Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Festival Fires the Starter’s Pistol on the Annual Film Awards Race The Sundance Film Festival has been hosting the best in independent film since its inception in 1981. Named for his character in the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid , the event was founded by Robert Redford in 1981. Nestled in the snowy hills of Park City, Utah, the festival has gone from being a scrappy little upstart to one of the most revered cinematic launching pads in the world. If the Oscars are the checkered flag for the awards races, then Sundance is the official starter’s pistol that kicks off the grueling 14-month competition. Most of the films featured at the festival will resurface throughout the year as they find theatrical distribution or a streaming home with Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, MUBI and the like. Brandon Cronenberg’s newest film, Infinity Pool , used Sundance as a premiere of sorts. It can already be found in theaters … [Read more...] about A Winter Wonderland For Cinema: A Sundance Film Festival Recap Part 1

Sania Mirza: A trailblazer like none other

January 28, 2023 by www.moneycontrol.com

Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title in 2005. In 2009, she became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam - playing mixed doubles in the Australian Open with Mahesh Bhupathi that year. (Image source: Instagram/mirzasaniar) Luisa Stefani had been waiting near the net as Sania Mirza returned Rafael Matos’ shot from the baseline. Her smash was too close for Rohan Bopanna to return. This course of action would have been routine – but for the fact that it brought the curtains on one of the most illustrious careers in Indian tennis. Sania Mirza will no longer play in Grand Slams . The world knew that before the Australian Open began, but as one opposition fell after another – Jaimee Fourlis and Luke Saville, then Makoto Ninomiya and Ariel Behar, then Jelena Ostapenko and David Vega Hernandez, then Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski – the expectations soared back home. The nation that often cares for little beyond cricket woke up to catch her … [Read more...] about Sania Mirza: A trailblazer like none other

How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market

August 8, 2018 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Day 3: Get to know the job market. This post is part of Forbes’ Career Challenge: Get Job-Search Ready In 15 Days . In 1987, Sallie Krawcheck secured a coveted job in investment banking on Wall Street. Shortly after she started, the 1987 crash followed. She found herself in a job she hated, in a cut-throat work culture she hated and in a time of crisis that exacerbated the problem. “I knew I didn't like investment banking. I didn't get it. I didn't enjoy it. I didn't love the work,” she said in an interview with Business Insider. In 1990, realizing this wasn’t the career she wanted, she started at Columbia Business School. Her goal in business school was to get out of financial services and switch to the media industry. According to plan, she landed a summer internship at Time, Inc. She was thrilled and excited at the prospect of working there full-time once the internship converted into a job. At the end of the … [Read more...] about How To Navigate The Flawed Job Market
