The Teen Idols Take Their Leave “With social media, everything is fickle. People come and go, stars burn out quickly,” says Jack Gilinsky, who became famous three years ago for his Vine sketches with childhood friend Jack Johnson. “Even though we had 4 million [Vine] followers, there are people who had that many whose name you wouldn’t know now.” That realization inspired the pair to grow their audience elsewhere while developing music careers that could outlive Vine. The gambit paid off: Today, they’ve shifted from filming six-second comedy skits to touring for their new album—and have a fan base that transcends any single social media account. … [Read more...] about The Social Mediators: 7 Young Social Stars Share Their Rules For Engagement

Karma, GoPro’s new drone—or, excuse me, as GoPro calls it, “aerial capture device”—is another example of how the company is hoping to lure new user groups. The drone market, according to several analysts who follow the company, is potentially as large as the action-camera market, and faster growing, but it is already dominated by a big player, Chinese company DJI and its flagship product, the Phantom 4. “If [GoPro’s] drone is successful, that is one quick route to doubling the size of the company,” says Dougherty & Company analyst Charles Anderson. Speculation about the GoPro drone product had been fevered for the first half of 2016, and the company’s announcement in April that it would be delayed further hammered the stock. Now, Woodman believes, GoPro has nailed it, unveiling a package that includes a four-propeller drone, a GoPro Hero5 camera, a handheld remote, and a detachable, three-axis gimbal—or stabilization … [Read more...] about Can GoPro Rise Again?
Then there’s Tesla, which, with its high-profile Model S electric luxury car and the upcoming affordable Model 3, has been at the forefront of transportation’s transformations. But the company lost nearly $600 million in the first half of 2016, and two fatal Model S accidents have raised questions about the viability of its technology. While GM is sitting on some $20 billion in cash, Tesla is deeply in debt and seems likely to need a major infusion in order to achieve even its near-term goals. Elon Musk says Tesla will make 500,000 cars in 2018, but so far this year the company has missed its production goals. “Moving from producing tens of thousands of vehicles to hundreds of thousands of vehicles is a very significant challenge,” says Mike Ableson, who heads GM’s strategy group. “The Silicon Valley culture of developing … [Read more...] about Mary Barra Is Remaking GM’s Culture—And The Company Itself
