Associated Press Published 3:47 PM EDT Apr 15, 2019 New York – A team of Associated Press journalists has won a Pulitzer Prize in international reporting for their work documenting torture, graft and starvation in Yemen’s brutal civil war. The prize was announced Monday in New York at Columbia University. Reporter Maggie Michael, photographer Nariman El-Mofty and videographer Maad al-Zikry spent a year uncovering atrocities and suffering in Yemen. In a series of stories, they told of how people in parts of Yemen were reduced to eating leaves while corrupt officials diverted international food aid. Reuters also won for international reporting for work that cost two of its staffers their liberty: shedding light on a brutal crackdown on Rohingya Muslims by security forces in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. Maryann Struman Detroit Free Press Published 3:48 PM EDT Apr 15, 2019 Aretha Franklin, Detroit's "Queen of Soul," has been honored with a special Pulitzer Prize for her decades of achievement. The Pulitzer Prizes announced the honor Monday at the 2019 Pulitzer Prizes for Arts, Drama and Music, naming Franklin a winner "for her indelible contribution to American music and culture for more than five decades." Franklin died of pancreatic cancer on Aug. 18, 2018 at her Detroit home. She was 76. Her passing was mourned worldwide, and thousands turned out for her funeral in Detroit.
