Joe Theismann ‘turned away’ after seeing Redskins QB Alex Smith hurt
Get Patriots game stats and the inside scoop on the season with The Boston Globe's Point After newsletter delivered for free to your inbox. LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Alex Smith seemed to know immediately this was bad. Really, really bad. He covered his face with both hands, then a white towel, before his fractured right leg was placed in an air cast and he was carted off the field. One of his predecessors as quarterback of the Washington Redskins, Joe Theismann, was at Sunday’s game and sensed the same — all-too-familiar with what a season-ending broken leg looks and feels like. Exactly 33 years to the day after Theismann’s gruesome injury during a nationally televised game, Smith went down with breaks to his right fibula and tibia midway through the third quarter of Washington’s 23-21 loss to the visiting Houston Texans on Sunday and was replaced at QB by backup Colt McCoy. Redskins coach Jay Gruden said Smith would have surgery “right … [Read more...] about Joe Theismann ‘turned away’ after seeing Redskins QB Alex Smith hurt
Redskins QB Alex Smith suffers gruesome leg injury
Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury on Sunday against the Houston Texans, and it would be a shock if his season isn't over. I won't show the injury here, because frankly, I don't want to see it again. If you are interested, it'll be extremely easy to find on Twitter. Heading into Sunday's games, Smith had led the Redskins to a 6-3 record, throwing for 10 TDs and 3 INTs, with a quarterback rating of 90.7. The Redskins' backup quarterback is Colt McCoy, an eight year veteran with a career starting record of 7-18. They don't carry a third quarterback. The Redskins lead the NFC East, with the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys trailing them (for now) by two games. With Smith out, the Redskins' chances of holding on as division champs take a big hit. The Eagles play the Redskins Week 13 in Philly, and then Week 17 in Maryland. Chief on QB’s mind wasn’t piling up cash
It says a lot about Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes that he listens to much more than money talking Mahomes turned down easy endorsement money last season, and he did it with the blessing of his agent. The decision wasn't made because of a lack of confidence in the products or services. It was because the rookie backup didn't want the publicity. Mahomes and his agent, Leigh Steinberg, talked to ESPN about how he declined local endorsements last year in deference to veteran starter Alex Smith. Steinberg said Mahomes got some of the offers that come with being a first-round draft choice, but he chose to focus instead on finding his place in the locker room while Smith was still the starter. "We talked about how the first year the goal was to integrate into the team, and the only way to do that is to pay deference to the incumbent veterans and try not to go into the situation with a high profile," Steinberg said. "We intentionally didn't do endorsements that would run in … [Read more...] about Chief on QB’s mind wasn’t piling up cash
