Official: Buffalo gunman had threatened high school shooting

May 15, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

By CAROLYN THOMPSON and MICHAEL BALSAMO BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The 18-year-old gunman who authorities say killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket had previously threatened a shooting at his high school and was sent for mental health treatment, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Payton Gendron had appeared on the radar of police last year after he threatened to carry out a shooting at Susquehanna High School around the time of graduation, the official said. New York State Police said troopers were called to the Conklin school on June 8, 2021, for a report that a 17-year-old student had made threatening statements. Police said the student was taken into custody under a state mental health law and taken to a hospital for an evaluation. The police statement did not give the student’s name. The law enforcement official was not authorized to speak publicly on the investigation and did so on the condition of anonymity. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say

May 15, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline An 18-year-old man accused of killing 10 people in a racially motivated shooting Saturday in Buffalo drew police attention last year after making a threatening statement at his high school, and was given a mental health evaluation at the time, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said at a Sunday press conference. Key Facts Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, New York, was arrested yesterday and charged with shooting 13 people—10 fatally—at a Tops Friendly Market store, in what FBI Special Agent Steve Belongia described as a hate crime perpetrated by a racist extremist. Gendron allegedly visited Buffalo on Friday to do reconnaissance in what was apparently the first time he had visited the city, which is 168 miles from Conklin, Gramaglia said. Gendron was not on law enforcement’s radar at the time of the shooting, but he was brought in by police for a mental health evaluation after making a … [Read more...] about Buffalo Shooting Suspect Made ‘Generalized Threat’ At School Last Year, Police Say

Specialist doctor crisis persists in rural India; no change in last five years despite rising seats in medical colleges

May 10, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

. The number of doctors at primary health centres (PHCs) in rural India has improved remarkably over the last five years, but the acute crisis of specialists in community health centres (CHCs) persists across the country, show government data. There were 26,464 doctors in rural PHCs in 2015-16. This number grew to 31,716 in 2020-21, marking a rise of 20 percent. However, during the same period, the number of specialists at CHCs in rural areas grew from 4,192 to 4,405, an improvement of just about 5 percent. The latest numbers come from the Rural Health Statistics 2020-21, which was released last week. The report highlighted that as of March 2021, there were just 4,405 specialists at rural CHCs against the requirement of 21,924. In other words, there is a shortfall of 17,519 specialists or a whopping 80 percent. Close These numbers suggest that owing to the gradual rise of medical colleges in the country there may be more MBBS doctors now available to serve … [Read more...] about Specialist doctor crisis persists in rural India; no change in last five years despite rising seats in medical colleges

In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all

May 15, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? The future of forests is on a … [Read more...] about In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all

PM Modi blames previous regimes for not encashing IT revolution, says start-ups grew exponentially post-2014

May 14, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Prime Minister Narendra Modi (File image) Targeting previous Congress governments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the Information Technology revolution could not be encashed earlier as the youth were not given encouragement, and an entire decade was wasted due to scams and policy paralysis. Because of the well thought out strategy of his government, the number of start-ups in India increased from 300-400 in 2014 to 70,000 in eight years, and now every eight or ten days a start-up turns into a unicorn by achieving valuation of more than Rs 7,000 crore, he said. Google Just Acknowledged What Many Businesses Already Feared

July 28, 2020 by www.inc.com

In a lot of ways, the announcement Monday, first reported by The Wall Street Journal , that Google would allow its employees to work remotely until next July isn't all that surprising. Other companies, Twitter , in particular, have gone further to say that its employees could work from home forever if they want. Except, this is a little different. See, as far as it seems, Google plans to bring its employees back to the office. The company had previously said that employees should expect to be back at the Googleplex by January 2021. That's the same timeline as Amazon's. Apple hasn't said for sure, but indicated it wouldn't be before the end of the year. Microsoft, on the other hand, has said it would return employees to the office in October. Now Google has extended that another six months, acknowledging what many people fear: The global pandemic isn't going away anytime soon--and neither is working from home. The Wall Street Journal's report … [Read more...] about Google Just Acknowledged What Many Businesses Already Feared

Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. These Strategies Can Help

December 18, 2018 by www.inc.com

In my line of business, which involves the sale of drug testing kits, I run into many a sad story about how addiction has ruined lives and caused an immense amount of grief among people who get hooked on any number of substances, especially opioids . And while you may think I am talking about people who were born into poverty and were down on their luck and looking for an escape (and I've heard those stories, too), I'm not. I'm talking about people who have lived privileged lives, earned college degrees, started successful practices and followed their entrepreneurial dream. David J. Linden, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says there is some evidence that the traits that make a good entrepreneur also make one susceptible to addiction. It can also be a rather lonely road entrepreneurs walk as they get their businesses off the ground and that, coupled with a constant fear of failure hanging over their heads, may also lead to … [Read more...] about Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction.
