Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin About twenty-five years ago, Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen coined the term “disruptive innovation.” I worked with Clay for many years building his consulting practice, and I can tell you that he had no idea the concept would take off as it did. Nor did he suspect that interpretations of the concept would become so mangled. It was one of his regrets that he didn’t call disruptive innovation by a more precise name that might preclude it from being stretched – in common parlance – to cover almost anything. As Clay laid it out and proved through extraordinarily detailed research, disruptive innovation occurs when a new offering caters to an overlooked customer segment through providing greater accessibility – which might come in forms such as low price, ease of learning, extreme convenience, and so on. Incumbents usually neglect these offerings because they aren’t as financially appealing (at first!) as … [Read more...] about Three Disciplines For Achieving Disruptive Innovation Through Costovation

Georgia Shows Contrasting Direction Of Federal & State Tax Burdens
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While Congress is getting ready to raise federal taxes by hundreds of billions of dollars as part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), it hasn’t gone unnoticed that lawmakers in many state capitals are doing the opposite, enacting tax relief. “Widespread tax breaks in the nation’s statehouses stands in contrast to what’s happening in Washington,” Bloomberg reported on August 9, adding that nearly “two dozen states slashed personal or corporate income-tax rates in the past two years and more than a dozen enacted temporary relief in 2022.” In addition to cutting income tax burdens, there has been a recent trend of states moving from progressive to flat personal income tax rates. Georgia was among the states where legislation was enacted in 2022 to go to a flat tax. The income tax cut signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp (R-Ga.) in April, which will move Georgia from a progressive income tax code with a top rate of 5.75% … [Read more...] about Georgia Shows Contrasting Direction Of Federal & State Tax Burdens
To attract and retain talent, work on ‘employer brand’
Small and medium businesses (SMEs) can improve employee retention and reduce recruitment costs by building an “employer brand”. SMEs with good employer branding see 20 percent revenue growth as compared to 8 percent in those with poor employer branding. An employer brand is more than just goodwill or reputation. Every business has a branding whether it is built consciously or not. The products and services, quality, news about its leaders and so on build an image in the minds of customers, suppliers, and current and future employees. What goodwill and corporate brands are to reputation and perception, employer branding is to potential job seekers. How are you perceived as an employer is what the employer branding seeks to address. SMEs face a serious challenge in finding, engaging and retaining talent. Positioning as a good employer is critical to attracting talent or SMEs will have to shell out more for even short-term talent. It is not just compensation but a company’s … [Read more...] about To attract and retain talent, work on ‘employer brand’
Department of Education Cancels Nearly $4 Billion in Student Loans
On Tuesday, August 16, the United States Department of Education issued a press release stating its intent to discharge all federal student loans that borrowers received to attend ITT Technical Institute from Jan. 1, 2005, through its closure in September 2016, amounting to $3.9 billion in full loan discharges between 208,000 borrowers. This is the second-largest targeted debt relief action the Biden-Harris Administration has taken for defrauded borrowers, second only to the $5.8 billion loan cancellation for 560,000 former attendees of Corinthian Colleges. Eligible borrowers, including those who haven't applied for a borrower defense to repayment discharge, will have their debt canceled without any further action on their part. The Education Department's decision came following findings based on internal ITT policies and records; testimonies from former students, employees, and administrators; ITT recruitment materials and brochures; recordings of ITT's representatives … [Read more...] about Department of Education Cancels Nearly $4 Billion in Student Loans
Young bankers worry about nights off early and dark days ahead
- A + A They are anxious about building careers without big deals to cut their teeth on. NEW YORK (Aug 17): On a boat under the Statue of Liberty at happy hour one August Thursday, young Morgan Stanley colleagues sipped champagne and smiled. Two Citigroup Inc banking analysts left the company's headquarters by 5.40pm to drink across the street. A young investment-banking analyst who came close to burning out last year now has enough free time to take in Broadway shows. All that was practically unthinkable a year or two ago. Back then, underwriting and advisory work was piling up and junior bankers were groaning under the strain, setting off a rebellion by Wall Street workers who could not find time to eat or shower. Underlings at Goldman Sachs Group Inc put together a presentation begging bosses to cut weekly hours to 80, and the bank was among many that ended up promising more flexibility and time off. As summer nears its end, finance-industry rookies are … [Read more...] about Young bankers worry about nights off early and dark days ahead
Marcos OKs Neda review of ‘antimarket’ BOT Law rules
The country’s chief economist expects more private sector funding for public infrastructure projects materializing soon, as President Marcos approved the plan to revisit the supposedly “antimarket” provisions of the guidelines of the Amended Build-Operation-Transfer (BOT) Law. “We have already received the President’s directive to review the implementing rules and regulations or IRR of the BOT Law. We are presently awaiting the convening of the committee to review the rules,” Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan told the 2022 economic forum organized by the Economic Journalists’ Association of the Philippines (EJAP) and San Miguel Corp. (SMC). “We have received several private sector stakeholders’ comments expressing their concerns over specific provisions of the IRR. Of course, a careful review of the rules requires that we perform a balancing act: encouraging private investment to promote job creation, technological innovation, and product competition while … [Read more...] about Marcos OKs Neda review of ‘antimarket’ BOT Law rules
Biden’s Approval Rating Surges After Series Of Unexpected Wins
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline President Joe Biden’s dismal approval rating is beginning to show signs of a turnaround after a recent stretch of accomplishments that few saw coming earlier in the summer. Key Facts FiveThirtyEight’s composite approval rating for Biden, which is a weighted average of a number of polls, rose to 40.6% on Wednesday, an increase of more than 3 percentage points from 37.5% on July 21—the lowest of his presidency so far. It’s the biggest rally in Biden's approval rating since he became president. Biden's low came just days before Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) abruptly announced he reached a deal with fellow Democrats on the Inflation Reduction Act , signing off on more than $360 billion in spending to combat climate change after he held up earlier versions of the bill for a year while negotiating the price of the legislation down. The past few weeks have also been marked by positive economic … [Read more...] about Biden’s Approval Rating Surges After Series Of Unexpected Wins
China’s Tencent reports first revenue drop as gaming regulations and Covid-19 bite
- A + A HONG KONG (Aug 17): China's Tencent Holdings suffered its first ever quarterly sales fall on Wednesday (Aug 17), hurt by a government clampdown on game approvals and playing time as well as Covid-19 lockdowns and a weakening economy that squeezed ad sales. The contraction marks a nadir for the gaming giant and owner of the WeChat messaging platform which has reported double-digit growth almost every quarter since it went public in 2004, as Beijing's crackdown on big tech companies that began in late 2020 puts the brakes on its expansion. Tencent plans to sell all or a bulk of its US$24 billion stake in food delivery firm Meituan to placate domestic regulators, Reuters reported on Tuesday. The company said on Wednesday revenue declined 3% to 134 billion yuan (US$19.78 billion) for the three months ended June 30 from 138.3 billion yuan a year earlier. It has fallen for two straight quarters and analysts were anticipating the decline. "During the second … [Read more...] about China’s Tencent reports first revenue drop as gaming regulations and Covid-19 bite
State Fairs Hope To Put Disease And Deficits Behind Them In Their First Full-Throttle Season Since Covid
C orn dogs will fry. Pigs will parade. Butter cows will greet visitors from their climate-controlled enclosures. This month is go-time for Ferris wheels, bacon-wrapped beef on a stick and llamas dressed in costumes . For the first time since the pandemic laid waste to the business, state fairs across the U.S. will swing open their gates hoping disease and deficits are behind them. The big question is whether they can overcome higher prices, vendor worker shortages and lingering fear of Covid-19 to regain or surpass their pre-pandemic form. “This whole year, everything about it has felt normal in a new world,” said Jerry Hammer, CEO of the Minnesota State Fair, second only to Texas in size and host to the llama costume contest, which also includes alpacas. “We’re in a much different place than we were three years ago. People are excited about the fair this year. The issues we have are typical, where they haven’t been for the last two years.” State fairs seem like … [Read more...] about State Fairs Hope To Put Disease And Deficits Behind Them In Their First Full-Throttle Season Since Covid
Aviation Hits New Low, Ranks As 4th-Leading U.S. Export In 2022
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For the first time in seven years, the leading U.S. export is not the broad aviation category that includes jets made by Boeing BA . In fact, even though U.S. exports are up from the record pace of 2021 by more than $100 billion, the main aviation category has fallen to a No. 4 rank for the first time in at least two decades. This is the first in a series of columns about the nation’s top 10 exports. It follows similar series I did for the countries that are the nation’s top 10 trade partners and one for the airports, seaports and border crossings that are the nation’s top 10 “ports.” Last year, the value of refined petroleum exports topped the civilian aircraft category for the first time since 2012 and only the third time in at least two decades. But the aviation category — there are also other, smaller aviation-related categories related to, for example, engines and avionics — still finished second. … [Read more...] about Aviation Hits New Low, Ranks As 4th-Leading U.S. Export In 2022
