing so. That certainly wasn’t the plan. Many developing economies led the charge in rate hikes last year, getting ahead of policy makers in the US and hoping to avoid a redux of the 2013 taper tantrum. But with inflation raging in the US and the strong dollar pressuring currencies elsewhere, these countries are now making a new rulebook. Policy makers across emerging nations are either … [Read more...] about Bond traders reel as inflation hits world’s emerging local debt
Oil prices fall on China’s weak economic data
FILE PHOTO: An aerial view shows an Idemitsu Kosan Co. oil facility in Ichihara, east of Tokyo, Japan November 12, 2021, in this photo taken by Kyodo. Mandatory credit Kyodo/via REUTERS LONDON — Oil prices fell on Monday as widespread lockdowns in China and weak Chinese economic data fueled fears of a global recession, though the market found some support as the European Union stepped closer to an import ban on Russian crude. Brent crude was down 72 cents, or 0.7%, at $110.83 a barrel at 1236 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slipped 58 cents, or 0.5%, to $109.91 a barrel. The fall in oil prices “is chiefly due to the weak Chinese economic data, as the lockdown measures are having a direct impact on the world’s second-largest market,” said Barbara Lambrecht, energy analyst at Commerzbank. It is estimated that 46 cities in China are under lockdowns, hitting shopping, factory output, and energy usage. The latest Chinese data showed retail sales in April shrank … [Read more...] about Oil prices fall on China’s weak economic data
UK extends police powers to combat growing crime
LONDON, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Home Secretary Priti Patel announced new measures on Monday that will increase police powers to stop and search individuals to help fight knife crime and serious violence across the country. In a letter to police forces across Britain, Patel has permanently lifted restrictions on police stop-and-search powers in areas where serious violence is anticipated. The British police recorded 6 million crimes in England and Wales in the year ending December 2021, according to a report published in April by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The figure represented an 8 percent increase compared with the year ending December 2020. Meanwhile, the number of homicides increased by 14 percent to 691 offenses. London, the capital, recorded its worst ever annual teenage homicide death toll -- 30 -- from stabbing incidents. In the two years to March 2021, over 150,000 arrests were made following stop and searches, preventing thousands of possible … [Read more...] about UK extends police powers to combat growing crime
Lending to small businesses dries up as outlook darkens
LONDON: Lending to small businesses in Britain has fallen to its lowest since at least 2014 as companies and banks worry about the worsening economic outlook, according to a survey published on Monday. Only 9% of small firms sought finance in the first three months of this year, the lowest proportion since the Federation of Small Business began asking the question eight years ago. The share of firms that saw their applications approved was also at a record low of 43%, the FSB said. "Lenders pulling up the drawbridge for small firms will threaten our already faltering economic recovery," FSB National Chair Martin McTague said. The FSB surveyed 1,211 small business owners and sole traders in March and April. Earlier this month, the Bank of England warned of a sharp economic slowdown and possibly a recession with inflation set to peak above 10% later this year.- Reuters … [Read more...] about Lending to small businesses dries up as outlook darkens
