Chinese military helicopters fly past Pingtan island, one of mainland China’s closest point from Taiwan, in Fujian province on August 4, 2022, ahead of massive military drills off Taiwan following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the self-ruled island. AFP TAIPEI — Taiwan will hold live-fire military drills this week simulating a defense of the island against a Chinese invasion, officials said Monday, as Beijing carries out fresh exercises around its neighbor. The self-ruled, democratic island lives under the constant threat of invasion by China, which sees it as part of Chinese territory to be reclaimed one day, by force if necessary. The island’s forces will hold anti-landing exercises in the southernmost county of Pingtung on Tuesday and Thursday, the Taiwanese army said. “We will practice counter moves against simulated enemy attacks on Taiwan,” Lou Woei-jye, spokesman for the Eighth Army Corps, told AFP. They will include the deployment of hundreds of troops … [Read more...] about Taiwan to hold anti-invasion drills after China exercises

Biden ‘concerned’ as China extends military drills around Taiwan

(Photo by ALY SONG / Reuters) TAIPEI — China announced new military drills around Taiwan on Monday, eliciting concern from US President Joe Biden, a day after the scheduled end of Beijing’s largest exercises to protest last week’s visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China’s Eastern Theatre Command said it would conduct joint drills focusing on anti-submarine and sea assault operations – confirming the fears of some security analysts and diplomats that Beijing would keep pressure on Taiwan’s defenses. Taiwan’s foreign ministry condemned the move, saying China, which claims the self-ruled island as its own, was deliberately creating crises. It demanded Beijing stop its military actions and “pull back from the edge.” “In the face of military … [Read more...] about Biden ‘concerned’ as China extends military drills around Taiwan
Singapore PM warns inflation, interest rates could remain high
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong - A + A SINGAPORE (Aug 8): With inflation and interest rates set to stay high, Singapore is prepared to increase support measures to help deal with the increased cost of living, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said. “The world is not likely to return anytime soon to the low inflation levels and interest rates that we have enjoyed in recent decades,” Lee said in a televised message Monday on the eve of the country’s National Day. “I know the cost of living is at the top of everyone’s minds.” Rising living costs has always been a hot-button issue for the wealthy city-state that Lee’s political party has dominated since independence in 1965. Households are now feeling the pinch of rising costs, driven largely by the war in Ukraine. Singapore’s consumers are spending more relative to income, with an expenses-to-income ratio rising to 64% in May from 59% a year earlier, according to a DBS Bank analysis. Southern Cable proposes one-for-two bonus issue of warrants
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 8): Southern Cable Group Bhd proposes to undertake bonus issue of warrants on the basis of one warrant for every two shares, hoping to raise as much as RM117.68 million for working capital. The amount expected to be raised from the five-year warrants is based on an indicative exercise price of 29.42 sen, which represents a discount of about 20% to 36.78 sen per share, the group’s five-day volume weighted average market price up to and including July 20 this year. The bonus issue is deemed the most appropriate avenue to reward existing shareholders, while enabling the group to raise additional working capital, Southern Cable said in a stock exchange filing on Monday (Aug 8). The group, which manufactures cables and wires that are used for power distribution, communications, as well as control and instrumentation applications, has over RM800 million orders in hand, which it expects to keep it busy until 2024. Nasdaq rises over 1% as dip in yields supports megacaps
- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (Aug 8): The Nasdaq led US stock indexes higher on Monday, as a pullback in Treasury yields boosted megacap growth stocks after last week's blockbuster jobs data sparked a tech selloff on expectations of sharp rate hikes by the Federal Reserve. The focus this week will be on consumer prices data on Wednesday. The S&P 500 has bounced back 13% from its mid-June lows, but investors fear that signs of persistent inflation this week could further bolster the Fed's case for aggressive monetary policy tightening. "While it's clear the Fed needs to continue tightening policy, there are still about six weeks until the next meeting and we remind investors that economic data can change very quickly," said Robert Schein, chief investment officer at Blanke Schein Wealth Management. "The CPI data will help to confirm if the Fed's tightening efforts have been successful in starting to tame inflation or if continued Fed tightening is needed." … [Read more...] about Nasdaq rises over 1% as dip in yields supports megacaps
How to take risks at work when you feel burned out
Have you ever felt pulled in too many directions? Have you ever felt that those in your professional life were being demanding or that no matter what you did your manager wasn’t satisfied? Have you ever felt that despite your best efforts, you weren’t doing enough? Most of us have been there, and most of us at some point have been told that the solution is “better balance.” advertisement advertisement As a speaker on gender-related issues, I frequently get asked to discuss work-life balance. However, I respectfully decline this topic in favor of a more realistic and empowering approach to “time and energy optimization.” While balance is an elusive ideal at best, it also misses an essential point. Instead of imagining a scale with two sides that we’re trying to balance, we would be better off imagining a wallet with a limited number of dollars. We have a choice of where to invest those dollars—our time—and we want to invest them in the activities and … [Read more...] about How to take risks at work when you feel burned out

‘Bullet Train’ Box Office: Why $30 Million Is Decent Debut For Brad Pitt Movie
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sony reported an opening weekend estimate of $30 million for their $90 million action-comedy Bullet Train , which is right in the middle of essentially $25-$35 million pre-release guestimates. Amusingly enough, back in early 2022, while we were all watching the wave of late-2021/early-2022 biggies ( West Side Story, The Matrix Resurrections , Death on the Nile , etc.) die in theaters as all roads pointed to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Sing 2 , a new-to-you, R-rated, adult-skewing Brad Pitt actioner pulling a $30 million opening would have been a pie-in-the-sky result. That Top Gun: Maverick has been pulling James Cameron-worthy legs, and that Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s The Lost City opened with $30 million, doesn’t make this result for Bullet Train any less impressive. In terms of a Pitt vehicle without a significant co-star, it’s pretty much best-case scenario. Not counting his cameos in Deadpool … [Read more...] about ‘Bullet Train’ Box Office: Why $30 Million Is Decent Debut For Brad Pitt Movie
Building A Business With Your Spouse—Guidelines To Make It Work
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Eric Fragola is a cofounder of Labruutories LLC . The parent company to several successful retail businesses. Business and marriage are complex topics on their own. So why would anyone care to mix them? Just because something is possible, should you do it? It may have been inadvisable, but with some proper guidelines, I've found it can be quite beneficial. Not only am I happily married, but my wife and I run one of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S. with a great team, and we continue to grow each year as a company and as a couple. How To Build Your Resiliency Muscle
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Mike DePrisco is Interim President & CEO and COO of Project Management Institute (PMI) , a global association for project professionals. You won’t find it on any corporate balance sheet. It’s not tracked in any government database. It’s not even measurable by any standard economic formula or equation. I’m talking about resilience—the ability of organizations to absorb significant internal or external disruptions, recover equilibrium and continue operating effectively in an altered business environment. For something so seemingly ill-defined, resilience has been occupying the minds of corporate leaders and boards of directors lately. It's clear that operating in a dynamic and unpredictable environment is the new reality for business leaders moving forward. For this reason, it’s unsurprising that resiliency has become a key metric by which organizations should be judged for their success. In fact, my … [Read more...] about How To Build Your Resiliency Muscle
